  1. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer MercurySteam has recounted the lessons learnt from making the Konami-published action game, and promised: "the following game will be better." Speaking during a keynote talk at GDC Europe 2011, MercurySteam co-owner Enric Alvarez discussed the challenges the Spanish studio faced rebooting the much-loved franchise. "Of course, there were a lot of things with Castlevania we would have loved to have done better. But I'm convinced the following game will be better," he said. And then, later in his talk, Alvarez said: "Hopefully in our next project we'll be able to improve on all the aspects. We've taken note of things that have gone well and others that didn't. Now, we'll see what happens." Is Alvarez talking about a Castlevania sequel? In October last year Oscar Araujo, composer of the game's soundtrack, said on Spanish radio that there would be a sequel to Lords of Shadow, and that MercurySteam had already begun working on it. He said: "If you liked the first [game], hope that the second is even more spectacular." Producer Dave Cox wrote on Twitter last week that he was working on two unannounced projects. Is the Castlevania sequel one of them? Lords of Shadow launched late last year to critical and commercial acclaim. Eurogamer's Castlevania review whipped an 8/10. "So even though the wait continues for a 3D Castlevania that truly matches the elegance, complexity and spatial intelligence of the 2D games," wrote Christian Donlan, "this is a polished and enjoyable blast of musty Gothic action in its own right." Konami has singled out Castlevania's sales for praise, describing them as "solid". A month after launch Konami had shipped a million copies of the game. "Looking back, in spite of all the errors, honestly, I don't think we went wrong," Alvarez explained. "Of course, the framerate could have been better in some places, but I'm sure this game is completely playable and you can enjoy it as it is. "There were some puzzles that were a bit obtuse because they didn't have sufficient clues, but that's only in a minority of cases. "These are problems of implementation, not problems based on philosophy or because of having taken wrong decisions. Mentally, I go back and I think, if I were to start anew, I would take the same decisions and develop the same game." Alvarez pointed to Castlevania's titans – huge bosses that rekindle memories of classic PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus – as one of the game's achievements. "When we finally finished up we were tremendously proud of the result, and we even felt more admiration for the work of Team Ico with Shadow of the Colossus," he said.
  2. Pranesta, kad Gears of War 3 palaikys stereoscopic 3D "vaizdzeli" 3D Upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War 3 includes the option to play in stereoscopic 3D, Epic Games has announced. "We asked, could we do it?" executive producer Rod Fergusson told Eurogamer at a Gears of War 3 event in London. "It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn't want to be deficient in. When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time. "It's still fledgling technology. It's still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?" A handful of Xbox 360 games have launched under the "stereoscopic 3D" banner, including Crytek's Crysis 2 and Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops. But the Xbox 360 does not, currently, output in 3D to the same degree as the PlayStation 3. That is, it does not output in full, HDMI 1.4 stereoscopic 3D in the 1280x1470 twin 720p framebuffer configuration. Instead, the Xbox 360 renders using 3D techniques based on the principle of two distinct images crammed into one 720p framebuffer. This is how Gears of War 3's 3D effect works. It also forces the game to run at a lower resolution. "It's a little bit jaggier in certain areas," Fergusson said. But the difference is "not huge". "Instead of 720p you're at five something," he explained. "It was something that came in really late in our process. It wasn't something where we said, OK, we're going to design the game from the ground up for 3D. It was more of a post-process 3D, where we're like, OK, certain things need to be adjusted, but for the most part it generally works. "It's great. I love the qualities it provides, the window into a world. That's what the 3D gives you. Having that depth of character, and being able to see that separation from the reticule and the creatures in the background – it's a different experience but it's a really good one." Meanwhile, Fergusson confirmed Eurogamer's May story that revealed that full, PlayStation 3 level stereoscopic 3D is coming to the Xbox 360 – in effect a 720p image per eye. "As you look forward, in the next XDKs [Xbox Development Kit] coming out of the Xbox, it'll have more support for 3D or more higher quality for native support for 3D," Fergusson said. "We're supporting the current state of the art for Xbox. Moving forward, the Xbox will be able to take it further." Fergusson's comments here suggest full stereo 3D on Xbox 360 will not be enabled until after Gears of War 3's 20th September launch.

  5. You won't be given the choice between a gloss or a matte Xbox 360 250GB - all future Xbox 360 S consoles will be matte only. Microsoft confirmed this via the blog of Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. The switch to matte will happen "over the coming weeks". "Some of the news outlets that covered it mentioned having a choice between matte and glossy Xbox 360s this holiday," wrote Hryb. "I wanted to set the record straight and let everyone know that that is not the case." "We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish," he added. "The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don't wait much longer." Gloss Xbox 360s will still be available but as part of Limited Edition console bundles, such as those for Gears of War 3 (black/red) or Star Wars Kinect (white).

