Apple has just made its second-generation iPad official! It features a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip and, finally, cameras, both front and rear! The new CPU is said to be up to twice as fast, with graphics performance up to nine times better than on the original iPad, while power requirements have been kept the same. Battery life is, consequently, unaltered, with Apple promising 10 hours. Pricing, too, has been left unchanged, starting at $499. The new tablet will come with an HDMI output capable of 1080p -- which will set you back $39 for the requisite dongle -- but we've yet to hear any rumblings of Thunderbolt connectivity. There's an enlarged speaker grille on the back, as expected, though resolution has not budged from the original iPad's 1024 x 768.

720p video recording at 30fps will be on tap from the rear-facing camera, which can also do a 5x digital zoom if you're into that kind of thing, whereas the front-facing imager will record at a more modest VGA resolution, also at 30fps.

There's a new cover for the device, which is best defined by Steve Jobs himself: "We designed the case right along side the product. It's not a case -- it's a cover." Basically, it's a magnetic flap that protects the front and automatically wakes and puts the device to sleep according to whether it's open or closed. Guess we know what that proximity sensor was about now. These Smart Covers will cost $39 in plastic or $69 if you opt for leather.

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than its predecessor, at a mind-melting 8.8mm, and a little lighter at just over 600g, while chromatic options have been expanded: you'll get a choice between white and black. It'll be available on both AT&T and Verizon, and all variants start shipping on March 11th. Apple Retail Stores will start sales at the unusual hour of 5PM, which will probably make online pre-orders the fastest way to get yours.

In terms of new software, Apple's launching iOS 4.3 alongside the new iPad and bringing with it much improved Safari performance as well as FaceTime, Photo Booth, iMovie and GarageBand (the latter two costing $4.99 a piece) apps specifically for the newly camera-enriched iPad. Personal Hotspot capabilities are also arriving in the latest version of the OS, but they'll be exclusive to the iPhone 4, so you won't be able to share your 3G iPad's connection.

The front facing camera is only VGA quality and can record up to 30 frames per second with audio. VGA quality is only 640 x 480. The rear facing camera is slightly better but still Apple seems a bit evasive on the specs. The back camera can record video in 720p HD up to 30 frames per second with audio and can take still images with 5x digital zoom.

Exact resolution information for the cameras to do a megapixel to megapixel comparison between the iPad 2 and competing tablets may be intentionally omitted. But based on what’s been shown, its apparent that the Motorola Xoom’s 2MP front camera and 5MP back camera with dual LED flash has got the iPad 2 beat.

Following today’s iPad 2 announcement, Apple has unveiled a new iPad 2 Dock. Priced at $29, the Apple iPad 2 Dock includes a 30-pin Dock Connector port for charging and syncing the iPad as well as connecting other accessories such as the Apple Digital AV Adapter cable and iPad Camera Connection Kit. The Dock also provides a 3.5mm audio line-out port for connecting to powered speakers. The new Dock uses a slightly different design from the original iPad Dock with a small lip at the front. The package will include the Dock only, requiring users to use the cables included with the iPad 2 or purchase additional cables separately.

Nu ką, su iPad 2 pradės ir nauji priedai eit... :)

Firemint Announces Real Racing 2 HD with Enhanced Graphics for iPad 2

Nuotrauka

Just in time for some truly magical iPad 2 hands-on videos featuring games being played on the new device, developer Firemint has announced that the brand new version of award-winning game Real Racing HD will take advantage of the more powerful graphic capabilities offered by the iPad 2.

Firemint says they were not aware of the detailed specs of the iPad 2, but they had a fairly accurate idea that turned out to be good for what they’ve been building. That means gyroscopic controls, faster graphics, lighter form factor easier on gamers’ hands when holding the device.

Real Racing 2 HD has been significantly enhanced beyond what could work on existing devices, and our efforts have definitely given us a head start on iPad 2.

All these attributes combined with our enhancements to Real Racing 2 HD will create the most precise and intuitive car racing experience on any device. The 1080p HDMI output also opens up some great possibilities.

We can’t wait to see more developers jumping on board with great-looking games built specifically for the iPad 2. March 11 can’t come soon enough.

Ooojj tas iPad daug pakeis visko... :D

Does The iPad 2 Have 512 MB of RAM?

Nuotrauka

While Apple never provides exact information on the amount of RAM they manage to build into their mobile devices, speculation and teardowns in the past always offered good indication and proof of the specs of iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. We know the iPhone 4 has 512 MB of RAM (likely to jump up to 1 GB this summer with the iPhone 5) and the iPad 1 only featured 256 MB of memory. The iPad 2 was announced yesterday, and now the question is: how much RAM does the A5-powered new tablet have?

