The Wii U will launch in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan by the end of 2012, Nintendo has promised. Following the release of its third quarter 2012 financial results, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told reporters in Japan today the Wii successor will hit key markets for the year end. Nintendo had stated Wii U, set for a re-reveal at E3 2012 in June, would launch no earlier than April 2012 but before the end of the year - but did not specify the territory in which this would happen. Now we know Nintendo will launch the console on these shores in time for Christmas. Nintendo unveiled the Wii U at E3 2011, but key features, such as specifications and launch games, remain unknown. Dev kits are in the hands of developers tasked with creating games for the system. Studios are under strict orders from Nintendo not to divulge specifications - still in flux - to press, although it is thought the Wii U will be powerful enough to produce visuals on a par with the best games on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Meanwhile, Iwata said Nintendo hopes to return to profitability next year - it expects to make a huge loss for the financial year ending 31st March 2012. The continual release of major titles for the Nintendo 3DS and "other measures" will help the Japanese company do this, Iwata said.

Microsoft's next home console will use Blu-ray discs, catching up with Sony's PlayStation 3, according to Kotaku sources. The Xbox 360 currently has a DVD drive - meaning a 9GB limit per disc, compared to Blu-ray's 50GB capacity. The site's sources also claimed that Microsoft is planning on including technology in the new machine that will somehow combat used games, though didn't provide specifics on exactly how that will work. You might like to take that one with a pinch of salt. Retailers would be up in arms if true, as might budget-minded gamers. As per tradition, Microsoft declined to comment on rumour and speculation. Kotaku's report also mentioned that the system will ship with a refined version of the Kinect peripheral - as reported by Eurogamer last November. Earlier this week, a separate report emerged claiming that Microsoft's new console is being built around a Radeon HD 6670-like GPU and will be roughly six times more powerful than the Xbox 360.

Eccentric PC indie side-scroller Terraria gets a full retail release on 16th March, publisher Merge Games has announced. Priced at £19.95, it's packaged as a Collector's Edition, including an exclusive in-game item, poster, a key-ring and trading cards. Check out all the swag in the image below. That price is considerably dearer than the original download version, which sells for £5.99 on Steam. Still, considering the quality on offer, we shouldn't begrudge developer Re-Logic a few extra pennies for its efforts. "There's a reason Terraria has sold a few hundred thousand copies in the first few months it's been on sale," read Eurogamer's 8/10 Terraria review. "It's because, if Terraria really does have a bottom, no one can be bothered to go find it. They're having far too much fun on the surface, and the spaces in between." Merge's announcement also mentioned that the game has now been downloaded over a million times since its launch last year.

An officially-licensed Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D accessory pack launches in the UK on 24th February. The Nintendo-branded box of goodies costs £24.99 and launches two weeks before the game itself, on 9th March. The pack contains a variety of bits and pieces from manufacturer Hori, Nintendo Life reports. You get a khaki green 3DS pouch, a snap-on plastic case, a new retractable stylus plus camouflage-coloured stick-on skins. It's not the ultra-rare 'snake-skin' Metal Gear Solid-themed 3DS available to a select few Japanese gamers, but it is a lot easier to get hold of.

Capcom has confirmed plans to release a free, post-launch patch that adds a tournament support mode to upcoming fighting game Street Fighter x Tekken. While Capcom is yet to finalise the details of what the mode will actually do, it is designed to alleviate fan concern over the controversial gem system - and how it will impact tournaments. The gem system forces players to pick three gems to attach to their character. They come in two types: assist gems are always active and assist you in aspects of your game. Boost gems improve character attributes when they are activated. The fighting game community has reacted strongly to the gem system, with some predicting it will grant an unfair advantage - an accusation Capcom denies. Those in the tournament scene have their own set of concerns, including how the gem system will impact hosting matches. "We know a lot of players are worried that with the gem system tournaments will be harder to run," Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono told Eurogamer. "We know they take a lot of time. A lot of players were saying, 'I have to do button checks. Do I have to do a gem check now before a match?' With regards to that we plan to release a free post-launch tournament support mode." Capcom hopes to release the tournament support mode as quickly as possible. "Hopefully it will alleviate a lot of the concerns the community has," Ono said. The idea is that fighting game fans offer their thoughts on the tournament support mode so Capcom gets an idea of what to include in it. "Hopefully from that we'll get feedback from the community, and then we'll have a better direction of exactly what we should do with this mode," Ono added. The game already includes a number of features designed to appeal to tournament players, including the ability to configure your buttons at the character select screen - long called for by fans. Meanwhile, the enthusiastic Japanese developer was keen to stress that the gem system - 57 gems will be included on the disc with others supplied as pre-order bonuses - has been misunderstood by much of the fighting game community. "In terms of DLC gems, we don't have any set plans on selling gems like this or like that," Ono said. "We're waiting to see what the user reaction is first, because we think a lot of users still don't understand the gem system completely. "They're not power-up items. That's not how we see them. We put gems into the game which are default. As long as you have these default ones you'll be fine. If you want to get more gems down the road from the pre-order bonuses, you can definitely do that, but it doesn't make you stronger, it doesn't make you a better player, it doesn't mean you'll have an advantage. "We think players should find gems that match their play style. Using a sports analogy, going into a sports shop and looking for equipment that fits you, buying the shoe that fits your foot, things like that." Capcom promised to patch the game post-launch should the community feel a gem is too strong or the balance is suffering. It's all part of a concerted effort to interact with the community much closer than Capcom has done in the past. Dedicated community managers will be in place to receive and direct feedback, and custom character titles and other game content will be offered as Street Fighter x Tekken tournament prizes. "Hopefully we can start to build a closer relationship with the fans, and we can hear their concerns and implement any support or tools," Ono said. "It'll be the start of a really close relationship, we hope, with the community."

