iOS 5 to Bring Android-Like Gesture-based Lockscreen to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch?

Apple is working on a new gesture based lockscreen, which will work similarly to the dots screen pattern found on Android devices.



Currently, iOS users have to slide-in and enter a password (if enabled) in order to unlock the lockscreen on device. But if these screenshots, courtesy of 9to5Mac are anything to go by, Apple might introduce (possibly with iOS 5) this new gesture based lockscreen, where you will have to connect 9 dots in some custom specified way to unlock your phone.





Currently, this new lockscreen is said to be in use internally at Apple by employees for testing.

Apple Plans Free And Revamped MobileMe Integrated With iOS 5 For April

MobileMe is probably one of the most widely used cloud services to keep your emails, contacts and calendar in sync on all your devices. Earlier we reported that Apple is going to unveil iOS 5 and MobileMe revamp in April. The reason why Apple will be unveiling the two together in a single event is that they are probably deeply integrated. How? we don’t know for sure but iOS 5 is expected to bring in a lot of cloud features.



We now have another source that backs the claim of the revamped MobileMe April launch which sort of confirms the early April event. Folks at iLounge report that the new revamped version will come free. Reported to them by a source who works in an educational institute, the new version is going to be free online cloud based "locker" for keeping photos, videos and music. Source claims, the school’s supplier has said that the current version of MobileMe is no longer available and anyone who needs to sign up shall opt for the 60-day trial. This will cover the gap till the launch of new version.

Apple will support existing version for an year, this suggests that the new version is going to be a lot more different and the support for older version is kept for those who recently paid for their yearly subscription.

Improved Voice Command Reportedly Coming with iOS 5

On the heels of Apple's confirmation that the future of its iOS will be on display at the WWDC, which commences this year on June 6th at San Francisco's Moscone West, there is rampant speculation about what the refreshed operating system will serve up. On Tuesday, sources close to the development of iOS 5 say Apple is aiming to drastically improve upon voice commands.

Last year, through the acquisition of Siri, Apple gained access to groundbreaking technologies so intelligent that, if implemented via iDevices, could make our favorite Apple products like the iPhone vastly "smarter" than any previous model. Siri, after all, has pioneered applications that enable users to deliver voice commands that prompt the app to do the research or other legwork required to complete a particular task.

The use of Siri’s artificial intelligence and assistance technology is said to be deeply integrated into the OS for all the different services offered.

Given the supposed robust slate of improvements planned for iOS 5, the new operating system may be demoed in June but not actually released until fall. Sources speaking on a basis of anonymity with Tech Crunch on Friday revealed that iOS 5 will definitely not be released during summer. Among the major tweaks coming with iOS 5 are cloud-based features for online storage of music, photos and video.

While many are already speculating the iPhone 5 will debut at the same time as iOS 5 in fall, at this time there is really no concrete evidence to otherwise suggest that Apple will stray from tradition and not release the 5th generation iPhone in June at WWDC.

Apple and Verizon to deliver over-the-air iOS updates to Verizon iPhone

Apple has long used the proxy of iTunes to push updates to its iOS devices: when a new software update is available, users need to plug their device in via USB, click update, and the new software version is downloaded and installed.

Smartphone competitors have long offered a different, more direct method for software updates that happens over-the-air. Specifically, when an update to Google’s Android operating system or HP/Palm’s webOS is released, users are provided an update notification and can update the software right on their phone. No computer required.

Now, Apple wants to provide the same convenience to their iPhone users and is preparing to provide over-the-air iOS updates, starting this fall.

Multiple sources say the new feature will debut in iOS 5, meaning iOS 5 will not come over-the-air but following point updates to it will. Just like tethering in iOS 3, Apple has the technology but cannot just unleash it everywhere. Apple and Verizon Wireless are said to have been in talks over these wireless software updates since early this year. Sources could not comment on whether or not Apple is negotiating similar deals with AT&T or international iPhone carriers.

The iOS-based AppleTV has been able to update itself without iTunes intervention so the hooks are obviously in iOS. Two things to note:

• Updates are now over 600MB. Apple would have to make these smaller to get the carriers to agree to push these things as they are. We believe that Apple will make the updates much smaller by using incremental patches rather than full OS downloads
• iTunes provides the backup to the iOS device so a failed update would need some sort of backup. We think there will be a Cloud-based backup system.

Obviously, if this is a feature in iOS 5, it should conceivably make its way to iPad and iPod touches as well. That means iTunes may no longer be a needed conduit for updating iOS devices in the future. It would also mean that the iPad could finally be a stand alone device.

Apple Executive Tells US Senate that iOS 5 will Encrypt Location Tracking Cache

Heavyweights from Apple, Google, and other tech giants showed up on Capitol Hill today for some grilling before a panel of US lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law. Members of Congress are looking to probe potential privacy and security threats born of the location tracking attributes of some of today's most popular mobile operating systems, including Apple's iOS.

