Eidos Montreal's firmly-under-wraps Thief 4 will feature online capabilities and run on Unreal Engine 3, according to freshly uncovered developer resumes. CVs of Thief 4 workers uncovered on networking service LinkedIn were posted on NeoGAF, and duly dissected. One resume belonged to Colas Fievet, an online programmer for the game. His duties from August 2009, to December 2010, included "networking, gameplay, debugging", plus "online and offline tools on Thief 4". Thief 4 would be the first in the series to feature any kind of online play, oh em gee. Multiple CVs referenced Thief 4 running on Unreal Engine 3, despite Eidos Montreal having favoured the Tomb Raider engine for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Nevertheless, Thief: Deadly Shadows ran on Unreal Engine 2. Other information gleaned included mention of "shops, escape gates, public zones", and that the game will include a "hub". There's a question mark over the information's relevance, however, as some CVs belong to artists who have long since left the project. Edios Montreal originally announced Thief 4 back in 2009, and cautioned that a release was still a long way off. "We're in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious project and a very exciting one," Eidos general manager Stephane D'Astous said. "It's too early for us to offer any specific game details."

The developer behind critically-mauled survival horror Amy has issued a ripost to those who haven't taken to the title. A note on the game's official Facebook page from developer VectorCell today (thanks Destructoid) suggested that if you didn't like the game you might want go back and try it on the easiest difficulty setting. "Today is the official release day of the PSN version in the US and we wanted to take this opportunity to come back to you," begun the post. "As many of you have already heard, Amy is a HARD game. Some people totally disliked that while others really enjoyed it. "We believe this is part of the survival experience we tried to build as we wanted the game to be challenging. However, we actively listen to the community and comments and hence recommend the non-hardcore gamers to launch the game in EASY mode (in the settings) for now. "This will give them a much more pleasant and smoother experience, especially as the checkpoints are scarce." Despite universally dismal reviews, the developer went on to insist that the game is actually performing rather well. "In addition, we wanted to thank those of you who bought the game and rated it on the Xbox market and the PSN Store. Indeed, Amy has been #1 in the daily XBLA charts since its launch in all major territories and players have rated it between 3 and 4 out of 5 on XBLA and more than 4 on the PSN despite the controversy. "For us, the players' ratings (almost 9500 so far) are the most important ones." Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead gave the game a thorough shoeing when it launched earlier this month. "Amy fails on all counts. It's plagued by jerky movement, poor scripting, weak puzzles and shoddy checkpointing, but it's also a characterless mess of themes and ideas swiped from a dozen better horror titles," read his scathing 2/10 Amy review. "Neither quirky enough to be forgiven its unfinished feel nor polished enough to satisfy the base gaming itch, Amy is a crushing disappointment with little to recommend it."

A major glitch in one of Mario Kart 7's tracks will remain unfixed, Nintendo has said. Mario Kart 7 players discovered an exploit that enables racers to skip almost half of the Wuhu Mountain Loop course (named Maka Wuhu in North American versions). By deliberately driving off of the track at a specific point near the course's start, gamers are sneakily returned to the track much farther on - near its final section. But fixing the bug would give an "unfair advantage" to those with unpatched copies of the game, Nintendo decided. "We are aware that it is possible to navigate a certain part of the track in Wuhu Island in a way that allows a large part of the course to be bypassed," said Nintendo spokesman Buddy Roemer in a statement to fans, posted by Sticktwiddlers. "There are no plans to update the game to remove this shortcut as doing so would create an unfair advantage for the users of the original release of the game. Rest assured your comments have been added to our records for Mario Kart 7." The track has become a favourite for online players who know the exploit, as it allows for an easy win against players unaware of the shortcut. A video of the illicit manoeuvre lies below.

