Hard Reset

We like being the first to tell you about a game. It’s rare, though, that we announce something that’s a mere two months away. Flying Wild Hog, a new studio, is releasing its debut game this September. It’s called Hard Reset, and it’s a PC-exclusive “dark sci-fi” FPS. Roughly, it’s Blade Runner, The Matrix, and Painkiller rolled into a single-player-only flour tortilla.

Like some kind of Polish, game-developing Voltron, Flying Wild Hog was formed from members of People Can Fly (Painkiller), CD Projekt RED (The Witcher 2), and City Interactive (Sniper: Ghost Warrior). Read on for more details, the first trailer, and first screenshots.

Pre-emptively asked questions:
What’s the engine?

Proprietary, impressively enough. It’s called “Road Hog.” And because a built-from-scratch engine is a serious investment, we’ll probably see more games on it from the developer.
What’s the plot?

Hostile robot takeover. Only one human city remains–the bastion of Bezoar. It’s here that Major Fletcher, your character (the guy with the laser eye patch), takes to arms against the robot hordes.
When, and how much?

September 2011. Pricing isn’t announced, though we’d suspect it’ll fall somewhere between AAA releases like Battlefield 3 and lighter-weight “downloadable” FPSes.

Flying Wild Hog dropped that gameplay trailer on Friday in an interview with GameSpot, in which the gang explains why they focused solely on singleplayer: "If you want to show some amazing graphics, it's better and easier to develop the game for PCs," FWH's Michal Szustak said. "Also, in the era of movie-like shooters almost "on rails," with player-environment interaction as limited as possible, we wanted to create a game for old-school PC players, raised on all those forgotten Dooms, Quakes, and Painkillers."

 

Szustak says that multiplayer could have been a check-in-the-box add-on but it would have meant making a game that is inferior to other multiplayer shooters instead of something distinct. It's also a good bet that eschewing online multiplayer and a console release is a big reason it can be delivered so quickly.

the game hits Steam on September 13. Can your PC handle it?

 

The rapid-fire rollercoaster of Hard Reset's PR campaign is winding down as Flying Wild Hog winds up to pitch the game up on Steam for $29.99 (with an additional 10 percent off for customers that preorder) next month. Hard Reset: Extended Edition coming to the PC in March 9th

Kalypso Media and Flying Wild Hog today released a gameplay trailer for Hard Reset: Extended Edition, the action-packed FPS slated for a March 2012 release. The new trailer focuses on some of the game’s white-knuckle action that challenges players to blast their way through seemingly endless waves of deadly cybernetic foes in a futuristic landscape. Hard Reset: Extended Edition contains hours of new content, including huge new boss battles, new enemies and new campaign levels. Kalypso Media will release Hard Reset: Extended Edition for Windows PC in UK retail on 9th March, 2012.

And the wait is finally over everyone. Flying Wild Hog has just announced that Hard Reset: Exile is available on Steam. Exile is a free expansion to Hard Reset that contains all the extra content of Hard Reset’s Extended Edition.

In Hard Reset: Exile, players will follow Major Fletcher into the Barrens – dangerous lands beyond the last human city of Bezoar, where our hero will meet new foes and make new friends.

Hard Reset: Exile features four new creature types, a new boss monster, five new campaign levels with a total of about three additional hours playing time as well as two new levels for the survival mode and an improved graphics engine.

Hard Reset: Exile continues the original story.
