Never before in this chapter are the fatal events to lead our to make the difficult decision to leave for distant lands is not the promise of a millionaire treasure, nor the fame and glory; but a dramatic situation that can overturn the cards on the table.

The desert environments with strong colors red blood that stand before the players are in fact fully explorable and at first glance seem to propose different approaches to the mission: in fact the suspension of disbelief does not have such a long life, the locations are built so that they can recreate the feeling a huge open space despite the existence of a single junction and only need the continuation of the story.

The immense landscapes stand out on the retina of the player, featuring a broad and rich in minute details; details that only a few software companies in the world are able to carve and donate to their productions.

Uncharted 4: End of a thief managed to dispel almost all of the (very few) doubts that tormented me before the single-player test, carried out last Friday behind closed doors in that of Milan. The game seems to granite in every aspect: the story of this new chapter starts from a premise more mature than previous episodes - without neglecting the typical humor of the series - while the already solid gameplay has been touched up with some interesting additions and supported by a level design that allows a variety of different approaches. The only question appears on the narrative front: Naughty Dog will be able to reconcile the lockout and masterful storytelling of previous episodes with the new (albeit apparent) freedom of action typical of this fourth chapter? There are only a few weeks to find out, but on May 10 has never been so far away.

At Game Developers Conference 2016, Naughty Dog Artists Bradford Smith and Rogelio Olguin showcased the work done on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End using the Substance texture design toolset in a panel, while Technical Artist Andrew Maximov talked about the technical art culture at Naughty Dog.

From the panels, we learned quite a few things. We summarized the one about Substance a few weeks ago, but today we finally get to see the screenshots in their full glory. If you want to see the full video, you’ll have to find it manually here, because it’s behind a form that you have to fill in order to gain access. Maximov’s talk is available here.

Here are a few new, interesting and even just funny elements:

  • The first iteration of the wind system was too complicated, so it was revamped. Now the only parameters the artists have to take care of are the wind intensity (how far the wind can push a particular object), and the speed.
  • At times simplistic and even silly solutions to complex problems end up paying dividends.
  • The system that governs hair and gravity is a “cheap hack” which is literally just three lines of shader code.
  • Individual plans moving under Drake’s feet is also a shader trick, and couldn’t have been done otherwise.
  • At times Naughty Dog had to cut a particular implementation out of the game and rewrite it, and discovered that the new one was better. When you realize you have to cut something, it’s likely that you have already outgrown it. Every time they ended up throwing something up, it was for the better.
  • Tools don’t matter. What matters is how they solve problems.
  • Particles in Uncharted 4’s engine freely interact with materials. This allows effects like dynamic damage.
  • When you throw a grenade, it spawns a particles that moves the foliage.
  • Dirt and mud effects on characters is procedural. If Drake gets muddy and then steps in the water, then the mud will be washed away.
  • When Drake is tired a fatigue system changes the animations to make him actually look tired. This actually communicates with the shaders, making him also look sweaty.
  • There’s dust all over the game’s environments. When a character walks through it, a particle is created, removing the dust in that particular location, creating a footprint.
  • The entirety of the E3 demo was made in seven weeks.
  • The secret of Naughty Dog is 100% its people. They’re relentless in seeking perfection and they never give up. There’s no actual secret. Maximov simply never saw anyone else work so hard and so much in his entire life.
  • Maximov remembers waking up a texture artist at 3 AM when he was sleeping with his face on his Cintiq tablet. He was just napping for an hour before he’d keep working. And they can do that kind of thing for a month.
  • Every tool created by Maximov for Naughty Dog has a “Help” button and a “A” button. The first brings up all the tutorials and help files for the tool, the second sends him a note also showing him who pressed that button and what they were seeing at that time. He would make a point to be at that person’s desk within a minute to provide support.
  • A couple of months before starting to crunch really hard, Maximov implemented a button that brings up random quotes taken from social media by players of the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta. They’re not the “ass kissy” kind of quotes, but they’re there to remember developers what they’re doing it for. It’s not just about making the most polished and most beautiful game ever created. Developers aren’t just making polygons and animations. They’re making memories for people. They’re allowing people to experience things together that maybe they’ll remember and cherish for the rest of their lives.
  • A similar system was then implemented in the script compiler, ending up amusing developers because one of the quote was “you guys should do a dinosaur game.”

