Activision has sketched out its Modern Warfare 3 DLC schedule for the next nine months or so. As revealed earlier this month, the publisher is planning around 20 'drops' of content for premium Elite subscribers during 2012, created by three different developers - Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer and Raven. The first bits of new content - the Piazza and Liberation multiplayer maps - launched for Xbox 360 today. According to a chart posted on the game's official site, Elite subscribers can expect the rest of the year to pan out as follows: February: New map March: New map, two new Spec Ops missions April: Two new maps May: New map, new Spec Ops mission June: New map, new Spec Ops mission, new game mode July: Two new maps August: New map, new Spec Ops mission, new game mode September: New map, new Spec Ops mission All these add-ons will sporadically be bundled up for non Elite subscribers and sold in a more traditional fashion.

Apple has posted a record-breaking net profit of $13.06bn (around £8.36bn) for the last financial quarter. That's a very healthy increase of 110 per cent on the same period last year. It sold 37.04 million iPhones (a 128 per cent year-on-year increase) between 1st October and 31st December, putting it ahead of nearest smartphone rival Samsung, which managed 35 million over the same period. Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed it could have sold even more if supply hadn't been constrained over Christmas. 15.43 million iPads were snapped up, representing a 111 per cent jump on the same period in 2010. The iPod, however, seems to be on a down-swing, also selling a mere 15.4 million units. That's a 21 per cent year-on-year drop. Finally, Mac sales totaled 5.2 million units, climbing 26 per cent. "We are very happy to have generated over $17.5bn in cash flow from operations during the December quarter," commented CFO Peter Oppenheimer. "Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2012, we expect revenue of about $32.5bn and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $8.50." Recent reports suggest that the iPad 3 is the next cash magnet due out of Apple HQ, with a March launch expected.

Resident Evil: Revelations should have been a numbered release to promote the fact it is a "full-on" Resident Evil game and not another spin-off, its producer has admitted. In other words, Resident Evil: Revelations would have been Resident Evil 6. It would also have had that logo. "Maybe I shouldn't say this, but looking at the finished game makes me think why we didn't slap a number on the title," Revelations producer Masachika Kawata said in a new Iwata Asks interview. "It's a true-as-can-be Resident Evil game from head to toe, so please enjoy it." While praising Resident Evil 4, Kawata explained that the Revelations team wished to "remove any dissatisfaction from before". The series' last numbered release, Resident Evil 5, received a lukewarm reaction from fans and critics alike. "The first thing I thought was I wanted to make a full-on Resident Evil game rather than just port the series into a handheld system and set that as my goal," Kawata added. "Another thing was that, whereas Resident Evil 4 had changed the model for the series of the numbering titles from there on out, I wanted to get back to the origins of the series by returning the direction to its horror roots. We created a team that could create a truly frightening Resident Evil."

Microsoft has set up two new Kinect-focused development studios, judging by a set of recruitment ads. As spotted on NeoGAF, Microsoft's careers page lists an opening at something called LEAP. It wants developers who, ideally, can boast "experience with Kinect or other motion control technologies". "We're the people that developed Kinect and profoundly changed the way people interact with technology. Now our incubation team is ready to change the world again, but we need your help!" notes the blurb. Another ad on the site for an HR manager mentions Platform Next Studios, which is apparently responsible for "pioneering experiences on Kinect". There's no word on exactly what either studio is working on. Both are based in the platform holder's Redmond HQ, outside Seattle. A Eurogamer report last November suggested that a second, more powerful iteration of Microsoft's motion control tech is currently in the works.

PC users can take an early look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim's 1.4 update via a Steam beta that's just gone live, publisher Bethesda has announced. A post on the Bethesda Blog explained that anyone interested in testing it out should log in to their Steam account, click on 'Steam' in the upper menu, go to the 'Beta Participation' section in the 'Account' tab and select 'Change'. Then choose 'Skyrim Beta' and select 'OK'. Once you've tried it out you can then post feedback on the update in Bethesda's beta forum. A few words of warning from the publisher though: "This patch is still in development. Apply the update at your own risk and only if you are affected by issues listed in the fix notes," read the blog post. "Be sure to back up your saved games or simply be careful not to overwrite your existing saves. If you decide to opt out of the beta program, your old saves will still work with the current release of Skyrim (v 1.3)." Bethesda announced full details last week of exactly what you can expect from the impending update.

Mass Effect action figures due to go on sale in the US later this year will come with download codes for exclusive DLC. As spotted on NeoGAF, a retail listing on BigBadToyStore shows eight separate figures available individually ($17.99) or in packs of four ($67.99). The accompanying blurb reads: "Each figure includes an in-pack card giving you access to downloadable in-game bonus content. Each figure contains different in-game content, exclusive to North American released product. Collect all eight for the full experience!" A listing for the same items on BioWare's own store confirms the giveaway and offers a little more information: "These products contain codes that can be redeemed for a downloadable content pack for Mass Effect 3 multi-player. They are slightly randomised during the registration and could include powerful new weapons and new characters. "The pack could also include character boosters, weapon modifications, and weapon upgrades to make your multiplayer squad stronger. (Only supported on Xbox 360 and PC.)" We've contacted BioWare for additional information on exactly what is on offer and whether the content will be available to gamers in Europe.
