Xperia Play Playstation Phone Detailed, Hits This Spring With 50 Games

 

After much rumors and one very disturbing commercial, Sony Ericsson today confirmed that the Playstation Phone, which is officially called the Xperia Play, will hit this spring on the Verizon Network with 50 games, a 5.0 megapixel camera and a 4-inch multi-touch display.

 

"This Spring, expect to see a lot of people with their heads down and thumbs up," said Peter Farmer, Head of Marketing for North America, Sony Ericsson. "Xperia PLAY combined with the power of the Verizon Wireless network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want – the ultimate gaming experience."

 

There will be more than 50 games available for the Play when it launches this spring, according to Sony Ericsson. Pre-loaded games will include Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tetris.

After months of rumours, leaks and even a Superbowl commercial, Sony Ericsson has formally announced that the Xperia Play will launch next month alongside 50 games. The Android-powered smartphone is designed to take advantage of games, thanks in part to its PlayStation-certified slide-out interface. The device, dubbed the “world’s first ever PlayStation-certified device”, will utilise the recently announced PlayStation Suite when it goes live at the end of the year. For now it will come pre-loaded with Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, Tetris and one legendary PSone game. No details on what that game is yet, mind.

 

Apparently over 20 publishing partners are on board with 50 titles due in time for the device’s launch. According to Sony Ericsson, the number is increasing “on a weekly basis”. Optimised versions of big-hitters such as Dead Space, FIFA and Assassin’s Creed are all on the horizon.

Sony Ericsson has kicked off a contest to promote their new Playstation Phone, Xperia Play in some European Countries and it has resulted in the device’s price being revealed.

 

The contest has 10 Xperia Play phones up for grab. The contest page values the total amount to be 4999,00 € which means one unit is priced around 499,00 €.

 

This means the phone will cost roughly $400.