Naughty Dog plays Uncharted 4: Madagascar Preview

Below you can read the most relevant points that they made:

  • Since early playtests, the developers wanted a very accessible handling for the jeep, but the initial feedback wasn’t very good, so a lot of iteration was done for it.
  • Driving on rocks, grass, water and mud feels different.
  • The developers created a sort of “interrupt system” for conversations on the jeep. It stops conversations when you leave the vehicle, and then they restart naturally when you come back. Conversations can start and stop over and over, and it feels very natural.
  • A lot of iteration was done with this, tuning priorities on what could interrupt a conversation, and what needed to be said “now,” and take priority over the ongoing conversation. For instance reacting to a sudden situation.
  • Around the time in which Uncharted 3 was shipped, Naughty Dog had a very scripted prototype of a vehicle. It didn’t really look like what Uncharted 4 has, but it allowed the developers to start determining what they wanted from adventuring with a vehicle in anUncharted game.
  • Lots of layers of animation go into things like the bridge that almost collapses in the Madagascar level.
  • There was a lot of testing on how big the open spaces where, in order set objectives for those spaces.
  • If you want to go around on foot you can go really far, and leave the vehicle behind by quite a lot. It depends on where you are in the level, but the developers want to encourage player choice on whether to move on foot or drive.
  • If you leave your companions behind, they’ll comment about it. They won’t just sit on the jeep, but they will walk around it, kick the tires, inspect it and more. They will be active.
  • The game has a “pretty significant lenght.” In most cases you’ll be playing longer than in the first three games. It’s a “pretty meaty game” and since when it went gold, it’s been taking Meyer a long time to play through it, longer than he expected.
  • It’s very hard to pin down the length of a typical playthrough because there is no typical playthrough. There are too many options and choices, and certain players can explore more or less in the more open levels.
  • A “lot more” about the multiplayer is gonna be revealed before the release of the game.
  • Meyer teased that if you like taking screenshots of the game and of the beautiful environments you will like what the team set up for it. They “definitely” tried to support taking really nice screenshots.
  • Photo mode can be accessed with R3+L3, and can be turned off. You can see the full pause menu below.

Uncharted4-Pause-Menu-670x376.jpg

  • The team thought a lot on how to help players think about stealth from the beginning, because they knew many would just drive the jeep into the enemies and get shot up. They started by adding some approach paths for the jeep that are a bit more hidden, so you don’t need to walk all the way down.
  • The towers in Madagascar are an ideal environment for enemy snipers.
  • Control schemes are “highly customizable.” The team has done a lot of work so that players can customize controls in accordance with their gameplay style and preferences.
  • Naughty Dog worked with someone that helped them making sure that people with certain disabilities won’t have problems controlling the game.
  • You can drive off a cliff, and that kills you and respawns you at the latest checkpoint.
  • Naughty Dog isn’t showing the menus because there are spoilers there.
  • There’s a lot yet to be revealed about the game.
  • Some of the trophies will be revealed before the game comes out, since they normally leak anyway.
  • Sam and Sully will shoot while you’re driving. The team experimented with allowing the player to shoot while driving, but there were all sorts of control problems, and it also encouraged players to never leave the vehicle, so it was removed.
  • Difficulty settings can actually add different types of enemies. For instance at the tower in the Madagascar demo there are only snipers on normal difficulty, but Hard and Crushing add enemies with RPGs, which are particularly lethal in combination with snipers. In harder difficulty settings enemies are also more accurate, they’re quicker to see you, and stealth is harder.
  • On Crushing you get less information on who is seeing you and where they are (you don’t see the threat indicators showing who is about to notice you. They will still give audio clues though). One of the developers took over an hour to beat the tower encounter on Crushing difficulty.
  • Enemies on Crushing difficulty are also much more aggressive in following you and finding you if you try to get back into stealth.
  • Enemies have different behaviors depending on whether you’re on the jeep or on foot.
  • There is more than one situation in which you can sneak through an encounter and not kill anyone. There’s even a trophy bound to this. There are also times in which combat is unavoidable. It depends on what makes sense for the pacing and the story of the game.
  • Sam and Sully are really helpful in combat scenarios. They don’t shoot blindly. They’ll spot enemies for you. If an enemy grabs you they’ll come and take him off you. There are team takedowns where you can take down an enemy together with them. When you’re in stealth, they will take down enemy stealthily as well.
  • Co-op would take away from the crafted experience of following Nathan Drake’s adventure. There will be no campaign co-op.
  • There will be a soundtrack released for the game, in both digital format and CD.
  • Both markings and threat indicators can be turned off in the menus.
  • If you don’t do certain actions or don’t explore certain locations you can miss some conversations and banter between the characters. A lot of dialog is dependent on how you play and where you go.
  • Markings carry over even if you die. When you come back enemies that you marked are still marked.
  • A lot of iteration has been done on friendly AI to make sure that they don’t get spotted by the enemies, but they’re still near you, active and helpful. The team also worked on balancing how much they’ll take down enemies without being too invasive (making you feel they’re taking down enemies that you wanted to take down yourself).
  • The reticles give you information. There’s a dot in the reticle that bounces around showing where your bullets are actually hitting. All guns have peculiar patterns that you can get used to.
  • You can skip cinematics if you so choose.
  • There was a lot of iteration for melee looking at previous games of the series. The developers tried to incorporate melee into everything, allowing you to attack enemies while vaulting over obstacles, swinging with the grapple hook and more. Every action you can do during exploration can actually be changed into melee.
  • There’s no sprint button, but in combat you move a little bit faster than you normally do.
  • The Jeep can’t be destroyed by enemies, but it can take damage.
  • In the next few weeks there will be more videos. Naughty Dog will talk about a few details like control options and more.