"I am sorry that not everyone was able to get into the room," Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., who chairs the new subcommittee, said upon the start of the hearing, where Apple vice president for software technology Bud Tribble testified. According to Tribble, not only did Apple begin the process of remedying its tracking "bug" by reducing the location tracking cache in iOS 4.3.3, but the company - as widely expected - will fully encrypt the cache with a subsequent update.

"Apple is deeply committed to protecting the privacy of our customers," said Tribble. "Apple does not track users' locations -- Apple has never done so and has no plans to do so." Tribble's reassuring comments came after a strong opening statement by Senator Franken, who clearly set the stage for what the hearing had hoped to accomplish.

"Consumers have a fundamental right to know what data is being collected about them," Franken said. "They have a right to decide whether they want to share that information, and with whom they want to share it and when. And yet reports suggest that the information on our mobile devices is not being protected in the way that it should be."

Alan Davidson, Google's director of public policy, wasn't spared from the third-degree either. In written testimony prepared ahead of today's hearing, Davidson said: "Google recognizes the particular privacy concerns that come with the collection and storage of location information. That's why we don't collect any location information -- any at all -- through our location services on Android devices unless the user specifically chooses to share this information with Google."

iPhone 3GS owner should be disappointed, it looks like that Apple is going to abandon iPhone 3GS, Eldar Murtazin the edito-in-chief of Mobile-Review reported that iPhone 3GS won't be upgradable to iOS 5.x, and it will be available only for latest iOS devices and of course Apple's new-generations.

Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.

When Apple released iOS 4 in summer 2010, for example, the company made sure it could run on the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4. It was only with the first beta of iOS 4.3 (seeded in January) that Apple dropped support for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd gen — older devices the software team at Cupertino thought wouldn’t be capable of running the latest versions of iOS anymore. And again, Apple “unofficially” confirmed they were dropping support for the original 2007 iPhone in 2010, when Steve Jobs replied to a customer email and said Apple wouldn’t update the original iPhone in the future. Indeed, the 2007 iPhone can’t run iOS 4.

Apple's iOS 5: all the details

We've now put together the full list of highlights from the WWDC presentation, which you'll find after the break. iOS 5 will be made available this fall, with compatibility promised for the iPhone 4 and 3GS, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation.

• Firstly, stats. Scott notes that Apple has so far sold 200 million iOS devices, with more than 25 million of those being iPads. There have been 14 billion downloads from the App Store, tallying over $2.5 billion paid out in revenue to app developers. The iTunes Store isn't doing badly, either, with 15 billion songs sold.
• And the first new feature: an overhaul of notifications. At last! A new Notification Center aggregates all your, well, notifications into one and is accessible by swiping down a menu from the top of the screen. Yes, just like Android. Small X buttons alongside each note allow you to dismiss it, though there's no "clear all" option for the more decisive among us. Notifications are also making their way onto the lockscreen, where swiping across a text message takes you right into it. A little something like Samsung's TouchWiz implementation.
• Newsstand is a new place to house all your magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
• Twitter integration is also coming to iOS 5, with a single sign-in allowing a multitude of apps to make use of your Twitter credentials. That includes the Camera and Photos programs, finally letting you tweet images out directly from your galleries.
• Safari Reader is a new browser feature that will strip out distractions and present the text of a webpage with no other excess content. Accessible via a button next to the address bar. Also added to the iOS browser is a Reading List, which does what the name suggests by accumulating a list of pages you want to read later. Accessible on multiple devices. Tabbed browsing is making a debut in v5.0 as well, which is sure to be a boon for iPad users.
• Reminders is another self-descriptive feature. This one's intelligent enough to remind you to do things based on your location. It'll sync across devices and with your calendar.
• Yay, there's now a camera button right on your lockscreen! The volume-up button is also doubling up as a physical shutter release key when you're in the camera app. Pinch-to-zoom is said to be available right in the app, while holding your finger down on a particular area will lock down exposure to optimize the shot for its particular lighting. Some new in-device editing options have also been added, including cropping, rotation, red-eye reduction, and a one-click enhance option.
• A new split keyboard has also been shown off in iOS 5.
• Headline feature: PC Free! No more cables required for syncing. Now we're talking. Setting up and activating a new iOS device can be done right on the device itself, and syncing will be wireless too -- there'll be no need to tether to a computer anymore. Over-the-air updates are also part of the new deal, and in better news still, they'll contain only the data that's changed, meaning you won't have to re-download the entire OS every time Apple opts to make a minor tweak.
• Another pretty significant novelty: iMessage. It's a messaging service exclusively for iOS users (irrespective of which device they're rocking), which comes with delivery and read receipts, an indicator for when the other party is typing, and the ability to push messages to all your devices. Kinda, sorta like BBM. You'll be able to send messages, photos, videos, and contacts. Group messaging will also be available. It works over either WiFi or 3G and looks to be making good use of Apple's new push notifications.
• Perhaps the biggest innovation of all in iOS 5, however, will be the way iCloud affects the use of your mobile device. Hit up our overview post of the company's new cloud-syncing solution to learn all about it.
• iOS 5 will ship in the fall to the following devices: iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation.