Reputable news agency Bloomberg has thrown further behind weight rumours that Apple is readying iPad 3 for release this March. Sources close to Apple apparently told Bloomberg that iPad 3 will ship in March, resplendent with quad-core processor and higher screen resolution. Mass production is said to be already under way, with controversial Chinese manufacturer Foxconn running factories 24 hours a day to meet demand. Cringe. The report stated that iPad 3 will support 4G wireless standard LTE, and have "more pixels on its screen than some high-definition televisions" - enough to make images "look like printed material". The Bloomberg report backs up what we've already heard - that Apple will release iPad 3 in March and iPad 4 in October.

Max Payne creator Remedy Entertainment has praised Rockstar's upcoming take on the series, and said Max Payne 3 looks "brilliant". Remedy boss Oskari "Ozz" Hakkinen told Kotaku he was enthusiastic for the Rockstar-developed threequel, due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March. "We absolutely love what they've done and couldn't be more proud of where the series is headed," Hakkinen said. "I mean, [Rockstar] don't really make s***ty games, do they?" he continued. "It's as if the Rockstar logo has become this 'seal of quality'." Alan Wake developer Remedy sold the Max Payne rights to Rockstar's parent Take-Two in 2002. The price? $10 million plus company stock. Rockstar previously developed console ports of the original Max Payne for PS2, and Max Payne 2 for PS2 and Xbox.

Two versions of platforming classic Prince of Persia will be re-released this week, Nintendo has announced. Wii fans can download Prince of Persia's SNES incarnation from Thursday. And 3DS owners will be offered the Game Boy Color version on the same day. The Prince's Game Boy Color appearance was back in 1999. This week on 3DS the game will cost £4.50/€5. The Wii Virtual Console version, however, is superior. A port of the extended SNES Prince of Persia, this contains almost double the number of levels as well as various other enhancements. It's also slightly more expensive at 800 Wii Points (about £5.60). Two other DSiWare games will be available this week: 40-in-1 Explosive Megamix (800 DSiWare Points - about £7.20) and strategic action title Come On! Heroes (200 Points - about £1.80).

Dead Island expands on 1st February with new story content that lets you play as Ryder White, the main game's chief antagonist. For 800 Microsoft Points or £7.99 on PSN and Steam, you'll see first-hand the motivations of White - a military man and "loving" husband. This new story content has twists and turns and should last "several" hours. There are two new blueprints and weapons to collect.

Origin will be required to run all editions of Mass Effect 3 on PC, BioWare has revealed - including copies bought from shops. Mass Effect 3 won't be available on Steam. "During initial release, Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other third-party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time," wrote community man Chris Priestly on the BioWare forum. "Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers." It's a similar line to the one EA used when defending the removal of Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2 from Steam. Mass Effect 3 on PC will require one-time online authentication before the single-player game can be played. Multiplayer Mass Effect 3 will obviously require a constant internet connection. There will be no limit to Mass Effect 3 game installations. Priestly stressed that Origin is not spyware and will not gather information against your will. "Origin is not spyware," he wrote, "and does not use or install spyware on user's machines. "In order to allow Origin to install games and their patches for everyone to use, Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the file names in the Program data/Origin folder. This is an ordinary Windows function, not an information-gathering process. "

