Tablet Camera Tests: iPad 2 vs. Motorola Xoom vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab

Odds are, if you ask anyone waiting in line for an iPad 2, they'll list plenty of reasons why they're lusting after Apple's latest camera-equipped tablet.

According to our lab tests, image quality isn't going to be one of them. In this case, megapixels did matter, and the iPad 2's 0.69-megapixel sensor turned out iPod touch-esque results. On a bright note, the new iPad does shoot decent video, and it even outscored a dedicated video-capture device in that realm. Not too shabby.

We put the first generation of camera-equipped tablets through our labs' subjective testing for image and video quality, and although some tablets fared much better than others in terms of photo quality and footage, they were all outscored by the output of the iPhone 4.

Of course, that's not a dealbreaker for prospective tablet buyers. While cameras are useful things to have on a tablet, they're mainly in the mix for a few reasons, and none of them overlap entirely with the contents of your camera bag: videochats, augmented-reality apps, and immediately shareable pics and video while you're out and about.

The cameras in these first- and second-generation tablets are serviceable for any of those tasks, and for anyone who routinely overlays effects and filters on their on-the-go photos (via Instagram, Camera Bag, or Hipstamatic, for example), the lacking source-image quality may not make much of a difference.

In any event, here's a look at how the iPad 2, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab handle their business in the realm of capturing photos and video. We test each camera that comes through our doors in a consistent way: we print unmarked 8-by-10 sample images, put them in front of a panel of judges, and rate each sample image for exposure quality, color accuracy, sharpness, and distortion. The panel of judges also watches sample video clips shot with each device in bright indoor lighting and low-light conditions; those clips are also rated for overall video quality and audio quality.

For these tablet image- and video-quality tests, we used a test pool of the Apple iPad 2, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab. We also included sample images from three other devices in our evaluations as a basis of comparison: the Apple iPhone 4, the Apple iPod touch, and the Canon PowerShot S95 point-and-shoot camera. For our video tests, we also included test footage from the Cisco Flip Video UltraHD in our comparative evaluations.


Here's how the tablets fared against one another—and the non-tablet competitors—in each round of our tests:

Still image quality

The top-rated tablet in our image-quality testing was the Motorola Xoom, which boasts a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera that scored fairly well in the exposure quality and sharpness departments. That said, the Xoom trailed the Apple iPhone 4 when it came to overall image quality, and it trailed both of the other tablets in the color-accuracy department.

Just behind the Xoom is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which offers a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera. The Galaxy Tab was neck-and-neck with the Xoom in many of our image-testing categories, but our judges found the Tab's camera most lacking in the exposure quality and distortion departments.

Heading up the rear of our testbed was the Apple iPad 2, which has a 0.69-megapixel camera that performs similarly to the camera in the latest iPod touch. The iPad 2's camera snaps photos that look decent on its own display, but are noticeably grainy and muddy once you print them out. The iPad 2 was also one of two devices in our testbed without a flash (the other being the iPod touch), so you'll get the best results in broad daylight.

The Xoom completed a sweep of both still-image and video categories by turning in the highest overall score of the tablets in our testbed. The Xoom captures 720p high-definition video at 30 frames per second, and it bested the tablet competition in our bright-light, low-light, and audio-capture tests. It outscored every device other than the Canon PowerShot S95 and Apple iPhone 4 for overall video quality, but that was only good enough for a score of Fair.

The iPad 2 landed in second place among the tablets, and it also captures 720p high-definition video at 30 frames per second. It earned a better video rating than the Cisco Flip Video UltraHD in our bright-light tests, and it was on par with the Flip in low-light situations, but it captured the weakest-sounding audio of the devices in our testbed. The iPad 2 also earned an overall video rating of Fair.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab's 720p/30fps video trailed all the devices in our testbed in terms of video quality, placing last or second-to-last in each video category. The Galaxy Tab turned in an overall video-quality score of Poor.