  9. Developer Ready at Dawn has re-mastered all of the cinematics from PlayStation Portable games God of War Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta in native 1080p for God of War: Collection Volume 2. "Between Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta we had over an hour of pre-rendered cinematics, and the gap in video resolution between our PSP source footage and full HD was so extreme that no matter how many custom video up-scale solutions we tried, there was just a glaring quality difference between the 1080p real-time gameplay and the video," wrote art director Nathan Phail-Liff on the EU PlayStation Blog. "It was pretty demoralizing for us to play the game in beautiful HD and hit a cinematic trigger where Kratos looked like he was rendered through a dirty sock, so we realized we would just have to bite the bullet and properly re-render all cinematics in full 1080p. "To do this we ported all of our cinematic scenes to the PS3 and, months and terabytes of data later, had every single frame re-rendered in HD through the new Collection’s engine. From there we had to up-rez all of the post production effects and re-composite every single cinematic again in HD, giving us a final result that blended seamlessly with the in-game quality." In re-mastering the two PSP games Ready at Dawn went through every single character in the game and doubled or tripled their polygon count by hand. The studio also up-rezed and re-painted every texture across both games. That's on top of implementing full stereoscopic 3D support. "The quality of the final result of the 3D on Collection II so surprised us that it actually sold myself and a number of others on the team 3D TVs in general," Phail-Liff continued. "Personally I wouldn’t want to play the games any other way after being able to experience it firsthand."
  10. Apie X360 pardavimus Duomenys The Xbox 360 was the best selling telly console in North America last month, with 277,000 sales. This time last year, Xbox 360 sold 443,500 consoles, which means this is the first year-on-year decline for Xbox 360 in North America since December 2009. Oh no! But wait - the comparison is skewed due to the summer 2010 launch of the Xbox 360 Slim model. Nevertheless, numbers for July in North America were down across the board. Microsoft bragged about leading US home console sales for over a year, and said Xbox 360 "remains on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history - an unprecedented feat in the sixth year of its lifecycle". Microsoft expects the September launch of Gears of War 3 to help Xbox 360 "maintain its lead throughout the year, ending 2011 as the number one console worldwide". Microsoft noted that, beyond shops, Kinect Fun Labs had been downloaded one million times in two months. 1000 "pointų glitčas" Glitčas A glitch in the Xbox Live Rewards programme last night awarded selected users thousands of free Microsoft Points. Eagle-eyed gamers who noticed the extra currency being added were able to raid the Xbox Marketplace for several hours with their freely obtained Points. Honest Samaritans who alerted Microsoft to the issue on Twitter, wary of spending their unearned gains, were initially told the Points were theirs to keep. "We appreciate your honesty. Enjoy your points", a message on the official XboxSupport account reads. "There was a known issue with the rewards system. The points you were rewarded are yours", says another. But Microsoft then changed its stance, with users who refrained from spending sprees reporting unspent extra Microsoft Points had been removed. "The Rewards deposit today was credited multiple times for some users. The extra points have been recalled," reads a more recent message, explaining Microsoft's new stance. Will gamers be asked to pay up for purchases made using the Points given in error? Concerned users are still waiting for an answer, with Microsoft support saying the company currently had "no info on that" to share.

    RAGE

id Software has explained why Rage, its upcoming first-person shooter, is better than Doom 3. Sci-fi horror Doom 3 divided opinion upon its 2004 release and drew criticism for perceived repetition and monsters jumping out of cupboards. Rage, due out in October, trumps it because, according to id CEO Todd Hollenshead, it's bigger, has more depth and seamlessly teaches players how it works. "Rage is a huge game," Hollenshead told Eurogamer at QuakeCon last week. "It's the deepest game we've ever made. If I was as smart as John [Carmack] I could figure out the math of why it's bigger than everything else. "I compare it to Doom 3. Doom 3 was great when it came out. I loved that game. But I think about the single-player experience for Doom 3 compared to Rage… "There are elements that are the same. You still have guns. You still have bad guys you're shooting and areas you're shooting them in. I still think Doom 3 looks good. "It doesn't look anything like Rage." Despite some not warming to Doom 3, it set tills alight. id shifted more than 3.5 million copies of the game. It remains the most successful game by the famed developer. Eurogamer's 2004 Doom 3 review of the single-player portion of the game fragged a 9/10. "It may not feel like it's taking gaming forward to any appreciable degree in terms of astounding new ideas, but when it's as all round immersive and entertaining, who cares?" wrote Kristan Reed. "The thrill of Doom III is simply that id has not only created something genuinely stand-out impressive on a technical level, but has gone on to create a beautifully unpretentious game that feels at home with itself in that it's not trying to be something it isn't." Another area Rage improves upon Doom 3, according to Hollenshead, is in how it teaches the player how it works at the beginning of the game. "I could take you over and say, sit down and play, and have complete confidence you'll know everything to do," he said. "But with Doom 3, when you boot up the game on the PC, there's no, like OK, your control is WASD. We had some very simplistic stuff, like, walk around behind a robot, in the opening level before the invasion happened, but that was our version of a tutorial. "I love the way we've done it in Rage. We teach you how to do everything that's integrated completely into the game so it's completely seamless to the player. Honestly, that's been one of my pet peeves with the company for years. "I was like, we are not teaching people how to play deathmatch in Quake 3. This is not enough."

  20. Pirmasis zingsnis link 3DS pigimo Daugiau informacijos UK online retailer GameStop.co.uk has cut the price of the Nintendo 3DS to £135. £134.97, to be exact, with free delivery. The move is ahead of Nintendo's official UK 3DS price-cut, set for this Friday. Nintendo's 3DS price cut is a bid to boost disappointing sales in time for Christmas. In Europe Nintendo does not set the price of hardware. Game, though, lists the handheld with an RRP of £230, and currently sells it for £195. GameStop's aggressive offer is sure to spark a new price war for the console this week. Will a UK shop dare to go below £100?
