While you are waiting for the Motorola Droid Bionic to come on the market, you might want to hear some juicy infos about an upcoming super Android phone from Motorola. Codenamed Dinara, this next super handset could have a release date by the end of the year.

According to Droid Life's sources, the Dinara will have a form factor that will ressemble with the much awaited and delayed Droid Bionic. If we were to believe the rumors, it is expected to have an "HD" touchscreen, an impressive 13MP rear camera completed by a secondary VGA front facing one and an internal/non-removable battery.

Powered by the current Android 2.3 Gingergread, it will also include a TI processor, 1GB RAM, bigger screen than the Droid Bionic and will be available via the Big Red, Verizon. The unofficial infos say that it will be out by this winter, with no precise date mentioned.

Probably wondering what Dinara means? It is the name of a mountain situated near the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most likely that it will be just the codename, if we thing about other Moto's handsets that have had interesting when debuting: Olympus, Etna or Everest.

If you were wondering what other LG Android phones are coming on the market by the end of this year, here is some new infos. The folks over at Pocket Now have details about three new LG devices to be released soon: LG Gelato, Prada K2 and the Victor.

After starting the year with an impressive trio of Android smartphones such as Optimus 2X, Black and 4D, now more devices are expected to come out. The first one, LG Gelato, features a 3.2-inch display, 3MP camera on the back, 800MHz processor plus the NFC support. It will probably come to Sprint as the LS685.

The next one is the classy, slim and fashionable LG Prada K2. Featuring a dual-core processor, it will include a large 4.3-inch NOVA touchscreen, an 8 megapixel rear camera plus a front facing 1.3MP one and powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. A Holiday release date is expected.

The last Android phone to make its appearance is the LG Victor. With a smaller 3.8-inch OLED display than the Prada K2, it includes 1GHz single-core processor, a 5MP camera on the back plus a VGA front-facing one. It could be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well.

No prices infos were given, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear more. Interested about one of these three devices? Maybe the fancy Prada K2?

Mozilla is working on a Android-based mobile OS

Just when you thought we did not need another mobile OS, Mozilla is gearing up with their Boot to Gecko (B2G) mobile platform.

B2G aims to clean up mobile fragmentation with an open-sourced standards-based web technologies OS. It appears to be in the beginning stages, but they plan on publishing source code as its developed so devs can add to it and help them out.

What makes B2G interesting is that Mozilla is building it by taking the Android code that lets it work on hardware, and adding a UI pulled from Firefox’s cross-platform layout engine Gecko. This appears to be like any other Android phone with HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz, but Mozilla said they won’t be adopting the Java language used in Android, nor will they support native code programming.

Last September, Mozilla showed of a prototype cellphone dubbed the Seabird. It has an 8MP camera, two pico-projectors, and inductive wireless charging. We could see something like this in the near future with B2G. You have to check out the video after the break because this could be the coolest phone on Earth someday.

HTC Now Willing To Negotiate With Apple On Patent Disputes

Nuotrauka

It wouldn’t be a normal day around here without some legal/patent news to bring to you, so here we are with the battle between Apple and HTC. You may remember almost a month ago when the U.S International Trade Commission found Apple guilty of violating two S3 Graphics patents related to compression technology and only a week later when HTC announced they would be purchasing S3 Graphics (and a handful of their patents in the process) for a cool $600 million dollars. Then, on July 15th, Apple had themselves a win when the U.S. ITC ruled in favor of Apple, declaring HTC was guilty of infringing on 2 of Apple’s 10 patents related to data-detection and data transmission technologies.

Now, let’s fast forward to today where Bloomberg is reporting that even though both rulings are still subject to review, HTC is now willing to to enter talks with Apple over all this he-said, she-said patent dispute drama. In a telephone interview with Winston Yung, HTC’s chief financial officer said:

"We have to sit down and figure it out. We’re open to having discussions. We are open to all sorts of solutions, as long as the solution and the terms are fair and reasonable. On and off we’ve had discussions with Apple, even before the initial determination came out."

Let’s just hope the results of these talks are quick and doesn’t end up with HTC paying Apple the same $5 per handset they’re already forking over to Microsoft. I’d really hate to see Apple getting rich because Android.