2010 m. spalio mėn. „Samsung“ pristatė pirmąją 7 colių „Galaxy Tab“ planšetę, kuria buvo pradėta prekiauti visai netrukus. Tai įvyko beveik po 9 mėnesių, kai Styvas Džobsas (Steve Jobs) pristatė pirmąjį „Apple iPad“ 9,7 colių įrenginį, kuriuo JAV pradėta prekiauti 2010 m. balandžio mėnesį. Kai kuriose rinkose oficiali prekybaprasidėjo dar po mėnesio ar vėliau (Lietuvoje pradėta prekiauti tik 2011 m. sausio pabaigoje). Ir štai, š.m. kovo 11 dieną – „Apple“ pristatė naująją „iPad 2“ planšetę. Jei „Apple“ būtų standartinė įmonė – didelė tikimybė, kad ji šiuo sprendimu būtų padariusi sau „meškos paslaugą“. Visų pirma dėl to, kad vartotojai būtų nepatenkinti tuo, jog jų pirmosios kartos obuoliukas taip greitai paseno ir abejotų ar pirkti antrąjį. Juk trečiasis gali būti pristatytas metų bėgyje? Tačiau dažniausiai šiai įmonei rinkos dėsniai negalioja.

 

Panašu, kad šioje rinkoje po truputį darosi karšta. Praėjusią savaitę „Samsung“ pristatė dar du „Galaxy Tab“ modelius, kurie papildo jų asortimentą. Dabar jis susideda iš 7 bei 8,9 ir 10,1 colių planšetinių kompiuterių. Ir tai dar nėra viskas. Šioje rinkoje savo jėgas bando „Motorola Xoom“, „Dell Streak 7“, „BlackBerry Playbook“, „LG G-Slate“ ir „HP TouchPad“. Šių įrenginių palyginimai:

 

Peržiūrėjus technines charakteristikas reikėtų nepamiršti ir kitų ne mažiau svarbių dalykų: kaip galėsite panaudoti savo įrenginį su kitais įrenginiais namie, ar tai bus lengva atlikti, kiek galėsite atsisiųsti programų iš gamintojo programų parduotuvės, galų gale kurį laikant rankose jausitės geriausiai? Beje, „Motorola“ skelbianesidžiaugianti „Xoom“, pirmojo įrenginio su „Android“ 3.0 operacine sistema, pardavimais, o „BlackBerry“ pranešė, kad „Playbook“ su „BlackBerry“ operacine sistema bus galima naudotis „Android 2.3” operacinei sistemai pritaikytas programas. Tai dar labiau sustiprina „BlackBerry“ prieš kitus konkurentus, tačiau kartu užduoda ir du klausimus:

• 1. Ar programų kurėjams reikės esamas programas pritaikyti „BlackBerry“, ar jos veiks iš karto be jokių pakeitimų?
• 2. Ar netolimoje ateityje „Android“ pritaikytos programos pradės veikti ir „BlackBerry“ išmaniuosiuose telefonuose?

Žinoma, reikėtų nepamiršti ir to, kad „BlackBerry“, kuris buvo pradėtas gaminti Kanados įmonės „Research In Motion“ dar 1999 metais, ilgą laiką JAV ir Kanadoje buvo išmaniųjų telefonų lyderis, tad gali būti, kad šio įrenginio laukia daug potencialių pirkėjų. Šiose rinkose „Playbook“ jau galima užsisakyti, tačiau jis bus pristatytas ne anksčiau balandžio 19 dienos.

 

JAV vykstant intensyviam karui tarp gamintojų ir telekomunikacijų paslaugų tiekėjų nematome nieko panašaus Lietuvos rinkoje, tad pakalbinome Lietuvos mobiliojo ryšio operatorius. „Bitė Lietuva“ ryšių su visuomene atstovė Raminta Rimkienė teigia, kad kol kas per anksti kalbėti apie „BlackBerry Playbook“ pardavimus Lietuvoje, nes gamintojas dar nėra patvirtinęs pristatymo datų Europai. Beje, „BlackBerry“ programų parduotuvė „AppWorld“ Bitėje turėtų pradėti veikti dar šiais metais.

