iPad konkurentai?

Na va, vienas + Xoom'o

Xoom gets USB host functionality, no thanks to Motorola or Google

Nuotrauka

The Xoom may have gotten a slight software update last night to prepare it for its long-awaited Flash playing capabilities, but some of the folks over at SlateDroid have an even more impressive -- though much less official -- update, bringing USB host functionality to Moto's slate. Tinkerer-extraordinaire roebeet is the man to thank, granting Xoom owners the ability to read media from USB drives, essentially giving you a limitless amount of storage -- provided you own the necessary microUSB OTG (on-the-go) cable and a rooted Xoom. If you've safely satisfied the pre-requisites, enabling the new-new is just a few file transfers and command line entries away. Full instructions available at the source link... if you dare.

Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi-Only Version To Ship April 4 For $399

Nuotrauka

It’s not certain when Samsung will officially announce this, but the unveiling is very likely to happen at CTIA in Orlando, Florida later this month. The device should have the same specs as the 3G-enabled version featuring a single-core 1GHz Hummingbird processor running Android 2.2 with dual cameras, 16GB storage, and Flash 10.1 support.

The price point of $399 is much more appealing than the high priced 3G version Samsung pushed previously that failed to gain traction. However, if the specs listed above are true, the device will be left in the dust again by its competitors. Especially with the launch of the iPad 2 today featuring a dual-core processor and the Motorola Xoom already running Android Honeycomb.

Adobe Flash Player leaks for Motorola Xoom

March 18th may seem like an eternity if you expected your Motorola Xoom to come with Adobe Flash on day one. But you know what? If you put your trust in a mysterious file floating about the internet, there's no need to wait that long. MyDroidWorld obtained possession of a leaked build of Adobe Flash Player 10.2 for the Xoom, which doesn't need root or even a preliminary update to install -- you just need to check the "Unknown sources" box under Settings > Applications, sideload the file or download it from the Xoom's browser and you're good to go. The best part? Based on our preliminary testing, Flash performs exceedingly well on the Xoom's dual-core Tegra 2 processor.

While this early build of Flash 10.2 was pretty choppy during HD playback, low-res video content rendered at perfectly viewable speeds, and we were able to play games (like Nanaca Crash and Canabalt) so long as they didn't require anything more than single-button control schemes. By contrast, Hulu was a no-go (it's still blocked), and this build has some kinks to work out when it comes to multitasking -- while any single Flash site ran well and we could quickly tab between, the more Flash-heavy tabs we had open, the slower each one ran individually -- which is why the video above starts out so choppy. Adobe's UI also seemed to have some difficulty detecting when we wanted to make a Flash item full-screen. Typically, you double-tap an item to enlarge it, but sometimes that didn't work, and other times a context-sensitive UI bar would randomly drop from the top of a Flash window to let us know we could focus on it individually. Before you judge the merits of Flash on tablet, however, remember that this is a leaked version of a beta release, and if it's this good out of the gate, we're pretty excited about how well it might perform after a few tweaks. Don't miss our video above, and find the file you need to install Flash yourself at our source link.

We managed to get Flash to drop one of those context-sensitive buttons during a session of Canabalt and make the window full screen, which not only enlarged the window but also seriously sped up our little runner -- probably by redirecting the tablet's resources to our game. Photographic proof after the break!

Xbox Tablet With Built-in Kinect To Be Successor To Xbox 360?

Vice president of Epic Games, Mark Rein, in an announcement of Unreal Engine 3 on the iPad, expressed his thoughts on the future of gaming consoles. He thought the future of Xbox gaming console could be a gaming tablet with a built-in Kinect.

Nuotrauka

Below is the excerpt from Rein’s statement

Imagine a future Xbox 360 that is actually a tablet you carry around. It will have more power than 360 does today, with technology like Kinect built right in. Imagine walking into a bar with some friends, propping it up on the table and playing games like Dance Central or Kinect Adventures anywhere you go. Then when you get home that same device will use technology like AirPlay or wireless HDMI to connect to your big screen, you’ll pick up a wireless controller, or use your phone as controller to play games like Gears of War.

I am, however, having hard time imagining how would Kinect work on a handheld device? If you have to prop it up to make it work, that’s plain stupid. Two people having hard time seeing anything at all on a 10 inch screen while playing the Xbox tablet is how it sounds to me. This either was way too creative an idea, so much creative that I can’t understand how would it work, or way too stupid.

This isn’t happening anytime soon though since Microsoft is sticking to Xbox 360 for now and Xbox 720 (or whatever is it called) isn’t on the tables.

Na būtų šito privalumas dėl tos kinetict kamerikės... :thumbsup4:

The HP Touchpad and a new 7-inch webOS tablet codenamed HP Opal are among multiple incoming slates included in a new retailer roadmap leak. According to the document, acquired by PreCentral, the Touchpad will drop in June priced between $499 for the 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB version.

Meanwhile, a 7-inch webOS model will arrive in September, though details of hardware and pricing are unknown. We’re assuming this is the same Opal as leaked earlier this year, expected to measure around 180 x 144 x 13mm and have a 1024 x 768 capacitive touchscreen.