This Sony Xperia news has slowly moved up to where we are today. Starting off with the disappointing news that the X10 will not be receiving a Gingerbread update. Then last week the news by way of a full press release from Sony Ericsson stating that the Sony Xperia X10 will indeed get updated to Gingerbread in August.

Well, here it is July 27th and as displayed in the graphic above, “Android 2.3 for the Xperia X10 is here”. Let us all rejoice!

Take note the following prior to updating:

User data, such as contacts, messages and more, saved in your phone memory will be overwritten. User data saved on the phone’s memory card is not affected.

DRM content will be overwritten.

The Backup and Restore app will be overwritten and cannot be used to restore data. Check out Android Market for alternative apps to back up and restore your data, such as MyBackup.

The Creatouch, Neoreader and Quadrapop apps will be removed.

Mediascape, homescreen operator customization and app tray operator customization will no longer be supported.

Moxier Exchange will be replaced by Android 2.3 Gingerbread Exchange support.

Also remember, as mentioned in the press release we referenced last week, this update applies to all unbranded X10’s. So if you have the AT&T version of this Sony device, you will have to wait a bit longer.

We first told you about the HTC Puccini in May, and it passed through the FCC last week, so where are the pictures? Well we have a couple to share with you. The only thing left is to get confirmation of the specs, pricing, and a release date. What we do know is that it will be HTC’s first 10-inch tablet, have an 8MP camera, dual-LED Flash, and the above picture confirms support for a stylus (like the HTC Flyer).

There are rumors that it will have a Qualcomm dual-core 1.5GHz processor, Android Honeycomb, HTC Sense and a 4G radio. We will certainly let you know more as soon as we hear it.

Nielsen: Android is top operating system in U.S.

Nuotrauka

Does this come as a surprise for you? Probably not. Once again Android find itself in the top of the list for smartphone platform in the United States. Nielsen's latest scores situate Google's OS in the first position with 39% of the market, followed by Apple's iOS with 28%.

Clearly, the fight is between these two giants: Apple and Google. According to Nielsen's market share data, RIM Blackberry gets 20% of the market, while Windows Mobile and WP 7 combined have gained merely 7%. The last two places are ocuppyied by HP's webOS/Palm and Symbian OS with just 2% share.

If Android leads as the top rating OS in the US, Apple is top manufacturer, as the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system. As it can be seen in the chart below, HTC devices have reached 14% of Android markert, followed by Motorola with 11% and Samsung with 8%.

HTC revenues up 104% and promises Apple lawsuit will not have a fundamental impact on the company

Nuotrauka

HTC said today that the lawsuit against Apple will not have a fundamental impact on the company, and they are preparing an appeal for the recent decision that they infringed two of Apple’s patents.

“Many lawsuits nowadays are results of being successful; it’s part of the business,” said HTC CEO Peter Chou in a telephone conference with investors. “We will not bring the company to a dangerous position.”

The HTC and Apple fight has been ongoing for sometime now and a lot of people are fed up. We had one rant here, and you can also read up about how HTC might be fighting back with the purchase of S3 Graphics. Overall the patents that Apple is suing for seem very broad as we reported last week.

In other news, HTC announced second quarter earnings and things are still going well for the Taiwanese company. Revenues were up 104% year-over-year to NT$12.4 billion ($4.3 billion) and up 19% from the first quarter. They shipped 12.1 million devices during the second quarter which was up 24% year-over-year and 25% from the second quarter. So far, this year they have sold 21.8 million units as opposed to 8.7 million units for the first half of 2010. That is an increase of 250%.

Samsung comes up short as Apple becomes the Number One smartphone vendor in Q2 2011

Nuotrauka

On Monday, we reported that Samsung moved ahead of Nokia, and possibly Apple, as the top smartphone vendor through quarter 2, 2011. At that time, Samsung’s final numbers were not in, but Strategy Analytics just released them, and it appears Samsung came up a little short. Samsung was estimated to sell between 18 and 21 million units, but the actual was 19.2 million.