According to a Korean semiconductor analyst quoted by AppleInsider, the iPad 2 has double the RAM of its predecessor — 512 MB. The analyst apparently also revealed through a series of tweets that Apple is using LPDDR2 memory in the iPad, contrary to LPDDR1 from the original iPad.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities also told AppleInsider that the RAM in the iPad 2 would run at a higher clock speed of 1,066MHz for greater memory bandwidth than the 800MHz memory in the iPhone 4.

Kuo also indicated back in January that the iPad 2 would have LPDDR2 RAM at a speed of 1,066MHz, corroborating Lee’s more recent claims. Kuo said the memory would be supplied by both Samsung and Hynix.

Previous rumors pointed to the iPad 2 featuring 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM. Someone got it right eventually, but we think the most important achievement for Apple isn’t the amount of RAM or Ghz in the A5 — rather, we’d focus on the improved specs in a thinner design that yet haven’t compromised the battery life. That should be the most important thing in the consumer experience and, together with a faster and snappier device, what will make sure Apple sells millions of this thing this year, again.

Update: Softpedia also notes that the iMovie for iPad webpage should confirm the new device has 512 MB of RAM. In fact, the app won’t work on the iPad 1 but it already does on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G which, guess what, have 512 MB of RAM.

Best Buy Will Have iPad 2 at Launch

Nuotrauka

It looks like with the second-generation iPad Apple is really trying to replicate the distribution success of the first one. Indeed, Steve Jobs said yesterday that with a US launch on March 11 and a wider rollout in (at least) 26 more countries by March 25 this thing will be “everywhere”. But not just Apple retail stores, which helped getting the original iPad in the hands of millions of consumers last year.

Best Buy has already confirmed on their website they will have the iPad 2 at launch. 9to5mac speculates same will happen with Sam’s Club and Walmart — these are all current retailers of the iPad 1 and we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the iPad 2 being available again through their channels.

So now the question is: will you get a white or black iPad 2?

Investors, Wall Street React Favorably to Apple, iPad 2

Nuotrauka

Apple stock is once again trading higher Thursday, up more than $6 per share to $358 at noon CST. The bounce is being widely attributed to a combination of factors, certainly not the least of which are the introduction of the iPad 2 and the return (even for just one day) of Apple CEO Steve Jobs who proved to be his "old self" during Wednesday's live media event in San Francisco.

The general consensus among Wall Street analysts appears to suggest that Apple's second generation tablet, complete with everything from dual-core processors to Smart Covers puts Apple in a strong position to remain not only the leader among today's tablet makers, but also the dominant force that will largely run the table of the burgeoning tablet industry for the foreseeable future.

On Thursday, George Shiffler, research director at Gartner told the Wall Street Journal that one of the primary reasons Apple shares are poised to move higher is the total impact Apple products - chiefly the iPad - are having on the computing world. "Consumer demand for Apple Inc.'s iPad and other tablet computers is sapping demand for traditional laptop computers," the WSJ reports. As a result, Gartner Inc. is among many Wall Street research and investment names to reduce its forecast for global computer shipments. "We expect growing consumer enthusiasm for mobile PC alternatives, such as the iPad and other media tablets, to dramatically slow home mobile PC sales, especially in mature markets," Shiffler says.

"Apple": "iPad 2" pristatytas, tačiau rekomenduojame laukti "iPad 3"?

San Fransiske (Kalifornija, JAV) oficialiai pristatytas antrasis populiaraus planšetinio kompiuterio "iPad" modelis.

"Neturėkite pernelyg didelių vilčių "iPad 2" atžvilgiu", - "Apple" darbuotojo žodžius cituoja internetinis portalas "Cult of Mac". "Projektuodami šį gaminį, inžinieriai susidūrė su įvairiomis problemomis, todėl būtent "iPad 3" turėtų tapti nauju kertiniu gaminiu", pridedama anoniminis "Apple" darbuotojas. Taip pat internete daugėja nuomonių, jog "iPad 3" taip pat pasižymės iš esmės patobulintu dizainu ir konstrukcija. Ar šie gandai pasitvirtins, turėtų paaiškėti dar šiais metais.

Year of iPad 3? 2012

There were a flood of rumors recently about an improved iPad 3 with Retina screen debuting during the typical iPod Fall release timeframe. From the way Apple repeated over and over that 2011 was the year of the iPad 2, it seems pretty clear that we’re probably going to have to wait until 2012 to see an iPad 3.

Now a bigger iPod? That’s something else entirely.

Apple to Produce 10-12 Million iPad 2s in 2Q11?

Apple's target to take delivery of 40 million iPads from Taiwan suppliers in 2011 remains unchanged with shipment volume expected to top 6-6.5 million units, including over three million iPad 2 models, in the first quarter and to further expand to 10-12 million units in the second.

After producing 1.7-2 million units of the first-generation iPad in January, Apple began to phase out production of the old model in February, while beginning to roll out the iPad 2, according to component suppliers in Taiwan. Shipments of iPad 2 are expected to top 2-3 million units in March, the sources added.