Meanwhile, a 7-inch Acer – which we’re guessing is the Iconia Tab A100 – is arriving in April for $399, though it’s said to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Acer has previously promised. It will apparently be followed by 10-inch tablets from HTC, Dell, Acer (presumably the Iconia Tab A500) and Toshiba in June, all running Honeycomb and priced between $449 and $499.

ASUS’ Eee Pad TF101 Windows 7 tablet hits the FCC

Nuotrauka

The Apple iPad 2 may be dominating headlines today, but lets not forget ASUS’ growing lineup of tablets. Today, the company’s Windows 7-powered Eee Pad made an appearance on the FCC, winning approval for its WiFi and Bluetooth functionality.

The Eee Pad TF101, not to be confused with ASUS’ Eee Pad EP121, will feature a 10.1” screen. ASUS hasn’t published the device’s other specs yet, but we’re guessing the TF101 will feature an Intel CULV processor just like the EP121.

FCC label pics of the TF101 do reveal an attractive exterior that appears to be covered with carbon fiber as well as a rear-facing camera. So far we like what we see – hopefully ASUS publishes more details soon.

HP TouchPad coming June, webOS for PC beta by year's end

Nuotrauka

We may have to wait until summer to purchase a webOS slate, but it won't be summer's end -- PreCentral reports that the company has confirmed a June release date for the HP TouchPad. At the enterprise-oriented HP Summit in San Francisco, CEO Leo Apotheker finally offered the month of release, and also reportedly said that the company's full-force webOS on PC initiative will begin in a humble way -- the beta will run in a web browser, and we'll see it by the end of the year.

Oke. :thumbsup4:

Verizon waives Xoom and Galaxy Tab activation fees on contracts from March 1st in a limited time offer

Nuotrauka

In an unforeseen act of generosity, Verizon has decided to scrap the $35 activation fee it charges with purchases of the 3G-equipped Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab tablets, leaving customers' wallets a little heavier and hearts a little lighter. This change will be effective on month-to-month contracts starting from the first of this month or later -- meaning a nice little refund for anyone acquiring an Android tablet through Big Red after March 1st -- however we're also hearing it'll be a limited time offer. The intel has been communicated via email to Mobile Burn, and Droid-Life has also obtained a document saying as much, while we're in the process of confirming it ourselves. All the same, it looks safe to get the (modest) celebrations going.

Vava... Prasideda jų aktivacijos... :P

Teardowns Show Samsung Built the A5

Nuotrauka

The iPad's A5 chip was manufactured by Samsung, according to two independent teardowns and analyses of the latest generation system-on-a-chip. Despite rumors that Apple was going with Taiwan Semiconductor to fab the A5, decapsulations of the SoC by UBM TechInsights and Chipworks clearly show telltales of a Samsung fab process.

The process analysis and lab techs at UBM TechInsights dissected the A5 using optical die and scanning electron microscope cross-section images to look at the edge seal of the silicon die and the pitch of the first metal interconnect, as well as taking logic and SRAM transistor gate measurements. They then compared what they found to other manufacturers, including other chips fabbed by Samsung using its 45nm process, such as the A4 SoC found in the iPhone and the original iPad. The indicators all lined up clearly, showing that Samsung must have been responsible for the chip's fabrication.

Chipworks this week also did a decap of the A5 and their chipheads experts also concluded, by comparing the shape of the transistor gates and dielectric layers in the A5 to last year's A4 CPU, that Samsung is the manufacturer. Both analyses found 512 MB of Low Power DDR2 DRAM, but UBM, which decapped two different A5s from two separate iPad 2s found different DRAM chips in each: one from Samsung and one from Elpida. This indicates that Apple is being flexible in its component sourcing, which may prove vital as Japan struggles to restart its manufacturing industry after the devastating Sendai earthquake.

The rumors about Apple going to a new chip foundry aren't put to rest by these revelations, however. These reports, which go back to the early part of this year, rely both on industry gossip and raw business pragmatics to assert that Apple will get future chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest independent foundry. TSMC has the most capacity for 40-nm molds, which will be key for the A5's future development as the current 45-nm chip is almost twice the size of the A4. Additionally, as Samsung is pitting its Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Tabs against the iPhone and iPad, Apple is at the mercy of a major competitor for an essential component of its products. With that competition heating up, it's reasonable to expect that relationship may be on its way out sooner rather than later.

"CopyCats"... :)

Motorola Xoom with Sprint insignia, Nexus S 4G logo leak out

Nuotrauka

If you've been following these here pages closely, you'll know that a little device named the Nexus S 4G is coming to Sprint's network, with the expectation being that it'll be announced at CTIA early next week. Fueling our previous info on the matter, we've now gotten ahold of an image purporting to be the logo that Sprint and Google will be using to represent their new WiMAX-equipped collaboration. That can be found after the break, but what you're really eager to learn more about is that image of a Motorola Xoom with a Now Network logo on it, right? Well, it comes from the same source, whose record of revealing Sprint pre-release hardware (and not getting fired) is quite exemplary, so we're willing to credit it as the real deal. We've no launch dates or pricing details to share as yet, but it's not unreasonable to expect Sprint will be disclosing all that juicy info during its extra-long CTIA presser. And if not, we'll keep tracking down these leaks and get it to you anyway!