Eurogamer demo analizė Few cross-platform games of recent times have disappointed as much as Square-Enix's Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy 13 which underwhelmed with sub-HD visuals, awful video quality and an inconsistent performance level. We expected better from the publisher and it looks as though the new sequel - just weeks away from release - is set to address a bulk of these issues. We first saw Final Fantasy 13-2 on the showfloor at last year's Eurogamer Expo. The two versions of the game on display during the event looked very, very close, and last week's PSN/Xbox Live demo release gave us our first opportunity to analyse the new game in greater depth and to see if our initial impressions stood up to a more rigorous tech analysis. There are few surprises with the PlayStation 3 version of the demo. From a technical perspective, FF13-2 picks up right where its predecessor left off: the game still renders at a native 720p resolution with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing (MSAA) applied, with a distinct aesthetic that's as much about the impressive post-processing effects work as it is about the undeniable quality of the core art assets. Final Fantasy 13-2 may look soft in places, but the lighting, blending and blurring create an impressive, easy-on-the-eye experience that dazzles with a battery of beautiful lighting effects - an extension of the style we saw deployed in the game's predecessor. Indeed, there's very much a sense that from a technological point of view, the core engine hasn't been tweaked much at all on PlayStation 3, just that the developers are more confident with in how to make use of its capabilities. However, some of the things we would have liked to have seen fixed - such as the interlace-style 'alpha to coverage' effect on the hair of the main characters haven't been addressed. Clearly the tech team at Square-Enix had bigger issues on its mind, such as improving the lacklustre nature of the Xbox 360 engine port. Based on what we've seen in the demo release, 360 owners can take encouragement from the fact that the long list of visual issues we had with the last game appears to have been comprehensively addressed with this sequel. The 1024x576 native rendering resolution from FF13 has gone, replaced with the same native 1280x720 2x MSAA set-up that PlayStation 3 owners enjoy. While the quality of the scaling in the last game was actually OK, the effect on the 'alpha to coverage' hair looked particularly dodgy, and the switch to native res addresses that, along with some of the more obvious issues with the "jaggies". Less serious graphical defects that impacted the FF13 on Xbox 360 have also been fixed. The off-set shadow bias issue - which saw shadows submerged into textures and only partially visible - has also been fixed, for example. Indeed, aside from a slight difference in colour representation, the Xbox 360 version is now a very close match for its PlayStation 3 sibling - something you can check out for yourself in this 55-shot Final Fantasy 13-2 PS3/Xbox 360 comparison gallery. But what of performance? The resolution deficiency on Xbox 360 did at least allow for the game to run more smoothly overall in the more linear 'corridor' levels (though falling apart somewhat in the more open chapters), so we were interested to see how the jump to native res with MSAA - with the inevitable need to tile the framebuffer from eDRAM to main memory - would impact frame-rate. The demo proves to be useful here, as the initial battle against the mighty hand of Atlus provides an excellent stress test for the engine. In the demo at least, basic traversal and combat seems to be very close to a locked 30 frames per second on both platforms but this selection of action - taken from the beginning of the demo - clearly presents challenges to both consoles. It's not often that we see the same scenes impacting performance simultaneously on both machines, but that's definitely what's happening here and it's clearly PlayStation 3 owners that benefit from smoother performance overall. Of course, right now we only have access to the demo code and if there's one thing we learned from the FF13 experience it's that conclusions can change on a per-level basis, so we're really looking forward to putting the final versions of the game to the test. Curiously, the final code ships on just one Xbox 360 DVD rather than the three that were required to house FF13. We're told that the Japanese version (which is already available) weighs in at 7.75GB of data overall on Xbox 360, whereas the PS3 Blu-ray version utilises around 14GB of the 25GB available on a single-layer BD. What this tells us is that FF13-2 is far less reliant on streaming video from the disc, preferring to utilise the engine itself to play out the cinematic sequences - this is a much more space-efficient way of doing things and a measure of how much more confident Square-Enix is in its engine this time around. But is the gulf in disc size just down to movie utilisation? Apparently not. We're told that the disc structure of both versions is much the same, allowing for direct comparisons. A movie folder accounts for 1.64GB of data on PS3 (down from around 32GB on FF13, which tells its own story), while the 360 equivalent is just 188MB, indicating that while video sequences are sparse on the new game, they'll almost certainly look a whole lot better on the Sony console. However, this still doesn't account for the majority of the difference in data utilisation, which is centred on level assets. Uncompressed audio could may make a difference - but we'll be reserving judgement here until we've had a chance to get an extended playtest on both versions. Final Fantasy 13-2 is due for release in North America on January 31 with the UK game arriving on February 3. We'll have full Face-Off coverage closer to release.