With a shipment ratio of 4:6 for the first and second halves, shipments of iPad 2 are likely to reach 21.5-24 million units in the second half of the year, the sources estimated.

iPad 2: Apple’s Smart Iteration

Nuotrauka

By now you’ve probably heard and read everything you need to know about the iPad 2. The second generation tablet that’s thinner, lighter (not so much, after all), has cameras and also happens to come with fancy (some people say revolutionary) Smart Covers to protect and clean your device without putting it entirely into a case. Pretty much as I wrote in November, this is the iPad upgrade I was expecting.

But is this the iPad 2 I was hoping for? Or rather, was March 2 the iPad 2 event I was looking forward to? I would say yes, and no.

I’m going to get an iPad 2 from the United States on March 11. 16 GB WiFi model with a $39 Smart Cover. I guess that’s what most consumers will end up with, and I’m happy to stick with my last year’s choice of “just” 16 GBs of storage considering how it’s possible that Apple will slowly move to cloud storage, always available at any time with a simple Internet connection. Which brings me to the second point: the geek in me was hoping for a brief mention of iOS 5 at the iPad 2 event which, you might have seen, didn’t happen. I can see, though, why Apple decided to keep iOS 5 for a dedicated event in Cupertino.

Unlike most people have done on the Internet these days, I can’t judge the iPad 2 without having touched one. Sure it is thinner and it’s got tapered edges, but can I say whether or not it will feel comfortable with my hands when reading in Instapaper? No, and I don’t even want to start building theories upon this speculation. But I think that it will be just fine. Most of all — and here comes the trick Apple played to demonstrate the top-notch quality of its engineering team — the iPad 2 is thinner than an iPhone 4. This feature will have a strong grip on the average consumer’s mind, and on top of that it leads us to think that the iPhone 5 will be thinner than the iPad 2 in a few months. If that’s not an iterative process started in 2007, then I don’t know what else it might be.

See, this is the key point. Some people, many people, are going to despise the iPad 2 profoundly and quickly dismiss is as the same iPad with cheap cameras and thinner design. But from a consumer’s perspective — the consumers that generate Apple’s numbers — having the chance to upgrade to an iPad that’s thinner than a phone and can do video calling for free is going to be a big deal. Was this possible 10 years ago? No. And would have this been possible if Apple’s focus was on raw specs, and not on an iterative process that’s aimed at releasing better products year after year, at the cost of looking awfully similar to each other? Again, no. The cost of similarity I mention — the risk of having a 2011 iPad 2 that doesn’t improve “greatly” over the 2010 iPad 1 — is actually Apple’s best played card: they don’t shoot for specs. They shoot for getting better over time. And you don’t make a better iPad by just putting 2 GB of RAM and 10 MP cameras in it.

We could discuss for hours about the low quality, iPod touch-like cameras in the iPad 2 or the fact that it didn’t get a Retina Display and RAM is likely “only” 512 MB. Does it really matter? For many of us, obsessed with details and numbers, yes. We all want to be experts in this technology sphere without even knowing how RAM is really made. But that’s fine: we’re geeks and we want the best tech. But instead of looking at the iPad as a piece of aluminum and glass that runs software, I want to look at this device like my dad would. Or my friends.

I am an average user, and I hear there is a new iPad out sometime next week. Damn, I got my iPad last year and there’s a new one already? These Apple guys are evil — I think — but I figure I could use a trip to the Apple Store with my friends next week to see what the fuss is all about. So I go to the Apple Store and wow — that thing is thin. And hey, it’s got cameras for HD video, photos and video calling. Oh, and the Apple Store guy tells me I can call my dad who has an iPhone, too. That’s neat. Plus, the Apple Store guy also tells me this new iPad allows me to make music with a new app and edit videos thanks to its “fast processor”. I don’t know what a processor exactly is, but I guess it means iPad 2 is powerful. I have some doubts about the battery though — I mean, if it’s thin and powerful it should last long. I don’t want to charge it all the time, so maybe I should just stick to my iPad 1 and give up on video calling and iMovie editing whatever. Wait: this guy brings me on Apple’s website and I see in spite of the new stuff, I still get 10 hours of battery life. You know what, Apple? Fine, you get my money. Now I want this thing.

Sometimes, when writing and speculating about Apple, we lose the grasp on reality: it’s people like my friends and your parents that buy Apple devices. Geeks make for great early adopters, but it’s the “average consumer” that keeps Apple rolling in the 11 months that follow a product launch. I’m not saying we shouldn’t criticize the iPad 2 for being a smaller upgrade than we originally thought: I’m saying perhaps is best for us to wait until we get our hands on it, and try to understand what consumers really see in Apple’s annual iterative process in the meantime.
