New Trojan Confirmed for Apple's Mac OS X

Security analysts at Sophos report that a new "backdoor Trojan" has been written by hackers that specifically takes aim at Apple's Mac OS X operating system. According to Chester Wisniewski of Naked Security - the popular IT security blog - the trojan in question makes remote operations and password "phishing" relatively simple.

As even the malware itself admits, it is not yet finished, but it could be indicative of more underground programmers taking note of Apple's increasing market share.
SophosLabs says the trojan is a "variant" of a longstanding Remote Access Trojan (RAT) for Windows known as "darkComet." In this particular instance, however, the individual behind the Trojan refers to it as the "BlackHole RAT." For now, Sophos is calling it OSX/MusMinim-A, or "MusMinim." It reportedly includes both German and English in the user interface.

Sophos says that the potentially nefarious functions served by MusMinim include placing text files on one's desktop, delivering operation commands like restart or shutdown, running arbitrary shell commands, displaying fraudulent "Administrator Password" windows for phishing purposes, displaying a full screen window that forces reboot for closure, and more.

While this instance certainly doesn't mark the first known trojan written for Macs, it also won't mark the last - especially since Apple continues to capture a larger and perpetually-increasing chunk of the PC market. Mac OS X 10.6.7 Now Available

Apple just released Mac OS X 10.6.7. The new version is available now in Software Update (or through the direct links below) and weighs at around 300 MB. The new build includes a series of fixes for Back to my Mac, SMB servers and the new MacBook Pros.

The 10.6.7 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

Improve the reliability of Back to My Mac

Resolve an issue when transferring files to certain SMB servers

Address various minor Mac App Store bugs

Apple Rolls Out Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2

On Wednesday, Apple rolled out the second developer preview of its next-generation operating system - Mac OS X Lion, which is scheduled to launch this summer and expected to be a central focus of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (June 6th-10th) in San Francisco.

Despite initial reports to the contrary, this next beta version of Mac OS X Lion is not a Gold Master. The Developer Preview 2 (build number 11A419) is now available to registered Mac OS X devs. Any developer looking to obtain this latest release must visit developer.apple.com and submit a formal request for a redemption code.

We are already hearing that Apple has refreshed the iCal interface to more closely resemble that of the iPad. This makes some degree of sense given that Apple is already teasing Lion as a veritable fusion between “the power of OS X and The magic of iPad.”

Nonetheless, the update is much too fresh for any depth of insight into what revisions and tweaks were made, though it's a safe bet that Apple promptly tackled the many bugs that the dev community was incredibly vocal about when the last preview release was issued. In February, Apple made the very surprising move to formally invite security and software experts to rip Mac OS X 10.7 apart in search of any potential and hard to find security weaknesses.

Apple Releases Lion Developer Preview Update

Apple has released an update to Mac OS X Lion Preview 2.

The Lion Developer Preview Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2

Developers testing the upcoming version of Mac OS X can install the update by selecting Software Update from the Apple menu.

Apple has not provided any information on changes made.

Apple Releases Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 3

On Friday evening, Apple seeded Mac OS X Lion developer preview 3, and today we're hearing about some of the nifty little tweaks and enhancements that have been unearthed so far. Of course, if you haven't already downloaded yours, there's a possibility that you may not be able to so at this time.

Some of the developers we know say the update effectively disappeared from Software Update on machines running March 30th's release of Lion Developer Preview 2. We started hearing this just hours after the release came. And while we had hoped for more information regarding the matter today, few additional details regarding the stalled download process have become available.

More than a few developers have reported problems with the beta - specifically, that it supposedly rendered their systems unable to reboot. It's important to reiterate, however, that there's no confirmation of this problem and certainly not by Apple. These are some of the things we're hearing and reading from developers.

Those who did obtain Lion Developer Preview 3 have reported some obvious and noteworthy changes, including a new boot animation and other aesthetically enhanced graphics and themes. There's also new and improved desktop wallpapers, and - as expected - the Reading List is now enabled in Safari."

Other changes include:

• New Reminders menu in iCal
• New next desktop button in Dashboard space:
• New options when right-clicking (this appears to be buggy at this time):
• Compatibility to external displays has been improved (especially in Mission Control)
• There is now a Mission Control app
• Finder’s toolbar has been slightly updated

Apple will officially unveil and preview Mac OS X 10.7 Lion at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference beginning June 6th.
