Final Fantasy Versus XIII NOT Cancelled

Despite rumours to the contrary last week, Square Enix's CEO has revealed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII has not been cancelled.

 

The reports originated from Kotaku, which quoted an unnamed source suggesting Square Enix had decided not to officially announce the game's cancellation due to stock price fears, but that work had ceased on it some months prior. According to Yoichi Wada, none of this was true as he confirmed via Twitter today that the game is alive and well.

Many were convinced the game had been canned after a suspicious absence at E3 this year. When reports of the title's cancellation surfaced on Kotaku last week, Square Enix refused to comment on rumours or speculation, further fuelling our fears.

 

The fact that the game lives on, however, means the reported Final Fantasy XIII announcement expected in September could very well relate to it in some way. Considering the title has been in development since 2006, we're long overdue for some news.

 

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was originally announced in 2006 as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of games. The other two titles in the series announced at the same time, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0 have both been released, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 has also been announced and launched since.

Confirmed: No Final Fantasy Versus XIII At The Tokyo Game Show

 

It appears that another rumor surrounding Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been proven false.

 

Square Enix has confirmed via twitter that the action rpg won’t appear at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Instead the company’s focus will be on the newly announced Lightning’s Return: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV. Both of those games are scheduled for a 2013 debut.

 

Announced at E3 over 6 years ago, Final Fantasy Versus XIII remains one of the company’s most anticipated projects. At the recent Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event, the game’s directed asked fans for their patience once again.

Nearly 2 years have passed since Square Enix first demonstrated in game footage of its upcoming action rpg to the public.

While details surrounding the long awaited Final Fantasy Versus XIII continue to be secluded for another year, word on the street suggests that the media blackout regarding Versus XIII may end as early as the new year.

According to the Final Fantasy grapevine, Square Enix is preparing a special conference to be held January 15th-17th. It’s rumored that Noctis and company will have their day in the sun once more after a two year absence as new in-game Final Fantasy Versus XIII footage is expected to be revealed. A new playable character will also reportedly be shown as well.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII won’t be the only rpg in the spotlight at this event, assuming the unconfirmed reports are to be believed. New details on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy X HD are also on tap for the event.

While Square Enix has held a similar conference in Japan nearly two years ago which focused on all things Final Fantasy ( including Versus XIII ), we’ve been burned plenty of times in the past by rumors concerning the elusive PS3 exclusive.

Until this news is confirmed by those in the know, it would be wise if we all took the above information with a truck load of kosher salt before getting too excited.

Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3 is Coming to Xbox One, Too

Final Fantasy XV will also be coming to the Xbox One, as announced by Square Enix today. As you may have heard last night, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has now become Final Fantasy XV. The game was revealed during Sony's E3 conference with no exclusivity mentioned. Today, we can confirm that it is now coming for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

 

The game will be developed with DirectX11, allowing the developer to port the game to Xbox One.