 

Daiva Selickaitė, „Omnitel“ ryšių su visuomene vadovė, informavo, kad nuo 2010 metų gruodžio mėnesio „Omnitel“ prekiauja trimis planešetiniais kompiuteriais: „Samsung Galaxy Tab“, „Huawei S7“ ir „ZTE Light“. Vienintelis telekomunikacijų operatorius turintis oficialaus „Apple“ atstovo statusą, neparduoda „iPad“ kompiuterių, tačiau kelioms dešimtims mokinių iš trijų Lietuvos mokyklų suteikėgalimybę jais naudotis. Beje, kada „Omnitel“ pradės prekybą „iPad 2“ kompiuteriais kol kas nėra aišku. Didžioje Britanijoje, kur yra 20 kartų daugiau gyventojų nei Lietuvoje, prekyba šiais įrenginiais buvo pradėta praėjusį penktadienį, kovo 25 d. Video medžiagą kaip atrodė gyva eilė laukianti šio įrenginio galite pamatyti šiek tiek žemiau.

 

„Omnitel“ ryšių su visuomene vadovė teigė, kad planšetinių kompiuterių pardavimai vasario mėnesį du su puse karto viršijo gruodžio mėnesio pardavimus, o kovo mėnesį jie turėtų viršyti penkis kartus.

Samsung confirms WiFi-only Galaxy Tab availability: April 10th, $350

We've already seen it turn up on a few retail sites, but Samsung has now finally officially confirmed the launch details for its WiFi-only Galaxy Tab. It will be available online and at retail stores across the US on April 10th for $349.99. Specs otherwise remain the same as the 3G version, including a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, 32GB of internal storage (with a microSD card slot for up to an additional 32GB), rear and front-facing cameras, and Android 2.2 with support for Flash 10.1 -- from the looks of things, it's also only available with a white back. Honestly, we were a little bit worried that Samsung's rail-thin Galaxy Tab 10.1 was a mockup -- you know, seeing as how Sammy never turned it on -- but fast-forward to today and there's a working prototype in Tinhte.vn's capable arms. Yes, the Vietnamese site that's been leaking delicious Apple prototypes -- not to mention the HP TouchPad's SIM slot -- found a working version of the 0.33-inch thin slate at an unnamed Samsung booth, and proceeded to dive into the sticky-sweet mess of Android 3.0 and iPad 2 comparisons that such a discovery affords. You'll find all that and some Angry Birds in the video immediately above.

Jame buvo parodyta tik lopinėlis naujovių, tačiau tvirtai galime teigti – aštuntoji programos versija atneš didžiausius pokyčius per visus 25 produkto gyvavimo metus.

Kompanija kurdama naują operacinę užsibrėžė tikslą sukurti vieną sistemą, kuri lygiai taip pat patogiai veiktų su 8 colių planšetiniu kompiuteriu ir itin galingu stalo kompiuteriu bei milžinišku jo ekranu. „Jokių kompromisų, tai buvo labai svarbu mums“, - interviu „AllThingsDigital“ sakė „Windows“ sistemos padalinio vadovas Stevenas Sinofsky.

Naujosios operacinės sistemos ašis – gyvosios piktogramos. Jos primena „Windows Phone 7“ taikomas mikroprogramas. Visos „Windows 8“ (kodinis sistemos pavadinimas) programos bus atvaizduojamos šiuo principu. Tai specialūs laukai, kuriuose pateikiama dalis programos informacijos. Štai pavyzdžiui orų programos gyvoji piktograma rodo koks oras lauke dar neatvėrus programos. Jei norime gauti daugiau informacijos, pirštu paspaudus gyvąją piktogramą programa atveriama visu dydžiu.

Nu jo, man irgi pažiūrėjus dilema tokia iškilo kaip ten tas stumdymas su pele bus o šiaip visai nebloga man pasirodė, bent jau ant tablečių tai tikrai atrodo, jog bus labai gera ir patogi. Tik bus įdomu pabandyt ant PC tokią, be apatinio taskbaro ir panašiai.

Apple has filled preliminary injunction against The Galaxy line in Germany, Netherlands and Australia and the have banned the device from hitting the market until the hearing of Apple’s request.

Samsung have announced that they response to Apple will be more aggressive from now on. After that Verizon and T-Mobile has filled an amicus curiae briefs in support of Samsung against Apple and their briefs has been accepted by the judge. Also Samsung said that they will be banning the next iPhone from hitting the Korean market as they claim that the device is infringes some of it’s patents.