Istorija apie tai kaip Bioware trečiojoje dalyje bandys integruoti naujokus i ME3 visatą Mass Effect 3 will be the third and final part of Shepard's story, but don't worry if you've never played the series before - BioWare has come up with a couple of ideas to ease you in. "In all honesty, we didn't do a really good job of new player orientation [in Mass Effect 2]," Mass Effect 3 producer Nick Clifford told IGN. "If you didn't play the first game then two was pretty jarring for the first half hour." Mass Effect 2 begins with Shepard being pieced back together after his ship, The Normandy, was blasted to pieces. There are references to the events of Mass Effect 1, and characters interact with you with an appropriate level of regard for your previous-game adventures. Not that you'd know any of that if you hadn't played Mass Effect 1. "If I'm a new player and some guy walks up to me and is like, 'Oh Shepard! Remember that one time?' I would be like, 'No, I don't remember that one time,'" Clifford said. "So we wanted to make sure that there aren't those moments that the player is like, 'Who is this? What's going on? What are they talking about?'" Clifford said Mass Effect 3 will alter character's behaviour toward Shepard depending on whether you import a saved game from Mass Effect 2, or start an adventure from fresh. BioWare will also integrate a "story so far narrative" to fill in the blanks. But Clifford wouldn't offer any more information on it. Mass Effect 2 on PS3 came with an interactive comic-book charting the storyline and main choices of Mass Effect 1. Mass Effect 1 isn't available on PS3.

SNK Playmore is developing a new portable version of its classic Neo-Geo console. Named the "Neo-Geo Keitai", or "Neo-Geo Portable", the mobile device plays 20 pre-loaded games from the original Neo-Geo's nineties era, Kotaku reports. The portable boasts a 4.3 inch LCD screen and 2GB of memory, presumably expandable through the included SD card slot. The games included are World Heroes, Ultimate 11, Top Player's Golf, Sengoku, Nam-1975, Mutation Nation, Last Resort, King of Monsters, Frenzy, Cyber-Lip, Fatal Furty Special, The Art of Fighting, Super Sidekicks, League Bowling, Metal Slug, Magical Lord, Baseball Stars Professional, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters '94, and Fatal Fury. Photos of the device show A, B, C and D, Menu, Start and two shoulder buttons, plus an AV Out port and a headphone jack. SNK has yet to formally announce the device, photos of which were posted last night on Japanese gaming blog Famicom-Plaza. The Neo-Geo was released in Japan and North America in 1991 during the SNES and Mega Drive era. SNK has recently begun re-releasing Neo-Geo titles on the Wii's Virtual Console service, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Ajajai kiek smagių žaidimėlių ten bus

The graphics card (GPU) inside the next Xbox will be "akin to" the £50 Radeon HD 6670, a new report has suggested. IGN heard from "sources close to the project" that the GPU will provide performance six times greater than Xbox 360, and 20 per cent greater than Wii U. A Radeon HD 6670 card supports DirectX 11, multi-display output, 3D and 1080p. Development kits matching the final system configuration of the next Xbox will be sent out in August, apparently. And mass production of the Radeon HD 6670-based GPU should begin by the end of 2012. The new console itself will ship to shops in late October or early November, IGN wrote. The release date and dev kit dates we've heard before. However, this is the most specific a report has been about the graphics card inside the next Xbox. We heard late last year that Microsoft planned two versions of its next Xbox. Both will bundle Kinect, although one machine will be a cheap, "pared down" set-top box; the other a "more fully featured", typical new console for hardcore gamers. Will this Radeon HD 6670-like GPU be fitted inside both models?
