Wii U

Peterio Mooro pamastymai
Newly appointed EA COO Peter Moore has publicly backed Nintendo's vision of the future, the Wii U.

Speaking to IndustryGamers, Moore palmed aside chatter of Wii U being a transitional platform and downplayed the importance of better graphics for the next generation of consoles.

"People will start talking about it being a transitional platform. And I don't think that's going to be the case," said Moore.

"And here's why: the [tablet] controller [is huge]. This is not about specs any more... This is about, as it was with the Wii, is the controller a unique way of enjoying a game experience, regardless of what the graphic fidelity is?"

"Look, you saw Battlefield - how much better could this stuff look at some point? There's a point of diminishing returns... I don't even know if there's anything better than 1080p.

"In the early days of our industry, this stuff was absolutely about how much better the games looked - shinier helmets, greener grass – but I've been around long enough to know that seeing your breath in a football game is a huge deal. But that's no longer the case any more."

Nintendo's job, Moore said, is to "build a better moustrap with regards to the way that we use the controller".

"So I don't know what Xbox and PlayStation's plans for their next platforms are," Moore added, "but it's not going to be hanging on graphic fidelity. I guarantee you that."

What will be "critically important" for Nintendo, Moore believes, is online - an area the Wii left unfulfilled.

"We are relieved, if anything else, that [Nintendo] have made a huge commitment that they have presented to us," said Moore.

"Online certainly was not a factor with the Wii, as you know; although they had capabilities, it just wasn't there at the level that both Xbox Live and PlayStation had.

"But Nintendo totally gets that multi-player, building community, co-op play, having the ability to bring games that are deeper - all of these things are now very important."

What those online capabilities will be, Nintendo is keeping very close to its chest. Moore's understudy, Andrew Wilson, told Eurogamer in July that EA Sports was working closely with Nintendo to figure the online support out.

Peter Moore was recently promoted from president of EA Sports to chief operating officer at EA.

Nintendo could reveal Wii U details before the expected show-all at E3 2012 in June, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has hinted.

"We will be sharing information throughout the year," Fils-Aime told Spike TV at CES 2012 this week.

"So I won't say you'll have to wait until E3, but certainly we're not breaking new news here."

Nintendo has openly targeted E3 2012 - 5th-7th June - as a destination for new Wii U details.

The new console is physically present at CES this week, but only in its old "not final" form. The demo's being shown are those we saw last year at E3, too.

Fils-Aime explained that Nintendo still wasn't ready to fill in the key blanks - namely a launch date, pricing and launch titles.

The Wii U will launch in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan by the end of 2012, Nintendo has promised.

Following the release of its third quarter 2012 financial results, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told reporters in Japan today the Wii successor will hit key markets for the year end.

Nintendo had stated Wii U, set for a re-reveal at E3 2012 in June, would launch no earlier than April 2012 but before the end of the year - but did not specify the territory in which this would happen.

Now we know Nintendo will launch the console on these shores in time for Christmas.

Nintendo unveiled the Wii U at E3 2011, but key features, such as specifications and launch games, remain unknown.

Dev kits are in the hands of developers tasked with creating games for the system. Studios are under strict orders from Nintendo not to divulge specifications - still in flux - to press, although it is thought the Wii U will be powerful enough to produce visuals on a par with the best games on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Meanwhile, Iwata said Nintendo hopes to return to profitability next year - it expects to make a huge loss for the financial year ending 31st March 2012. The continual release of major titles for the Nintendo 3DS and "other measures" will help the Japanese company do this, Iwata said.

Nintendo is happy to avoid getting bogged down in an expensive tech race against its rivals with the Wii U, so says CEO Satoru Iwata.

Speaking during an investor Q&A last week, Iwata suggested that, although its new console will offer some titles featuring high-end visuals, the company plans to compete in other areas instead.

"As we will showcase the Wii U at E3 in June this year, the detailed announcements must wait until then, but we are aiming to make a system which shall not be forced into competing with the others where the contenders can fight only with massive developer resources and long development times as their weapons," he said.

Iwata added that Nintendo has always adopted a 'size isn't everything' approach to software development, and that will continue with the Wii U.

"Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop.

"It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion.

"When you look at Nintendo's software, extraordinary rich graphics, massive gameplay volume and astonishing rendition effects are not necessarily the appealing point. It is, in fact, important for us that our games are appealing in other ways as well."

He offered Nintendo's quirky Rhythm Heaven series as an example, insisting that, "if we had adopted rich photo-realistic graphics, it would have lost much of its appeal."

"It is not necessary for us to deploy a huge number of people in order to develop such games," he continued, stating that, more than ever, Nintendo is bringing in third parties when it does need to develop more graphically complex titles.

"When we need massive power and have a lack of internal resources, we collaborate with outside resources and pour necessary resources to where they are needed. We are increasing the frequency of working with outside developers where Mr. Miyamoto and our internal developers alone used to develop.

"What's important here is not to narrow down what we can do," he added. "Rather, we have to create the dynamic range of appeals that the consumers can appreciate."

Iwata pointed to The Legend of Zelda series as one franchise that will certainly benefit from the the Wii U's additional horsepower.

"As I mentioned, it is true that, in some software areas, we need to be engaged in the power games," he reaffirmed.

"Take The Legend of Zelda franchise, for example, the fans must be looking for the graphic representations that they do not see as cheap at all when the title is released for the Wii U. When it is necessary, we do not hesitate to role out our resources."

As confirmed last week, the Wii U will be on shelves before the end of the year. Neither Microsoft or Sony has made any official comment as to when their new systems will hit the market.

Wii U less powerful than PS3, Xbox 360, developers say

Sources say that Nintendo's new console is not even equal to the current generation

Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console may generate full HD graphics, but it's not up to the graphics power of the Xbox 360 or the PS3, according to developers familiar with the hardware who spoke on a condition of anonymity to GamesIndustry International.

"No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360," said one developer who's been working with the Wii U. What does that mean? "The graphics are just not as powerful," reiterated the source.

This developer is not alone in their opinion. Another developer at a major company confirmed this point of view. "Yeah, that's true. It doesn't produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360," said the source. "There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."
