I can say that with every new generation of hardware the capabilities of the hardware increases. But up to this point it’s always been very much of a vertical evolution – of course, you expect things like visual fidelity, audio, frame rate. New features such as 3D capability, etc, etc. These things are a given. They come with the new hardware.

 

But what I’m really more interested in is other ways of expanding into the next generation – a more horizontal expansion, where you’re going to be doing things online, more of a social aspect. People will be able to interact with the game through various devices, through various media – such as tablets, smart phones, etc.

 

He then added that gameplay experiences like this could find their way into future Metal Gear titles:

 

 

I think it’s this new type of interaction – this new way of interacting with the game world – that’s more exciting to me. And I want to bring the Metal Gear franchise into that new wider world of interaction.

Unreal Engine 4 now available for PS4

 

Epic Games has announced that its Unreal Engine 4 is now available for the PlayStation 4. The company says it “is providing the resources PlayStation 4 developers need to harness the full power of its Unreal Engine 4 technology and realize all facets of their creativity using Epic’s revolutionary new toolset now and in the future.”

 

Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic, commented on the news:

 

“Being on the ground floor of Sony Computer Entertainment’s Tools and Middleware program is part of our long-term commitment to Unreal Engine 4 developers, and we’re excited to help teams ship fantastic new games for PlayStation 4. Unreal Engine 4 has been built from the ground up to take full advantage of high-end next-generation hardware capabilities.”

Nvidia today announced support for Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation 4 with the popular Nvidia PhysX and Nvidia APEX software development kits.

 

Game designers use PhysX and APEX technologies for collision detection and simulation of rigid bodies, clothing, fluids, particle systems and more across a wide range of platforms, including desktop PCs, game consoles, and mobile and handheld devices.

 

Nvidia PhysX technology is the world's most pervasive physics solution for designing real-time, real-world effects into interactive entertainment titles. The PhysX development environment gives developers unprecedented control over the look of their final in-game interactivity.

 

Taking PhysX technology content creation to the next level, Nvidia APEX technology lets artists create intricate physics-enabled environments. They can expand the quantity and visual quality of destructible objects; make smoke and other particle-based fluids integral to game play; and create life-like clothing that interacts with the character's body to achieve more realism in their games.

 

"Great physics technology is essential for delivering a better gaming experience and multiplatform support is critical for developers," said Mike Skolones, product manager for PhysX at Nvidia. "With PhysX and APEX support for PlayStation 4, customers can look forward to better games."

Heh, matyt nvidijos neikvepe ivykis su "tuninguotais" laros plaukais (tressfx technologija) naujajame tomb raideryje, kur nvidia videoplokstes turi labai daug problemu (tiek performance kritimo, tiek stabilumo), todel nusprende, kad geriau jau tegul physx geriau sukasi ant priesininku hw, nei kitu fiziniu varikliuku plitimas ir kruvos suderinamumo problemu su pc platforma ir geforce gaminiais.

Vienas įtalų auto gamintojas įdėjo Facebook albumą pavadinimu "Scansione Per Gran Turismo PS4". Vėliau albumas pervadintas ir paskui išvis ištrintas. Nors prieš tai SCEE exec'as per interviu netyčia pasakė, kad GT6 bus šiais metais išleistas ant PS3. Dabar viskas išvis susimaišė.

A set of photos on a Facebook page of a car manufacturer showing vehicles being scanned for inclusion in Gran Turismo might have inadvertently leaked a PS4 version of the game.

 

The Facebook photo album (in Italian) says: "Scansione Per Gran Turismo PS4" taken at the LM Gianetti manufacturer base.

 

Of course, the photos could be for a PS3 iteration of the game and the album may simply be mislabelled, or it could be some sort of mix-up or hoax - but it does seem to suggest Polyphony Digital is currently working on vehicles for a Gran Turismo game on Sony's next-gen PS4 console.

 

UPDATE: The photo album in question has now been changed to 'Scanning Gran Turismo', which is a lot less giveaway.

 

UPDATE 2: The album is now gone entirely. Very suspect. Watch this space.

Primal Carnage: Genesis announced for PlayStation 4

At some point, everyone has wondered about what it was like to walk among the dinosaurs. We were wondering that for ourselves not too long ago, so we set out to develop Primal Carnage: Genesis. What better way is there to realise that dream than by harnessing a new generation of PlayStation hardware to drive an incredible immersive experience?

 

From towering behemoths like the brachiosaurus and the tyrannosaurus rex, to smaller creatures like the raptor and the dilophosaurus, there is no doubt that there is something magical about them. In order to capture that magic in real time, we used Unreal Engine 4 as our software platform of choice.

