iPad 2 Completely Sold Out, Everywhere

 

The iPad 2, released on Friday, apparently sold out of every store in the United States by Saturday. That's what Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster learned from a survey he did of retailers across the country this weekend, and what's being confirmed by Deutsche Bank analysts this morning. Munster estimates something between 400,000 and 500,000 iPad 2s were sold this weekend, as compared to 300,000 original iPads sold on the opening weekend last year. Other analysts put the initial sales at closer to a million.

 

Munster's team called a number of retailers such as Apple stores, Target, Best Buy, and found no stock of iPad 2 anywhere they checked. They also walked up and down lines in New York City and Minneapolis and interviewed 236 would-be buyers to profile who was buying the new tablet. In addition to large sales to existing iPad owners, they found about 70 percent of people in those lines were getting their first tablet. 47% of them got a 3G model, and 41% bought the 32 GB iPad 2, an increase from the 32% who had gotten the 32 GB first-generation iPad, and that 64 GB models also sold better than before. This may have been driven by availability: Fortune reports that many Apple stores ran out of 16 GB iPads first, and 32 GB models. "iPads are sold out across virtually all channels," said Munster, adding that his team was "unable to find any availability." Munster now believes that sales could exceed his earlier prediction of 5.5 million iPad 2s in this quarter.

 

DeutscheBank did its own survey this morning, and found exactly zero iPad 2s at any of the 50 Apple retail stores, 20 Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores as well as AT&T and Verizon stores they called. The financial research firm Wedbush Securities, meanwhile, estimates even higher total sales than Munster. "We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad 2s in the opening weekend," said analyst Scott Sutherland.

iPad 2 Camera Examples & iMovie

 

The iPad 2 is outfitted with a pair of cameras that allow for intimate FaceTime and HD recording sessions, but how do these cameras rank on the still photo front? Several blogs have posted some pics already, but I wanted to do a few examples of my own (including a homemade movie) that really shows off what you can expect to do with your new tablet.

 

The iPad 2 doesn’t have the best cameras with a 0.7 megapixel rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front camera, but for what it’s worth you can take semi-decent photos with this thing. I know I haven’t exactly been quiet when it comes to wishing Apple could have at least spare a few more megapixels, but it is what it is. I haven’t been vocal about the Camera app yet though, which is essentially just a giant version of the iPhone or iPod touch’s Camera app. It didn’t occur to me at first, but Apple didn’t optimize the Camera app for the iPad.

 

With the same interface, you’ll have the same features available. You can switch between the front facing and rear cameras, tap to focus (although I’m not sure how much it helps), and you have 5x digital zoom which again doesn’t do the rear camera any justice.

 

Below I’ve included a series of photos starting at no zoom, and proceeding through roughly 25% increments. The pictures below are small, but you can click on them to get the full res shot (720 x 960).

 

 

 

 

 

What the iPad 2 camera really needs is a lot of light. While it tends to oversaturate (especially on a cloudy day), the photos come out much crisper and are pretty passable. By no means will the iPad 2 replace your point and shoot, but a sunny day at the beach (if you can tolerate screen glare) may yield surprising results. As you’ll see below, the pictures spit out of the rear camera aren’t bad.

 

 

 

On the topic of cameras, a lot of people don’t see the need to take pictures with their iPads. I think these people are crazy, or are missing a key point in the conversation. If you start to look at app trends like Instagram, Path, and Hipstamatic, you get a sense that people are taking photographs in the moment. Much like we blurt out thoughts on Twitter, our iPhones allow us to share photographs in the same way – a visual brain dump of what’s happening or what’s coming to mind right now. This might be individualized by filters, but it’s much in the same vein as we doctor our Tweets with Birdhouse before tapping the send button. I think the iPad and the iPod touch will not only get better cameras, but people will want to use them as cameras and camcorders in the pursuit of immediacy. Why take a picture with a point & shoot that requires a sync with iPhoto, when you can use your iPhone or iPad to immediately upload pics to the Internet?

 

Apple addressed the thinness and case complaints with the iPad 2. Next, they’ll address the camera complaints. People will want to use them.