"I went in to CEX... to actually buy myself a camera lens," Shabz told us, "and when I went to the counter to purchase the lens I saw behind the shop assistant that there was Uncharted 4 so as a try I said can I also get a copy of Uncharted 4, he just picked it up and rang it through the till. The game cost £55."

Shabz tells us that he's already played the game's first two chapters, and that the single-player campaign "is so far running fine". "May have a few frame drops but not so noticeable," he said, adding that "at heavy firefight it wasn't too bad with framerates".

Multiplayer isn't yet playable, however, he added, with the option currently "greyed out" on the main menu. Trophies aren't yet synching to Sony's servers either, nor is the trophy list viewable in the trophies area. The DLC code included with the Day One Edition, which includes bonus multiplayer DLC, doesn't yet work either, Shabs says.

UPDATE: All Uncharted 4 stock sold at CEX and on eBay was the result of a violent assault and theft, PlayStation has said.

"We can confirm that unfortunately some contents from a lorry transporting a variety of video game and DVD titles, including a quantity of the much anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, was stolen in the UK, during a violent assault," a spokesperson told MCV.

"We are doing everything in our power to assist the police in their ongoing criminal investigation.

"To be clear, we have yet to ship any stock of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End to retail and so any suggestion that UK retailers have broken the official street date is not correct.

We have some unfortunate news to report that a number of copies of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End were stolen while in transit. While we are continuing to work with the police to resolve the matter – which is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation – it appears that a few copies of the game have surfaced in the UK.

