Split/Second developer Black Rock official closes its doors today. Confirmation comes from Nick Baynes, the former director of the Disney-owned studio. "@blackrockster officially closes its doors today," he wrote on Twitter. "Thoughts go out to all facing their last day. A bright future awaits all though I'm sure!" In July Eurogamer broke the news of Disney's intention to shutter Black Rock. Disney blamed the decision on the cancellation of Black Rock's then in-development secret project, which Eurogamer subsequently discovered was a free-to-play DOTA-style game provisionally titled Champions Alliance. Aborted projects included a sequel to 2008 quad-bike racer Pure and a follow-up to last year's Split/Second. One anonymous source told Eurogamer that Disney handled Black Rock clumsily, outsourcing games to other companies that the Brighton studio was more than capable of producing. The source also bemoaned the lack of advertising for recommended racing games Pure and Split/Second. Nevertheless, from the ashes of Black Rock Studio have arisen new studios: Roundcube Entertainment, lead by Split/Second director Nick Baynes; ShortRound Games, formed by a quartet of previous Black Rock department directors; and BossAlien, fronted by Pure director Jason Avent.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution gets a DLC add-on called The Missing Link later this year. As reported by Siliconera, resourceful users dug up mention of the pack in the official website's RSS XML. According to the blurb found therein, the campaign expansion sees protagonist Adam Jensen attempting to escape from a mysterious freighter, only minus his augmentations. You'll have to rebuild his powers, explore "sprawling" new environments and interact with a cast of new characters. "We are very excited for Deus Ex: Human Revolution fans to be able to complete Adam's journey in the game with The Missing Link DLC," read an apparent comment from producer David Anfossi. "Gamers will be able to experience a vulnerable side of Adam like never before, which gives the overall game a whole new dimension. The Missing Link propels players into compelling gameplay, beginning with Adam being stripped of his use of augmentations, new, visually stunning environments and the continuation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's conspiracy rich story."

Batman Arkham City's Robin DLC will be available to UK gamers through pre-orders at Game and Gamestation. The extra content sees sidekick Robin playable in the Arkham City's Challenge Mode. It also adds two maps: Black Mask Hideout and Freight Train Escape. The Robin DLC pack was previously spotted as a US pre-order bonus. Across the pond it's only available through retailer Best Buy. Batman: Arkham City will feature a wide array of bolt-on content - a total of six Batman pre-order skins are set to be divvied up between various retailers. A Resident Evil alternate reality game has just gone live on the web to tie in with forthcoming squad shooter Operation Raccoon City. So far all there is is an Umbrella Sciences recruitment site that reads "Let us turn you into something incredible. Your new career starts here August 31st." Over the next few weeks, participants will be asked to help an insider find evidence to expose Umbrella and the devastation it's about to unleash in Raccoon City. Clues will appear on www.insertedevil.com with users then having to scour the web for the relevant materials. Once you've found an item, you'll get a code to prove you've done so. As it's collated, the evidence will reveal new information about gameplay and playable characters. As yet undisclosed prizes will also be up for grabs for successful sleuthing.

Portal 2 was more successful on the PC than it was on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Valve boss Gabe Newell has revealed. Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, he explained that the studio never sets out to make games to specifically appeal to PC or console gamers and is often surprised to see which version fares better. "We can never predict; I mean we just try to build good games and then we tend to be surprised," he said. "Portal 2 did better on the PC than it did on the consoles; Left 4 Dead did better on the consoles than it did on the PC." Newell didn't clarify whether he was referring to units sold or total revenue earned. "So you know we don't try to guess, because we're not sure what value there is to guessing," he continued. "We've never had a situation where we said, 'We really, really want to build something that is more popular for the console guys.' Because usually we have a bunch of other higher priority problems we want to solve. So we're glad that people want to play our games wherever they want to play."