For now, Apple is crowned the champion, but I believe it is short-lived. The Galaxy S II is doing very well, and I expect Samsung to be the number one vendor by the end of year. This won’t be easy based on the fact that the iPhone 5 might launch in late quarter 3. Either way, it is unlikely Nokia will be making a comeback anytime soon.

Finally we’re getting somewhere! A bit more information on the status of the 3rd generation Google device, the Nexus Prime. As it stands, this will be Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich also know as Android 4.0 to hit the shelves. Korea’s IT related newspaper The Electronic Times, has recently reported that we could see the Nexus Prime in October. Electronic Times reported confirmation of the Nexus Prime debuting in October along with a little more information. The device will sport a 4.5-inch 1280×720 pixels, Super AMOLED HD display, and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor running the phone.

So will we see this next Android phone in the Nexus line by October? Well Android chief Andy Rubin tells us something different. He recently made some comments earlier in the week. According to him, we should expect to see it during the holiday season or just before.

We have this strategy where we have this Nexus program, and we have this lead device strategy. That strategy has worked quite well to help focus the team.

What we do is that we select each — around Christmastime of each year — we select a manufacturer that we work very closely with to release a device in that time frame. That includes, also, semiconductor companies and all of the components that go in the device.

Essentially the teams huddle together in one building. They jointly work in these development efforts — they go on for nine to 12 months. And ultimately at the holiday season, or right before it, devices pop out that are based on this effort.

Redagavo Starscream

Nexus Prime will be manufactured by Samsung, according to Cease & Desist email

Nuotrauka

Apparently, firmware for the Nexus Prime has gotten out into the wild and Samsung doesn’t play when it comes to such matters. This Cease & Desist email is floating around the Internet right now in which the Samsung’s legal team confirms that company will indeed be the manufacturer of the Nexus Prime. If it’s real then speculation about manufacturers is out the window and we can instead focus on what’s inside! Being Samsung made it’s got to have a Super AMOLED HD screen, but what else? Maybe we’ll see Samsung’s dual core Exynos processor. Unfortunately we don’t have any documentation leaked about a release date, but rumors point toward October. Click on the pic above to blow it up and read it for yourself. Don’t forget to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Ice Cream Sandwich gets a two-minute tour, courtesy of a lucky eBay shopper (video)

By Brad Molen posted Sep 28th 2011 5:23PM

Breaking News

The one Android update to rule them all -- better known as Ice Cream Sandwich -- is penciled in for an official launch sometime in the next two months, so it's only natural for some shots to leak out. We just weren't expecting a two-minute video showing off a few of the new features. As the story goes, a lucky gent ordered a Samsung Nexus S on eBay and, upon its arrival, noticed that his new prized possession looked a little... different. Hopping over to the About screen, he was shocked to discover that the device was running ICS. The firmware appears to be operating on the same baseband as the screenshots leaked a few weeks ago, but it's running on an updated build (IRK48) and kernel (3.0.1).

We can see plenty of influence from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb here, as well as four shortcuts on the bottom (a definite bump from the two found on vanilla 2.3). There's a new Google Apps icon which opens up a tray containing a number of featured services put out by the search giant, and long-pressing the home button brings up a vertical Honeycomb-style multitasking menu. The notification bar, camera UI and other menus also have a much different look. Granted, all of this could just be a custom ROM built to emulate the latest Google dessert, so we can't be a full hundred percent certain that it's authentic. If it's not, at least we can give credit for it being incredibly elaborate.

Check it out! The invitation above is turning up in the inboxes of “First-to-knowers” everywhere. The Google Samsung event originally planned for Oct. 11 was postponed, as we know, in respect to the passing of Steve Jobs. Since then the new date has been completely up in the air. Finally we have a definitive and official date of Oct. 19th in Hong Kong. This is without a doubt the unveiling of Ice Cream Sandwich, folks. Notice the trouble they went through to add the ICS logo to the invitation? And Of course Sammy is still coming so I’m sure we’ll see the next Nexus there too. The event begins at 10:00 AM in Hong Kong, so if you’re here in the States like I am, tune your browser to youtube.com/android at 10PM EST on Oct 18th for the live broadcast. Who’s ready?

Yay! reikes pasiziuret kada mano laiku bus.