    • Right now, ARC Raiders has that pre-update feeling where every run matters a bit more than usual. With Riven Tides getting close, loads of players are pushing trials hard, stacking XP, and trying not to waste a single decent drop. Some are even looking for faster ways to buy Raider Tokens so they can head into the next patch better prepared. Fair enough, honestly. This week's trial list isn't impossible, but it does ask for a bit of planning, and a couple of tasks can go sideways fast if you treat them like standard checklist stuff. Lightning Touch This one sounds silly until you try it and get flattened. To finish Lightning Touch, you need to be in the Marshlands during an Electromagnetic Storm and live through a direct lightning hit. That last part is where most runs fall apart. You can't just sprint around in open water and hope for the best. You need enough health, some defensive setup, and a route that doesn't leave you exposed to everything else on the map. The storm itself is already messy. Add enemy pressure and bad footing, and it turns into chaos. Still, when it finally works, you'll know. There's that split second where you think you're done, then somehow you're still standing. Swamp Sweep and Resource Extraction Swamp Sweep is more grounded, but it can drag if you go in with the wrong loadout. The ARC units in the marshy parts of the Dam Battlegrounds are annoying to spot, and the terrain slows you down just enough to make every fight feel awkward. A solid mid-range weapon helps more than people think. You don't want to be too close in that mud, and long-range isn't always practical with all the clutter. Then there's Resource Extraction, which is probably the most stressful of the bunch. Calling in high-value air drops sounds simple on paper. In practice, it's a giant signal flare saying, come fight me. If you're solo, set traps early and keep moving between bits of cover. If you've got a squad, one person watching the flanks makes a huge difference. Comet Destruction Comet Destruction is the trial that wastes the most time if you're unlucky. The Comet ARC units don't exactly line up for you. They move, they disappear, and if your damage is weak, the fight gets drawn out fast. Burst damage is the safe play here. A sniper works, sure, but anything that lets you hit hard before they reposition is worth bringing. It's also one of those jobs where patience matters more than aggression. A lot of players rush the chase and end up burning resources for nothing. Better to track carefully, get your angle, and commit when you know you can finish it cleanly. Why this week matters That's really why these trials matter more than they might've a month ago. Riven Tides is close enough now that every bit of progress feels useful, whether that's gear, XP, or just learning how to handle rougher encounters under pressure. If you're trying to go into the update with a stronger setup, it makes sense to squeeze this week for all it's worth, and plenty of players also keep U4GM in mind for game currency and item support when they want to save time and stay ready for the next grind.
    • Diamond Dynasty feels a bit frantic right now. That big April 10 update dumped a ton on everyone, and this weekend is where most players either catch up or fall behind. If you're still short on progress, now's the time to lock in. Some people are grinding every spare inning, others are cleaning out the market, and a lot of us are doing both. As a professional platform for in-game currency and items, u4gm is known for being convenient and reliable, and you can buy MLB The Show 26 stubs in u4gm if you want a smoother ride while putting the rest of your squad together. XP choices that actually matter The 2nd Inning program is the main pressure point, no question. You can feel it every time you load in. People are chasing those last chunks of XP and trying to decide which boss makes more sense. Randy Johnson or Babe Ruth has become one of those debates that won't die, and honestly, I get why. Early in the year, an elite starter can carry you through a lot of rough games, so Randy has real value. Then again, Babe is Babe. One swing changes a game, and power cards tend to stay useful for a long time. If you're still working missions, don't ignore that 91 OVR Carlos Correa card. His swing plays better than some people expected, and he's one of those cards that quietly helps you stack stats without forcing your lineup into something awkward. Weekend Classic cards and the market shift The other big story is the Weekend Classic ending on Tuesday, April 14. That's where the market gets interesting. Reward cards like 92 OVR Victor Martinez and 92 OVR Bernie Williams are sitting in that familiar spot where supply still exists, but not for much longer. Once the event closes, no fresh cards are coming in. That's usually when prices start creeping, then jump when people realise they waited too long. If one of those guys is part of your long-term lineup, buying before the cutoff makes sense. If you're holding extras, this is the part where patience matters. A lot of experienced players wait for the first wave of post-event panic and then sell into it. Why selling now might be the smart move The April Spotlight Drop 2 market has calmed down enough that you can make clean decisions without guessing every ten minutes. That matters. This is a good window to go through your binder and be honest about what you're actually using. If a card isn't making your Ranked squad, isn't helping with missions, and isn't tied to a collection you care about right now, it's probably worth moving. Plenty of players hang onto too much fluff and then get caught short when the next content wave lands. Building up a stub balance before another mid-April release is just smart roster management. It gives you room to react instead of scrambling. Getting ready for the next reset So the plan for the next couple of days is pretty simple. Finish the XP grind, make a real decision on your boss pick, use the cards that speed up mission progress, and don't let event rewards sit in your binder without a purpose. This part of the cycle always feels messy, but that's also where sharp players get ahead. A little prep now saves a lot of regret later, and if you need a reliable place many players already know for game currency and item support, U4GM is often part of that conversation while people get themselves ready for the next drop.
    • The Fairytale Partners event lands on April 14, 2026 at 1:00 PM UTC, and if you've been sitting on a pile of dice waiting for something worth burning them on, this is probably it. The event only runs until April 19, so there's not much room to drift through the first day and “figure it out later.” If you're already planning your sticker progress too, plenty of players also keep an eye on places to buy Monopoly Go Stickers while they push event rewards, since this kind of five-day sprint can line up nicely with album goals. Just make sure your account has reached board level 5 before you try to join, because that tiny requirement still catches people every single time. How the event actually works If you've played a partner event before, you'll settle in fast. You team up with four partners and work on four separate fairytale-themed builds. Progress comes from event tokens, and those tokens mostly come from daily milestones, banner events, and tournaments. Once you've got enough, you spin the partner wheel and hope the game feels generous for once. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it absolutely doesn't. That's the part nobody can control. What you can control is how often you're active, when you roll, and whether you're wasting dice chasing low-value rewards when a stronger tournament window is right around the corner. Pick people who'll actually play This is where runs usually fall apart. A lot of players rush their invites, fill empty slots with randoms, and then spend the next four days carrying dead weight. It sounds obvious, but don't partner with anyone unless you trust them to log in and contribute. Friends are best. An active Discord group works too. You want people who respond, not people who vanish after the first few spins. A balanced team matters more than lucky wheel drops. If each person handles their share, the event feels manageable. If one or two players go missing, it turns into a dice sink fast, and that's usually when frustration kicks in. One build first, then move on A smart way to approach this is to finish one landmark before spreading tokens across the whole board. A lot of players split progress too early because they want to see movement everywhere. It looks nice, sure, but it slows down the rewards that could actually help you. Completing one build gets milestone prizes back into your account sooner, and that often means extra dice you can push straight into the next tournament cycle. That little boost matters more than people think. You'll also get a clearer read on which partner is pulling their weight and which one might need a nudge before the event gets deep. Why the grind is still worth it The main reason people go hard in these events is simple: the full clear reward is stacked. If your team finishes all four landmarks, you're looking at 5,000 dice, a guaranteed 5-star sticker pack, and limited cosmetics that usually disappear once the event ends. That's a strong return for five days of focused play. It's still a grind, no question, and the wheel can be cruel at the worst time. Even so, good planning makes a huge difference, and a lot of regular players keep tools like RSVSR on their radar for game-item support while they prep for heavy events like this, especially when every roll and reward starts to matter a bit more than usual.
