Overview Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a sci-fi first person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft on April 30, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 (via PlayStation Network), and on May 1, 2013 for both the Xbox 360 (via Xbox Live Arcade) and PC (via Steam). Although it is considered a standalone expansion to 2012's Far Cry 3 (and shares much of the original's gameplay mechanics), Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon features a new, unique setting inspired by sci-fi action movies of the 1980s.
Set in a retro-futuristic dystopian 2007, players are put into the role of Sgt. Rex "Power" Colt, a Mark-IV cyber-commando (with the voice and likeness of Michael Biehn, famous as Sgt. Kyle Reese of The Terminator and Cpl. Dwayne Hicks of Aliens) in a "near future" North America ravaged by nuclear war (in which "the apocalypse has had an apocalypse"), as he is sent on a mission (along with fellow cyber-soldier Spider) to an undisclosed island to fight an enemy cyborg army (known as Omega Force) and track down a rogue agent (his former commander, Colonel Sloan).
The game's soundtrack (reminiscent of 80s electronic music) was composed by the Australian electronic music duo Power Glove.
Gameplay The gameplay of the gameplay is a somewhat streamlined version of that found in Far Cry 3. For example, the skill tree system of Far Cry 3 has been replaced with a levelling system that automatically unlocks the next benefit upon levelling up. The crafting system also is completely removed from the game.
Aside from that the gameplay is much the same as Far Cry 3 in that the game is an open world first person shooter. Players are equipped with an assortment of futuristic weaponry and in addition to the main story missions there are side quests which include liberating garrisons, killing rare animals, saving hostages and collecting a range of different collectibles.
Story Set in the dystopian future of 2007 the world is suffering due to a nuclear war between Russia and the United States of America. An American colonel, Colonel Sloan, on a mysterious, unnamed island has reportedly gone rogue to which the US government responds by send two elite cybernetic super-soldiers (Sergeant Rex "Power" Colt & T.T. "Spider" Brown) to investigate the situation. When the two arrive at the island and confront Colonel Sloan he admits to his betrayal and new plans before killing Spider and knocking Rex unconscious. The Colonel's plans are revealed to be that he intends to revert the to a prehistoric-like state using his rockets, armed with the blood of the "blood dragons" which inhabit the island.
Shortly after being taken captive, Rex is awoken by one of Colonel Sloan's scientists, Dr. Elizabeth Veronica Darling, who seeing the error in the Colonel's ways betrays him and decides to assist Rex on his mission to stop and eliminate Colonel Sloan. After carrying out various missions to combat the Colonel's forces, Rex fights one of Solan's key scientists, Dr. Carlyle, who has discover a means of transforming humans into zombie-like creatures ("running dead") using the blood of the blood dragons. As the two battle, Dr. Carlyle is ultimately killed by his own AI creation which having been mistreated for far too long gains revenge against the doctor.
Rex then travels into a parallel dimension to battle against hordes of Colonel Solan's running dead army to test his might and prove his worthiness. His reward for defeating the waves of zombies is the Killistar, an arm-mounted laser gun which gives Rex the power necessary to defeat the Colonel. Upon returning to the real world, Rex enters into a training montage after which he has sex with Dr. Daring which culminates in Rex's abduction by the Colonel the following morning.
Assaulting the Colonel's base, Rex confronts Sloan but finds himself unable to attack the Colonel due to Sloan programming Rex not to harm him. Utilising his memories of Dr. Daring and friend Spider, Rex is able to overpower his cybernetic nature with his humanity and impales Sloan with his robotic hand before killing him with the Killstar. Dr. Daring immediately appears after the Colonel's death and the two embrace before destroying the base and stopping the Colonel's evil goals. As they look on at the destruction of the base however Daring turns to the camera with a sinister glare and purple glowing eyes.
