Overview
Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War is a first-person shooter developed by both Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on November 13, 2020.
The game had additional development by High Moon Studios, Beenox, Activision Shanghai, and Sledgehammer Games.
The seventeenth main installment of the Call of Duty series (and the fifth main installment of the Black Ops sub-series), Cold War brings the Black Ops series back to its 20th century Cold War roots. It is the first in the series developed for ninth-generation video game consoles.
Story
The main story is set between the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II, putting players in the role of a customizable CIA agent, known only by their codename "Bell", in the year 1981. Led by Special Officer Russell Adler, and aided by some of the main characters from the series (including Alex Mason and Frank Woods), Bell is tasked with hunting down a spy known as "Perseus", who had infiltrated a top-secret US program known as Operation Greenlight.
Gameplay
Along with the traditional single-player campaign, the game features updated competitive multiplayer and co-operative Zombies modes. Both modes share the same character customization, as the Zombies mode now takes place in the same timeframe as the Multiplayer mode (with player Operators recruited to a CIA response team known as "Requiem"). While the "Blackout" survival-shooter mode does not make a return, the game features a new large-scale mode known as "Fireteam" (which splits the 40-player server into four-man teams).
Along with cross-platform multiplayer and player progression, the game boasts being the first in the series to feature "cross-generational multiplayer" (as PS5 and Xbox Series players can play with PS4 and XONE players). The progression system also ties with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, allowing players to level up by playing on Modern Warfare, Warzone, or Cold War.
