Watch Dogs is just one of a few cross-generational projects confirmed for the PlayStation 4. Along with Sony’s new console, the open-world title will be arriving on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

 

Just how will Watch Dogs leverage the new power provided by the PlayStation 4 hardware? Creative director Jonathan Morin explained to GamesTM this month that players can expect visuals and AI improvements as well as “more realistic consequences to your actions”.

 

“When the PS4 showed up it did bring new possibilities to improve graphics and every AI systems we have. But in the same way we did for four years already, we will continue to look beyond what is possible to achieve in order to bring this little something extra out there for players to enjoy. So expect more AI behaviors, more realistic consequences to your actions and an overall improvement in visuals realization. Our team has been working on this very complex ecosystem for more than four years now; this is what is required to build such an intricate set of AI systems.”

 

Morin additionally told the magazine that the PS4 will offer enhanced processing power and memory, but it presents exciting new challenges such as “the time and the quality of the resources” needed to take advantage of the improved specs.

 

“What the new machine brings is new processing power and memory to run these things, but the biggest investment is always the time and the quality of the resources required to pull it off. So not only does the next generation bring more possibilities, but it also brings new challenges that we believe are extremely exciting from both a player’s and a developer’s perspective.”

 

One final note from Morin: he said that “Both the E3 demo and the PS4 conference demo were played in real-time.”

CLICK: One big question I have is about the level of interactivity - to date we’ve seen plenty of gameplay but with no hands on, it’s hard to tell how linear the levels are. How free are you to choose which devices you interact with?

 

DG: Imagine you need to take down an adversary within the city like in our E3 demo last year. The player crafts a plan: maybe he wishes to tail the AI using security cameras and take him out when he does not expect it. Maybe hack into traffic lights to cause a car crash to trap his target. Maybe he wishes to hack his phone to attract him to a specific spot to shoot him from cover.

 

With the level of dynamism of the game, the reactivity of our world and Aiden’s abilities to hack the city, you can create your own plans to deal with the game’s objectives.

 

Now, as you execute your plan, so many things can happen. For example, a citizen could spot your weapon and call the cops, who in turn will arrive on the scene to intervene. Maybe a panicked driver passing by rushed into a gas station. Maybe the enemy decides to fight back, or calls for help. Alternatively he could flee, which could then lead into a car chase. Different things will happen to different players.

 

Basically, it’s those unique moments that you know are not happening because a designer decided, scripted, they should happen. They are happening because the game reacts to you as a gamer, to your plans, to your use of Aiden’s ability to control the city, invade the privacy of its citizen, shoot, get physical and drive.

 

CLICK: So for example, are some actions context-based? Like throwing up traffic barriers or creating a spark to distract someone you’re pursuing. Do they only happen in certain situations?

 

DB: We want to fully support the player’s expression in our game. Our basic philosophy is to respect the player’s “play style” and not impose a single way of playing. It’s the player’s game, not ours.

 

Most of the time, the player can choose whichever strategic option he wants, be it completely stealth, all guns blazing or the third option, more WATCH_DOGS, to use technology.

 

Why do I say most of the time? Because we still want to have strong narrative moments that will create unique situations, those will “encourage” a specific way of playing. For example, an ambush by the game’s enemies will encourage gun play. But even then, we always want the player to have some technological tools available to create a unique WATCH_DOGS feeling!

CLICK: We’ve seen Aiden getting around on top of a train and a suggestion he can also drive cars. Is that something you’re still waiting to fully reveal?

 

DG: In the demo we showed Aiden hacking into the train system and stopping a train in its tracks. He then started it back through his hacking. You could argue that with such access he does not need to drive! In response to your question, yes Aiden will have the ability to drive vehicles. We’ll be revealing more details on that in the months to come.

 

CLICK: In terms of mechanics, can you hack any time or will there be a cool down period?

 

DB: Hacking is based on multiple factors depending on its strength. Some hacks are easy and have no cost at all, invading security cameras is a good example of this. The ones that have a stronger impact on the world will drain Aiden’s battery, like causing mayhem with a traffic light accident. These hacks can cause serious damage and are not infinite. The depleted battery will recharge over time so the player will be able to reuse his abilities soon after. Some others will require special “components” that must be found in the world. Generally, these effects are the most potent so the player needs to use them with care.

CLICK: We’ve seen some parkour action, is that available at all times?

 

DB: Absolutely! The navigation system has always been a pillar of the game, we always wanted it to feel very natural and be easy to use for the player. We even started building it before the shooting! In a city simulation like WATCH_DOGS, it was important to make the character climb or vault obstacles efficiently and react naturally to any event as he navigates within the world.

 

Some gameplays, like our foot chases, are based on the fact that the player can make smart navigation choices to gain time and be more efficient. Likewise, the character will also react naturally to dangerous events around him like bullet impacts and explosions. This really makes the character “live” in the world while feeling very cinematographic.

 

CLICK: Can you comment on the length of the campaign?

 

DG: While I will not give a specific amount of play time now, I can tell you that it is very big. It is already a challenge to play through it from start to finish on a regular basis. And as mentioned before, the player’s choices will drastically change the moment to moment of the game. The way you approach a challenge can be very direct, while another can use a sophisticated plan, so play time varies greatly. Even though we are used to creating large games at Ubisoft Montreal, WATCH_DOGS is setting a new bar. But beyond length, we wish to offer depth: a game that rewards experimentation, creativity and improvisation.

Watch Dogs is coming to PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC and next generation consoles in Q.4 2013.

UPDATE: Ubisoft has confirmed that the exclusive content will also be available in the PS4 version.

 

ORIGINAL STORY: The PlayStation 3 version of Watch Dogs will include 60 minutes worth of exclusive content unavailable on other platforms.

 

The bonus content was revealed via the game's updated box art, which was released alongside details of Watch Dogs' four special editions earlier today.

 

It's unknown what the exclusive content will consist of, however.

 

Ubisoft has regularly offered exclusive content with the PS3 versions of its multi-format games.

    • Suprantu tavo ironija, bet tikrai galiu pasakyti pasižiūrėjus ar man patinka ką matau ar ne. Palygink su Witcher IV anons treileriu ir viskas bus aišku.

Žiūrėti filmą ir žaisti yra pramoga, bet visgi nėra tapatus dalykai. Aš žaidžiu tik tuos žaidimus, kurie man TIKRAI patinka, nes tai reikalauja laisvo laiko, kurio su amžiumi (iki tam tikros ribos) darosi vis mažaiu. Todėl aš labai smarkia pasirenku kam man skirti tą laisvaaikio laiką. Nepatikėsi, bet dar per kelis metus nesu paleidęs ne vieno PS+ gaunamų žaidimų, nes ko man reika praktiškai viską nusiperku. T. p. turiu ir gan nemenka fizinių movie diskų kolekcija tais pačiais sumetimais. Nežinau gal tai amžius, gal old school, bet aš nenoriu tik įjungti TV su įmontuotu Gamepasu ir kažką tai streamingu pažaist. Noriu turėti fizinę konsole, nupirkta žaidimą (nebūtinai fizinį diską), bet mano asmenynę licenciją. Kažakaip taip.