 

As the gameplay itself will feature a mix of linear gameplay and open world exploration from a first person human perspective, next-generation rendering is key to selling the lush island environment and suspending the disbelief that these dinosaurs aren’t actually, well, real.

In the early stages of development, it became clear that we wanted Primal Carnage: Genesis to champion an immersive story driven experience. How do we tell that story? We looked into several different storytelling methods and happened upon the episodic approach. It was a difficult decision for us, given the relative newness of episodic storytelling.

 

Ultimately, the episodic method ended up being the clear victor due to the versatile nature of creating a story episode by episode. It allows us a lot of wiggle room, one very unique advantage of the episodic model is the ability for player feedback from the first episode to affect the development of the following episodes. Do players want to see more of a certain mechanic? Maybe people didn’t like playing a certain segment of the game, thus steering our focus elsewhere.

New PS4 hardware, controller, PS Eye, UI details from Sony’s GDC presentation

 

Sony is currently hosting a presentation at the Game Developers Conference to cover new aspects about the PlayStation 4. Among the topics discussed include the system’s hardware, controller, Remote Play, and UI. Speaking of UI, Sony confirmed that the PSN friend limit has been raised – something that will likely please PS3 owners.

 

IGN’s Greg Miller is on-hand for the event and has been live-tweeting tidbits from the presentation. We’ve gathered up what’s been shared below.

 

- Targeted to be the “central device in the living room”

- “Core gamers are our primary audience

- PS4 build around them, salable to the outsiders

- 5 core PS4 principles: Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated, Personalized

- PS4 CPU: 64-bit x86 arch, low power consumption, low heat, 8 cores, 8 HW threads, 2MiB L2 cache per 4 core group, 32kib l1 I/D-cache

- PlayStation Shader Language, very similar to HLSL, allows featured BEYOND Direct X 11 and OpenGL 4.0

- “GPU – Tessellation – adding geometric detail to smooth edges or create more organic shapes”

- PS4 RAM – 8GB 256 bit GDDR5 (GDDR5 is very high end graphics memory only found on PC graphics cards)

- Will come with “very large hard drive in every console”

- PS4 Dev Environment – Windows 7-bit, tools are fully integrated into Visual Studio 2010 and 2012

- “Debug your PS4 code as you would your PC code”

- PS4 Controller: Start/Select buttons are now “Options.” New System button is “Share.”

- Speaker, headset hack and “extension port” on the PS4 controller

- PS4 controller buttons are going back to digital over analog because no one used it on PS3

- PS4 controller L2/R2 – Curved design to get rid of the accidental netflix fast forwarding

- PS4 controller: 1920×900 resolution on the analog touchpad

- PS4 controller colors are the Player Numbers: 1-Blue, 2-Red, 3-Green, 4-Pink (Like the buttons)

- PS4 will charge controllers when it’s off. Unlike the PS3.

- PS4 controller light bar can be used for muzzle flashes, health bars, etc

- “The #PS4 Eye will enhance the PS4 user experience.” High sensitivity dual color cameras – 1280×800, 12 bits/pixel, 60Hz

- Dedicated port for the #PS4 camera, exclusive SCE Connector. Means it won’t use a USB port on the console, but won’t plug into your PC.

- Cam suggested uses: walkthrough vids, taunting in killcam, login, speech recognition, etc; possible PS4 Camera Magic – Sees the controller, you guys move, splitscreen moves to be on the right side

- The above is what devs could do (not mandatory)

- Zoom into the controller, tilt to shake little dudes inside, push into our world like EyePet

- 2004: XMB, 2011: LiveArea, 2013: New #PS4 one based on the five principles from earlier

- UI is meant to give you at a glance info without loading the game. See what new DLC is out and whatnot. What friends are saying.

- Have to enable people seeing your real name on the #PS4. Auto-enabled if you import from another social network. (Can be turned off)

- PSN friend limit raised

- PS4 Mock-up: Heavy Rain choice with the number of your friends that chose each option.

- All the PS4 streaming and sharing: that’s on the hardware. Devs don’t have to do anything special to their game.

- PS4 Remote Play: Screens are mirrored on PS4/Vita (Both on at same time). Hardware does it/not on devs. Start at any time; no special mode.

“I think Sony is really in to win this one. I’m good friends with a lot of guys at Microsoft, I’m under their NDA flag, and Microsoft definitely has a different outlook than Sony does. Sony, like they say ‘Yeah, PlayStation 3 wasn’t what we wanted it to be in comparison in the “arms” race.’

“So now they’re going hard, man. It’s pretty cool, on all points. I think that it will be really interesting to see what Xbox fires back with. It’ll be an awesome E3. Sony is just like, ‘GO! GO! GO! Let’s make this hardcore! Let’s get all these devs in and let’s make it as good as we can.’”