 

We can’t talk about stills all day, so I wanted to share a quick video I made this morning that essentially shows off what you can expect with the iPad 2′s rear facing camera while recording video. Processed in iMovie to add music, titles, and a fade out, you’re getting a look at a real world example of what you can do as an amateur filmmaker.

 

 

720p videos don’t look too bad, although there is a little bit of grain in the morning light. With more light you might be able to reduce that, but I decided to try to capture what a typical indoor scenario might look like. I think you’ll have a lot of fun recording movies with your iPad, and while iMovie takes a little practice to learn, it’s definitely much easier to edit video on the iPad 2 than on the desktop.

 

The rear camera in the iPad 2 is certainly capable for video, but you’ll have varying results taking stills. Without light, I wouldn’t expect the average photo to come out terribly decent without a lot of fuzziness. But given the right opportunity, you could probably snap some quality stuff.

iFixit Finds 31 Magnets in iPad 2/Smart Cover Teardown

It turns out that the magnetic "Smart Covers" introduced in conjunction with the iPad 2 earlier this month are every bit as "magnetic" as they sound. Based on the not-so-surprising findings of the iFixit team, a teardown of the new iPad 2 Smart Cover reveals that 21 magnets are housed in the new accessory with another 10 corresponding magnets built into the iPad 2 itself.

Based on the teardown, iFixit found the Smart Cover has only one magnet that turns off the iPad 2's screen (although it should be noted that other magnetized tools can similarly activate on/off). The other 30 magnets are used to either clamp to the iPad on the right side or to establish the triangular shape needed to create a stand for the tablet. As expected, the alternating polarity of the magnets in the iPad 2 is "complemented by the opposite alternating polarity of the magnets in the Smart Cover," making certain that the revolutionary iPad cover always sits in the same orientation.

We were curious earlier why Apple decided to use so many magnets on the right side of the Smart Cover. They needed at least four to complement those in the iPad 2, but why the other ten? They used a steel-to-magnet bond (which is weaker than a magnet-to-magnet bond) to form the triangular stand, and so they needed lots more magnets to prevent the case from literally falling apart during use.

Although the iFixit crew is particularly adept and tearing down and reassembling no shortage of tech products and iDevices, the team points out (with tongue in cheek) that a disassembled Smart Cover has a "repairability score of zero."

Apple has announced they will delay the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan in light of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit the island last week, devastating large parts of the country.

“We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris.

Apple had originally planned to include Japan in the iPad 2 international rollout on March 25th and have yet to announce a rescheduled Japanese launch. This comes after iTunes began accepting relief donations and Apple Retail Japan provided shelter for victims of the tragedy.

7,200 iPad 2s Sold at Apple’s 5th Avenue NYC Store on Day 1

Although we won’t know for certain how many iPad 2 tablets were sold this weekend until Apple releases actual figures, that hasn’t stopped a patchwork of estimates and insider reports. The latest metric coming to us is that 7,200 of the next-generation devices were sold Friday at the Cupertino, Calif. company’s New York City flagship store, the first day the iPad was available.

While the report cites a “well-connected source,” the numbers seem to echo a statement on weekend iPad 2 consumer demand. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster and his team found 1,109 people were lined-up at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store this weekend – up from 703 when the original iPad was released in 2010.

In addition, despite measures to reduce lack of inventory and a wider availability, Apple reportedly has stretched the waiting time for iPad 2 to one month. Electronics retail giant Best Buy also announced it sold out of its iPad 2 inventory (including accessories) in just 10 minutes.

iPad 2 Demand Pushes Delivery Time to 4-5 Weeks

 

On Tuesday, Apple once again revised its estimated shipping time for orders placed online for the new iPad 2. And the revision isn't going to be well-received by prospective iPad 2 buyers eager to get their hands on the second generation tablet. According to individuals who placed their orders this morning, Apple has delayed shipping times again, saying it may now take four to five weeks for delivery.

