Why Sony chose to sit on this one, we have no idea, but the company just revealed that its software update for the 2011 lineup of Xperia phones -- which was released last month -- also adds browser support for WebGL. This means that if you're holding an Xperia Arc, Mini, Neo, Play, Ray... or any other of its most recent handsets, then there's a good chance you're wielding one of the first Android phones to support this modern graphics platform. Designed to bring advanced visuals and gaming to the web, the API holds roots in JavaScript and has been used to develop everything from Angry Birds to far-out music videos. Sony Ericsson first previewed its WebGL efforts back in February, and after all these months, its official arrival is a welcome one, indeed.

Android 4.0.1 x86 released and optimized for AMD Brazos APU

ka tai reiskia. ogi tai kad ne tik nauji tabletai gales isnaudot AMD cipu GPU galimybes su Android, bet reiskia kad Android 4.0.1 veiks ir and kitu x86 pc. kad ir notebook mazu.

Chih-Wei Huang, from the Android-x86 project, just released an innocuous and understated message on the Google Groups page for the project. He says,

“Hi all,

The ics-x86 branch based on Android 4.0.1 is ready.”

Android Ice Cream Sandwich on AMD Brazos

AMD has been angling for years to break into the mobile and low-power market, and they’ve succeeded in a small way with their Fusion initiative, which is an APU (a combined CPU + GPU on a single chip) that uses far less power than a traditional desktop processor such as Intel Core or AMD FX (read more about what an APU is here). So far, the current generation of APU (the platform is codenamed “Brazos” and includes the APU, chipset, and motherboard) has found some success in the small notebook and home theater PC space. Those under $500, small laptops you’re seeing at retail outlets like Best Buy and Micro Center by HP and others are using Brazos to provide very capable little laptops that get good battery life and deliver high-def graphics inexpensively.

Those APUs, however, use the x86 instruction set. This is an instruction set that’s been around since 1978 and underlies every single desktop PC running Windows, as well as Mac OS and many flavors of Linux as well. It is, to say the least, extremely standard.

Android, by contrast, runs traditionally on ARM architecture chips, which are used in the vast majority of smartphones and tablets. That’s why you don’t see Android running on desktop PCs or laptops, and you don’t see Windows running on smartphones.

This announcement by Huang changes the entire game by introducing the latest version of Android to the instruction set that standard computers run on—and optimizing it for AMD rather than Intel. Android 4.0.1 does run on all x86 processors, but his announcement indicates that hardware acceleration is running and optimized for AMD’s Fusion APUs, rather than ‘we’ve been working closely with Google‘ Intel.

The ghost of ATI strikes back

The key for AMD here is that their purchase of GPU company ATI in 2006 continues to pay off dividends; now Android 4.0.1 is hardware accelerated on RADEON GPUs, which makes it a no-brainer for developers to use as a reference platform for early apps and hardware. Why optimize for Intel when Intel doesn’t have an equivalent GPU/CPU hybrid, especially when the support is built in to 4.0.1 right now?

Former AMD CEO Dirk Meyer was allegedly sacked for not steering the company to a tablet and smartphone strategy. While this doesn’t necessarily mean a marketing strategy or victory on AMD’s part, Dirk’s probably laughing right now, because it just fell into their lap: Windows 8, and now Android 4, are ready to run on hardware AMD can ship in volume today.

AMD is bungling a lot of things lately, but their meal ticket may very well be their extremely strong GPU technology and its related elements, e.g. Fusion. This sort of happy accident doesn’t happen often, and it’s very likely that this wasn’t through any effort of AMD engineering or marketing. More likely is the scenario in which developers want to write for the best platform, and for now, Brazos is looking like it.

Sony Ericsson 'Xperia Arc HD' sighted in Hong Kong

Nuotrauka

It's been just over a month since we got our first glimpse of Sony Ericsson's next big thing, the Xperia Arc HD (previously known by its codename, "Nozomi"). Today a new photo has emerged of the device, which is reportedly going through carrier testing in Hong Kong. Despite sections of the phone being strategically blurred out, you can clearly see that the Xperia UI has undergone a bit of a facelift, and that the chassis seems to be incredibly thin, just like its predecessors. Some mystery still surrounds the purpose of the glowing section at the bottom of the device though -- as we've seen in the earlier shots, it seems to extend all the way around the shell.

Chinese blog Techorz, the source of the leak, claims an unveiling at CES in early January is on the cards, which wouldn't surprise us considering that's where we first saw the original Arc almost a year ago. As for rumored specs, the site reports exactly what we've heard elsewhere -- a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU inside, with 1GB of RAM, a 4.3-inch, 720p display and a whopping 12MP camera, presumably sporting Sony's Exmor R tech. Crucially, though, there's no mention of which version of Android is powering the Arc HD at present. Last time we saw it, it was rocking Android 2.3.5, though if it does launch with Gingerbread we'd expect a relatively speedy upgrade to ICS.

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) comes to GSM / UMTS Nexus S starting today

Nuotrauka

You heard right -- Google itself has just affirmed on its own social networking branch that Android 4.0 will begin to hit GSM / UMTS (sorry, Sprint users!) Nexus S devices over the coming month, with the luckiest few to get it today. Outside of that, there's no more specific time table to be had, but if you're able to suck it down in the coming hours, definitely sound off on the improvements in comments below.

VIA today announced official Android support for their range of x86 embedded products, starting with the EITX-3002 motherboard.

It’s clear that VIA are hoping the addition of Android support will stimulate uptake of their embedded boards with its proven multimedia credentials and cost advantage over the Windows Embedded family. This move also places Android’s existing apps/resources on a platform with some serious CPU grunt, a plethora of I/O ports and VIA’s new Smart Embedded Tool Kit, enabling the simple monitoring/control of peripherals. The EITX-3002 itself is solid performer, an Em-ITX design (industrial form factor between Mini and Nano ITX in size). It’s powered by either a 1.2GHz Nano X2 or 1GHz Eden X2 CPU with a VX900H media system processor on the graphics front and runs silently in a fanless configuration.

Sprint LTE Galaxy Nexus patvirtinta jog turės 32GB vidinės atminties

Nuotrauka

Many of you seemed concerned over the Sprint Galaxy Nexus's storage capacity, which Sprint was reporting at just 16GB. Lucky news for those of you with large app or media collections, as Sprint has now confirmed that the figure it earlier posted was inaccurate.

Indeed, the Galaxy Nexus as it finds its way to Sprint will offer the phone's full 32GB capacity. Seeing as the phone has no microSD slot for storage expansion, making sure the phone has enough for your needs is an important pre-purchase consideration. Some of you were speculating when we were still wondering if the 16GB figure was accurate whether or not the decreased capacity might mean Samsung was finally adding such a microSD slot, after all. That would have been neat to see, if not a little unprecedented, but it's no longer something that seems in the cards.

Here's the SmartWatch. The spiritual successor to LiveView, the clippable watch detaches from the flexible watch strap. In fact, we've been told that the device can be transplanted to any watch strap. It's connected to Bluetooth through your phone -- acting as a notifier and music play as well as the capability to answer calls and check-up on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The capacitive touchscreen ably picked up our prods, although you'll need to tap the side-button to wake the display.

nauja Dropbox beta versija duoda iki 5gb free storage.. :P

Download Dropbox Beta For Android v2.0.9 With Automatic Uploads, Get Up To 5GB Of Storage For Free

The guys behind the official Dropbox Android app have an enticing present for everyone to check out. They just released an experimental beta v2.0.9 that includes a brand new automatic Camera Upload feature. There are definitely third party apps out there that offer this same service, but it's nice to see the official version updating with some fresh new features.

Here's what you'll find:

* The app can now automatically upload photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or your data plan.

* No more size limit. So upload to your hearts content.

* If there are network issues, the upload will resume when those issues are resolved.

* Some performance improvements and bug fixes.

* You'll also get 500MB of free space on your first automatic photo upload.

If you allow automatic uploads via your data plan, there is a setting to limit the file size to 25MB (files over this limit will wait for Wi-Fi) or set it to unlimited.

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to add and configure multiple sources and destinations like you can with DropSync, so there is definitely still some room for improvement.

But wait, that's not all! During the beta period you can rack up some more free storage. The first sync gives you an instant 500MB bump, and for every 500MB of photos and videos you upload automatically, you'll receive an additional 500MB of free storage, up to 4.5 more gigabytes. That's 5GB just to help test out the new Dropbox, all for free.

I should also mention that this free space isn't separate from any free space you may have earned from the desktop client beta they announced yesterday.
