This week’s issue of Jump has a small feature on PSP’s upcoming Final Fantasy Type-0. The preview focuses on Ace and Queen, two of the game’s many playable characters.

 

When in battle, Ace, the white-haired boy, can perform attacks with different types of cards by using the analog stick and pressing buttons. Queen, the glasses-wearing brunette, hits enemies with combos and other special techniques.

 

Orience, the world in which Final Fantasy Type-0 is set, has four nations, each powered by a crystal, and each at war with each other. Each are named after the four major Chinese constellations. They are:

 

* Suzaku the blazing wing

* Byakko the steel arm

* Genbu the solid shield

* Seiryu the incorruptible eye

 

The twelve playable characters in Type-0 are from class zero in Rubrum, Suzaku’s magic school.

Final Fantasy Type-0 Has Many Free Missions For Players To Complete

 

Let’s say you want to take a break of the core story in Final Fantasy Type-0 or maybe you completed the game and saved Suzaku. If you’re up for another challenge just talk to Moogle – the military operation organization guidance logistic expert. He gives players free missions to complete. According to Dengeki PlayStation, there are many free missions in the game with different conditions to clear.

 

The magazine also had a few more details about Machina and Rem. As mentioned earlier, Machina wields a Volt Rapier and Rem equips two daggers. Machina actually has a weapon in each hand too. With a speedy series of pokes and strikes, Machina can easily rack up 10 or more hits in a combo. Use Machina’s Spin Drive ability to make him spin with both rapiers, damaging anything within his radius. Rem uses a mix of offensive magic and her dual daggers. Her Aspir Venom special attack continuously deals damage and saps MP from enemies. This restores Rem’s MP meter so she can cast more spells.

 

Students in Suzaku can summon Ifrit. A Final Fantasy fire elemental staple, Ifrit is ablaze when he comes to battle. He can spew fire and ignite areas using an Eruption attack. Golem, a stone defender, is another summon. In Final Fantasy Type-0, Golem is a giant who can trample enemies or hit them with a rocket punch.

Here are some Final Fantasy Type-0 live play Nico Nico Live, a user from a9vg have described some gameplay details along with a screen captured:

 

- Airship system in the world map seems like quite similiar to FFXII which is menu based by clicking the destination and it will bring the player there.

 

- Summon has 40 seconds limit

 

- Player can chose to use which summon before starting any mission.

 

- There are shooting battle while controlling air ship.

 

- Developer said the game can be play 2000 hours.

 

- Searching Chocobo for learning magic

 

- World map is huge

New Final Fantasy Type-0 details

July 5th, 2011

 

- 30-40 hours of play time

- 100 hours to fully play the game

- 80% complete with development

- Probably out in Japan this fall instead of summer (delay most likely in part due to PSN outage)

- Music tie-up

- Game is basically complete aside from multiplayer; team working on ad-hoc play now

- Fighting game style elements such as movement cancelling

- Hold down buttons to repeat moves instead of constantly pressing the button

- Button assignment includes: triangle for your character’s standard attack, circle and square can be assigned to attacks and magic, X for defense and defensive magic, and L + d-pad to swap your character

- Square Enix considering downloadable version

- 14 main characters

- Had 40 main characters at one point

- Square Enix Members connectivity: See stats on character use and enemy kills

- Multiplayer: Host can turn multiplayer on/off

- Other players can come into the game if multiplayer is on

- Select multiplayer and select a host to join a multiplayer game

- External player is forced out from your multiplayer game when you reach a save point

- Time limit for multiplayer

- Extend the time by helping the host player

- Change your party characters/equipment at save points

- Main characters are from your school’s “Class Zero”

- Students from other classes will also team up with you for missions (different colored cloaks)

- Weather-related changes

- Weapons change in strength and firing range based on the weather

- Shiva becomes stronger in the snow

"Crystarium" Spotted in Final Fantasy Type-0

 

Final Fantasy Type-0 shares a common mythology with Final Fantasy XIII. But it may have another connection.

 

A player who sampled Type-0 at a demo event in Odaiba today claims that there is a "Crystarium" of some form in the game. You use this strengthen your abilities.

 

Crystarium is, of course, the character growth system from Final Fantasy XIII. In FFXIII, each character has a set of roles, which are like jobs. You can use CP, earned in battle, to climb through a visual skill chart for each role, earning new skills and increasing your HP, MP and other parameters.

 

Assuming the account is accurate, this would be the first we've head of a Crystarium system in Type-0. Square Enix actually hasn't said much about the game's character growth component.

 

Some other points from the player's impressions included:

 

The end of the demo showed the text "Battle Starts Soon." It's unclear what this means, as a release date has not yet been announced. Perhaps we'll either get a release date soon, or the demo will be released on PSN.

Famitsu's impressions mentioned support characters named Tabata D and Kitase P, named after the game's director and producer. This player was helped by a character named "WADY." CEO Yochi Wada perhaps? Another player found a "Nomura CP" who wielded dual guns and said "Sorry to have kept you waiting."

The game's Kill Sight system felt similar to The 3rd Birthday's Overdive system according to this player.

Famitsu's editor complained that the camera has some problems in tight quarters. This player had the same complaint.

In the config menu, you can switch the game's L-shift buttons from the d-pad to the face buttons. L brings up a menu for switching characters and calling out your reserve characters. See this story for a control chart.

There appears to be a battle stadium style area, although you couldn't go there in the demo.
