It's the Stig's Digital Cousin! Here's your chance to try and beat him with Forza Motorsport 5...

 

The Xbox One Super V8 is, if you're unaware, a bit of a beast. Set to compete at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this Sunday, this Hulk-green slice of Aussie muscle is seriously bonkers: 640bhp from a 5.0-litre V8, to give a 0-60mph time of 3.3 seconds and top speed of185mph.

 

It'll be raced by Britain's three-time WTCC champ Andy Priaulx and two-time DTM winner Mattias Ekstrom, but there's one other driver who you'll be able to race against. But he's not The Stig. He's The Stig's Digital Cousin.

 

Yes, Internet, making his debut in Forza Motorsport 5 is the virtual version of our tame racing driver - though this one's slightly different. He - or it - is allegedly beatable. But only if you're really good. That means you lucky folks who plan on snapping up the shiny new Xbox One and Forza 5 next month will be among the planet's first to take him on.

 

As you know, Forza 5 will feature the Top Gear test track, rendered in meticulous detail, including the follow-through and Gambon sections. Though the ramshackle shed where we store all of our crisps might not have made the cut.

 

Still, you'll have in-game commentary from Jeremy, Richard and James on the career modes, and races inspired by Top Gear events, amongst other things.

"You're going to see the AI doing things you've never seen it do in a racing game. This is true emergent behavior," Greenwalt added. "There are over 400 people on our team who have been working on this game for over three years – this is a well thought-through idea."

 

Unfortunately, as wonderful as all that sounds, it's a feature whose impact is hard to quantify in two hours of play. It took almost an hour to complete enough races to even establish my own Drivatar profile and I wasn't able to log out, let my Drivatar race and come back to see what prizes it had earned. Regardless, the concept of racing against my virtual friends' Drivatar equivalent for comparison's sake is an alluring concept.

 

I did find my time with Forza was interesting, however, in that I could also augment Drivatar behavior at a local level. There are a few different presets: If you want racers to be forgiving, you can turn on the easiest difficulty mode but take a penalty against all in-game experience earned; beefing up the difficulty above normal nets greater experience, but opponents will be more aggressive.

 

Changing any of these parameters would cause a moment where the game re-synced with the cloud, proving that at least it was pulling data from a server somewhere. I found the difference in difficulty levels was evident: I dominated the easy Drivatars and spent a lot of time in last place against the most difficult Drivatars, who were good at fending me off and blocking open lanes during crowded race segments.

 

So at least in this way the system was able to prove itself, but overall I just didn't have enough of a baseline for Drivatar to get any indication on how it'll perform in the final version of Forza 5.

UPDATE: Dan Greenawalt, director of Turn 10, called to talk about this. He said that Forza 2, which launched 18 months after XBOX 360 launched, had 12 tracks and 270 cars, with a lot a variants. So Forza 5 already has more cars and tracks than Forza 2, which is one of their highest rated games.P

 

Fans deserve the best content, so they rebuilt the cars from the ground up. They started with nothing, so nothing was "cut." They feel this will give a great experience to the next gen gamer. Look at it like GT3 to GT4, which added content on the same console.