 

Despite initial rumors that Apple stores were getting massive iPad 2 shipments yesterday (and opening their doors extra early today) it appears that the supply shortage has somehow worsened between Monday into Tuesday. By all accounts, the iPad 2 remains sold-out, with any new inventory quickly being snatched seemingly within moments of hitting shelves. For now, Apple isn't addressing supply shortages except to say that "demand for the next generation iPad 2 has been amazing. We are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible."

 

On each of the iPad 2's three business days of availability so far (Friday, Monday, and Tuesday), the estimated shipping time has been extended by a matter of weeks. While some analysts believe that delivery times could reach upwards of eight weeks before the end of this week, Apple is reportedly turning on the supply faucet to a substantial degree to prevent any significant customer outrage and potential loss of business to a competing tablet.

 

Although the precise numbers aren't yet known, Wall Street analysts believe that Apple has likely sold somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million iPad 2s since the Friday product launch.

Microphone In iPad 2 WiFi Offers Better Quality Than 3G Model

 

If you’ve recently bought an iPad 2 WiFi + 3G (good luck finding one now with a 4-5 weeks wait on the Apple Store) and your friends have told you they can’t really hear you on FaceTime, that might be a problem with the microphone in your 3G model. According to iLounge, the iPad 2 WiFi offers clearer microphone quality as the microphone has been placed in the top metal housing, whilst it sits in the plastic antenna band on the iPad WiFi + 3G.

 

Perhaps due to this change in materials, the Wi-Fi model offers markedly cleaner audio than that of the 3G, which sounds slightly muffled and echo-prone as a result. Curiously, we found the GSM 3G model’s audio to be slightly preferable to that of the CDMA model, which seemed to suffer the issues more severely.

The iPad 2 saw a change in size and shape of the microphone, and iLounge reports the differences in sonic qualities can be clearly spotted in apps like FaceTime with the iPad’s screen facing the user.

Here Come The Angry Birds iPad 2 Cases

In a trip to the Apple Store back in December I noticed something really curious (and colored) on the shelves: official Angry Birds cases for the iPhone were heavily featured by Apple inside the retail space like no other case. The accessory section in the Apple Store is trafficked all day by customers willing to enhance their iOS or Mac experience, and especially with the iPhone 4 third-party cases of all kinds saw an explosion in demand and popularity. But the promotion reserved to these Angry Birds cases was unprecedented.

Now the same is about to happen all over again with the iPad 2, which doesn’t need a case according to Apple but still it’s going to experience the invasion of third-party accessories like the iPhone 4 did. Whilst most manufacturers are ramping up production for their cases, folios and stands now that the iPad 2 is available, Gear4 has once again signed Rovio over to release official Angry Birds hard-plastic cases for the iPad 2. Available in three different flavors at $49.99, the cases feature holes to let you access all the buttons and hardware cutouts of the iPad 2: camera, speaker, dock connector, and so forth. The iPad 2 is a beautiful piece of hardware and Steve Jobs wants you to use the elegant Smart Cover to carry it around, without actually covering the device’s beauty. But trust me: your wife kids are going to love the Angry Birds case.

Frys lists WiFi-only Galaxy Tab at $350, now accepting pre-orders

$399.99 for a WiFi-only Galaxy Tab not low enough to pique your interest? Then perhaps $349.99 will be a bit more to your liking. While there's still no indication of a release date, Frys.com is now accepting pre-orders for the device at that price, which is presumably not a mistake. Of course, the device itself is identical to the regular Galaxy Tab apart from that "wifi-only" bit, including the same 7-inch display, 16GB of storage, and Android 2.2 with Flash 10.1 support. Those willing to sign a contract will soon be able to get a 3G model for even less, however, with Sprint now set to offer the Tab for a mere $200 on a two-year contract.

New iPad 2 Ad: We Believe

But when technology gets out of the way, everything becomes more delightful.

What separates Apple from other companies can be summed up in a single quote. Apple isn’t a company that’s competing on specs, nor do they wish to win the gigahertz war. Quite simply, the answer to the tablet computer isn’t the ability to play Flash media or score the highest on a GPU benchmark. Apple understands that it’s how you use a tablet, and not what it is, that makes the iPad a very real Post-PC device. At the iPad 2 announcement, Steve Jobs said:
