During the livescast following the PlayStation Meeting held in New York,  that has seen the announcement of the new PS4 Pro, Guerrilla Games Technical Director Michiel Van Deer Leeuw, Tripwire Interactive President John Gibson and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Vice President of Production Peter Wyse talked more about their studios’ views on the new console.

  • Van Deer Leeuw mentioned that Guerrilla Games is almost trying to get close to a BBC documentary in terms nature with Horizon: Zero Dawn, and the PS4 Pro gets them one step closer. They are doing already well with the original PS4, but the extra fidelity and color range of the Pro means “a couple of extra steps,” especially in nature scenes where sunlight is really important.
  • Wyse talked about Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, mentioning that Monolith will let players choose between quality and resolution. The quality setting pushes draw distances “farther than ever,” among other things. He also explained that Rocksteady will be able to have crisper scenes on Batman: Arkham VR.
  • Gibson mentioned that Killing Floor 2 will support 4K resolution, and it will use HDR to enhance the look of a lot of “dark and creepy spaces.” In a dark game like KF2, dark areas look really like real ones would.
  • According to Van Deer Leeuw, 4K and HDR are a bit of a hard sell because you really need to see them in action to understand what they bring to the table. HDR looks so natural that you might not notice it, but when you see it, “you can’t unsee it.”
  • In Killing Floor 2 there are classes based on shooting enemies really far away. Gibson brought it as an example where 4K lets you see much more detail at long distances.
  • In Shadow of Mordor those who don’t have a 4K TV will still be able to take advantage of the higher resolution textures, smoother edges, and everything is going to look better.
  • Van Deer Leeuw talked more about supersampling on standard 1080p TVs, mentioning that it’s possible to render at 4K internally and then supersample down to 1080p. It looks “much nicer,” as supersampling is the best kind of anti-aliasing. The image retains all the texture details, shader details and more. On top of that the frame rate might be smoother, eliminating frame drops, the resolution of shadow maps can be increased, and anistropic filtering can be improved. Guerrilla intends to “twist all of those knobs” until they find a solution that is “really really good” for people that have a normal HDTV.
  • He also added that HDR is the “cutting edge” for color. People are not used to grading in HDR, and developers will need to get to grips with it. Guerrilla is getting better week by week at it. He doesn’t know what the end result of the process will be, but so far everything looks nicer, with beautiful vistas, with sun and light blending together better. Studios might also learn to use 4K better with time.
  • Wyse explained that studios like NetherRealm can explore how much they can push the environments in games like Injustice 2, and cranks cinematics up to the same frame rate as gameplay. The studio is starting to play with it, and they’re just getting started.
  • Gibson explained that Killing Floor 2‘s engine already does everything in HDR behind the scenes, and now the developers will be able to bring it to the screen. Van Deer Leeuw added that most engines are like that, but they have to cap the colors at the end of the pipeline to deal with standard TVs.
  • According to Van Deer Leeuw, since most engines already support this kind of tech, adoption is going to be quick, and he would be surprised if the vast majority of games won’t be in HDR “very soon.”
  • According to Gibson, the additional workload to support PS4 Pro “really wasn’t that bad.” Once Tripwire got the devkits they immediately started to experiment and test the boundaries of what they could do.
  • Van Deer Leeuw thinks that in four or five months there will be so much common knowledge in the industry that adopting the new tech will be even easier.

On Horizon: Zero Dawn itself, which was among the games shown running at 4K on PS4 Pro, Guerrilla Games art director Jan-Bart Van Beek said the demo wasn’t actually running at native 4K resolution, but that it was “so close” it’d be hard to tell.

“It’s not native 4K. It is perceptively so close that you wouldn’t be able to see the difference with normal human eyes,” he said.

Q: Will PS4 Pro have separate or exclusive games?
There will not be any PS4 Pro-exclusive games. Because PS4 Pro and the standard PS4 are members of the same family, both systems will be fully compatible with all past, present, and future PS4 titles, including PlayStation VR. All PS4 games are PS4 Pro games, and vice-versa.

Following PS4 Pro’s launch on November 10 in North America, virtually all new PS4 game releases moving forward will be able to take advantage of PS4 Pro capabilities on day one, or in some cases shortly after launch via a downloadable update. Some titles previously released will be updated to take advantage of PS4 Pro features, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last of Us Remastered, Infamous Second Son, Shadow of Mordor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and more.

Q: Will all PS4 games be compatible with PS4 Pro?
Yes, all existing PS4 games are fully compatible with PS4 Pro.
 Developers are able to add PS4 Pro enhancements to previously released PS4 games via a downloadable update if they choose to.

 


Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

Q: Will PS4 Pro be compatible with my existing PS4 downloaded games, saved data, and PlayStation Network Friend lists?
Yes. PS4 Pro exists in the same digital ecosystem as the standard PS4 in all regards; two PS4 console systems, one PlayStation Network, one PS4 community. This means you can start playing a game on your PS4 Pro, upload the saved data to online storage using PS Plus (sold separately), and pick up your progress on a standard PS4 in another room. It also means that all content and saved data that you already own on PS4 are fully compatible with PS4 Pro on day one.

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?
There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.

Q: Will PS4 Pro owners have a performance advantage in online games when competing against standard PS4 players?
Generally, no. Playtesting and balancing is up to each game developer, and while it’s true that PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware can drive smoother or more stable frame rates in supported titles, developers have many tools and processes they can use to prevent imbalances.

Q: If I’m using PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, and I’m playing a PS4 game without PS4 Pro features. Will it still output in 4K?
Yes, older PS4 games without dedicated PS4 Pro features will output at 4K when played on PS4 Pro and a supported 4K TV using a Premium HDMI cable. You will not, however, see any visual benefits without support for PS4 Pro features.

last of us remasteris atrodo dabar bus remaster 4k. arba zemesnej rezoj jeigu noresi 60 fps.

 

 

Speaking to Naughty Dog at the event, we were told that The Last of Us Remastered - just like its base PS4 version - will have a 30Hz mode that features enhanced image quality. The existing PS4 game features higher resolution shadows maps and those are joined by a full, native 4K pixel count on the PS4 Pro. This drops down to a lower resolution at 60fps, where we're told to expect improved performance compared to the original release on base hardware.
