With all the hype behind DirectX 12, the upcoming API update for Xbox One and PC which is due in 2015, it will be foolish to think Sony are not working to improve their own API. We asked Confetti FX founder Wolfgang Engel about how Sony’s custom API for the PS4 will stack up against DX 12.

“Sony’s own custom API is more low-level and definitely something that graphics programmers love. It gives you a lot of control. DirectX 12 will be a bit more abstract because it has to work with many different GPUs, while the PS4 API can go down to the metal,” he explained.

It’s important to note that Wolfgang is not criticizing DirectX and in fact he thinks it will turn out to be great.

 

Wolfgang Engel was at the GDC booth this year where he spoke about Compute Shader Optimizations across three AMD GPUs: RADEON 6770, RADEON 7750 and RADEON 7850. Will those same optimization methods be applicable on the PlayStation 4?

“Yes, but there will be other PS4 specific optimizations, not available on PC, that will help increase performance even more,” explains Wolfgang.

So I apologize for some of the games we pushed back, but when people ask me “We’ve been saying the PS4 is very easy to develop for, why are teams taking time?” The reason is, it’s very easy to develop games on the PS4, except that PS4 can do so much, that a team’s ambition is much higher. What they are trying to achieve, they are challenging, y’know, something new. More realistic graphics, social connectivity, or seamless integration of single-player and multiplayer. And they are encountering new kinds of challenges, so they have to take more time than they anticipated. But luckily, more people are now more understanding and more accomodating for the needs of the development team. And they (gamers) say they’d rather wait to play the best game the team can make rather than play a rushed title; because each development is such a big effort.

Hori pakurs pigiu priedu PS4 

Hori will be releasing their “Liquid Crystal Monitor 4″ for the Playstation 4 which will be priced for 32,184 yen (approximately $314). Essentially it is like having a somewhat portable system on the go (you will still need to plug into a socket though). The monitor’s max resolution is 1080p.

You simply attach the monitor onto the Playstation 4 and connect the HDMI cable to the screen then finally plug in the power supply to the wall. When you’re done using it you simply fold it over like if it was a laptop screen (I wouldn’t put it on my lap though if I were you).

No word of a release outside Japan as of yet.

If you want the fun of the wheel without massacring your monthly earnings, the Japanese manufacturer Hori came up with a super-cheap alternative, announced today for the Japanese market.

The Racing Wheel 4 is basically the successor of Hori’s Racing Wheel 3 for PlayStation 3, and it comes at the very convenient price of 7,980 yen, which translates to just south of 80 bucks.

The wheel, which you can see portrayed above and below, is very similar in build to its predecessor, but has a switch to select PS4 and PS3 modes (it’s also compatible with Sony’s older console), and comes with force feedback rumble.

Scuf Gaming controllers have become increasingly popular within the FPS community, and the company has been teasing a release in June. Now we’re at the end of the month and something finally seems to be moving. While we don’t have an official release announcement yet, we have a  count down.

The counter is set to end at 5 PM Eastern on Monday, and will probably lead at the very least to the official release date of the controller.
