  4. The first batch of Final Fantasy 13-2 DLC launches on Xbox Live on 7th February and PlayStation Network the day after, publisher Square Enix has announced. It's a Coliseum Battle titled Lightning & Amodar. These regular add-ons will pit the player against enemies from previous entries in the series, allowing you to recruit them into your party once they've been defeated. A price has not yet been confirmed. Square also announced plans to release additional story episodes for some of the game's key characters, though wouldn't offer additional detail on exactly what to expect. One of the game's endings offers up a 'To be continued...' tease. Is Square planning a downloadable epilogue? Or is Final Fantasy 13-3 on the way? The game, which launches on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this week, won an 8/10 from Eurogamer. "Hurling money at a development team that has been labouring without firm creative leadership for close to a decade now has led to a game that is, in many ways, as disjointed as its world, as rambling as its lead character," read Simon Parkin's Final Fantasy 13-2 review. "In those fragments excellence, confusion, beauty, strangeness, wonder and loss may all be found."
  5. Digitally-delivered versions of PlayStation Vita games will be cheaper than their boxed counterparts, Sony US has confirmed. A NeoGAF poster spotted Best Buy listings for Vita download codes with prices 10 per cent lower than the games' standard boxed RRPs. For example, Little Deviants was listed at $26.99 rather than $29.99, Uncharted: Golden Abyss at $44.99 rather than $49.99 and Hotshots Golf at $35.99 rather than $39.99. A Sony representative has subsequently confirmed that downloads will be slightly cheaper, as is also the case in Japan, though refused to confirm precise details. "I can confirm that there will be a discount on the downloadable PS Vita titles from PSN. Exact details have not yet been revealed, but be on the lookout for an announcement in the very near future," they told Shack News. We're chasing Sony UK to clarify the situation on this side of the Atlantic and will update when we learn more.
  6. A list of downloadable content for fighting game Street Fighter x Tekken has leaked onto the internet. Screw Attack has published a list of DLC, which includes gems, colours and new costumes, as well as new characters. The New Challengers Pack, down for $7.99, apparently adds four characters to the game: Cody and Guy from Capcom and Christie and Leo from Namco. The X Unlocker ($4.99) unlocks two secret characters, Akuma and Ogre, as well as all additional character colours and special modes without having to perform the in-game tasks to unlock them. The X Unlocker sounds like a time-saving DLC - it seems likely you'll be able to unlock Akuma and Ogre, two characters Capcom has teased previously, without it. All the DLC listed by Screw Attack amounts to around $55. The list is reproduced below. Boost Gem Pack 1 - $2.99, Includes 9 new gems to equip to your characters. Boost Gem Pack 2 - $2.99, Includes 9 new gems to equip to your characters. Colour Edit Pack 1 - FREE, Includes 4 new colours to use in the Colour Edit mode. Costume Swap S Pack - $9.99, Includes a new costume for each of the Street Fighter characters, based on a Tekken character. Costume Swap T Pack - $9.99, Includes a new costume for each of the Tekken characters, based on a Street Fighter character. Costume Swap X Pack - $15.99, A combination of the S Pack and T Pack - Includes new costumes for each character, based on characters from the opposite series. New Challengers Pack - $7.99, Adds 4 new characters to the game: Cody, Guy, Christie and Leo. X Unlocker - $4.99, Unlocks two secret characters, Akuma and Ogre, as well as all additional character colours and special modes without having to perform the in-game tasks to unlock them. It should be noted that both Cody and Guy were shown in an early Street Fighter x Tekken trailer. Capcom has confirmed 40 characters for the game so far. Expect another announcement for a final set of characters soon.

  17. Forthcoming snowboarding revival SSX ships with an online pass, publisher EA has confirmed. As detailed by GameInformer, all players will be able to access the game's Explore and Global Events multiplayer modes, however, any in-game credits earned will be withheld until an online pass code is activated. That code is included in new copies of the game, but those picking the game up second hand will have to fork over $10 for a digital voucher. "In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions," explained an EA spokesperson. "In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an Online Pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them." The credits let you unlock new items for your character and participate in special event drops across the two game modes.

    Wii U

Nintendo is happy to avoid getting bogged down in an expensive tech race against its rivals with the Wii U, so says CEO Satoru Iwata. Speaking during an investor Q&A last week, Iwata suggested that, although its new console will offer some titles featuring high-end visuals, the company plans to compete in other areas instead. "As we will showcase the Wii U at E3 in June this year, the detailed announcements must wait until then, but we are aiming to make a system which shall not be forced into competing with the others where the contenders can fight only with massive developer resources and long development times as their weapons," he said. Iwata added that Nintendo has always adopted a 'size isn't everything' approach to software development, and that will continue with the Wii U. "Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop. "It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion. "When you look at Nintendo's software, extraordinary rich graphics, massive gameplay volume and astonishing rendition effects are not necessarily the appealing point. It is, in fact, important for us that our games are appealing in other ways as well." He offered Nintendo's quirky Rhythm Heaven series as an example, insisting that, "if we had adopted rich photo-realistic graphics, it would have lost much of its appeal." "It is not necessary for us to deploy a huge number of people in order to develop such games," he continued, stating that, more than ever, Nintendo is bringing in third parties when it does need to develop more graphically complex titles. "When we need massive power and have a lack of internal resources, we collaborate with outside resources and pour necessary resources to where they are needed. We are increasing the frequency of working with outside developers where Mr. Miyamoto and our internal developers alone used to develop. "What's important here is not to narrow down what we can do," he added. "Rather, we have to create the dynamic range of appeals that the consumers can appreciate." Iwata pointed to The Legend of Zelda series as one franchise that will certainly benefit from the the Wii U's additional horsepower. "As I mentioned, it is true that, in some software areas, we need to be engaged in the power games," he reaffirmed. "Take The Legend of Zelda franchise, for example, the fans must be looking for the graphic representations that they do not see as cheap at all when the title is released for the Wii U. When it is necessary, we do not hesitate to role out our resources." As confirmed last week, the Wii U will be on shelves before the end of the year. Neither Microsoft or Sony has made any official comment as to when their new systems will hit the market.
  19. You-hoo, PC gamers, there's a juicy sale going on over at EA's digital distribution shop Origin.
