SEGA Rally Online Arcade

Last week, eagle-eyed internet detectives spotted a new Sega Rally game listed on the Korean Ratings board, filed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Without letting the rumor pot heat to a boil, Sega has announced that indeed SEGA Rally Online Arcade is coming to the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade in 2011.

 

The new HD racing title is inspired by SEGA Rally Revo and SEGA Rally 3. Staple features from the franchise like Championship Battle and Time Attack make a return, while implementing new online modes with 6 player support. Rally enthusiasts can also count on Achievements and 13 vehicles to choose from.

 

“We’ve blended our hit arcade racing series with the best elements from the console versions to bring our fans the SEGA Rally experience in compact, downloadable format,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA. “Whether they’re new to the SEGA Rally series or they’ve participated in countless races over the years, we’re confident everyone will enjoy the wide variety of features included in this fan favorite.”

 

No specific date or price has been announced - but we have to believe it needs to give Dirt 3 a wide berth, and will likely cost $15.

Sega made the game official this morning, not only for PlayStation Network, but also Xbox Live Arcade. The game will feature all of the gusto that made it such a hit back in its 90's debut, when players took laps with both the arcade and Sega Saturn versions, while borrowing a thing or two from the more current Rally releases, including the 2007 home game Revo and the arcade-only Sega Rally 3.

 

First off, Sega Rally Online Arcade will be in high-definition, a huge push forward for the series. You'll be able to see the tracks fly back with utmost detail, complete with realistic vehicle models (these aren't fake rally cars here), variant weather conditions (we're looking forward to the snowy tracks) and a steady frame rate. There will be a mixture of old and new tracks, including the '95 Desert track that was made famous in the original Rally game. No word yet on exactly how many tracks will be included (or if the announcer will call us "baby" again), or if more can be added via DLC, but we'll find out very soon.

 

Of course, a racing game is only as good as its competition, and it's here that Sega Rally Online Arcade lives up to its name. The game will feature a two-player local option via split-screen, so friends can race against one another while sitting on the couch. Online racing bumps it up several notches with up to six players being able to take part in a match, complete with online leaderboard support for best lap times.

 

If you prefer the solo player experience, there are various modes to choose from, including a Championship Battle Mode, where you shoot for first place victories, and Time Attack, where you aim for the best lap time possible. (This is also where the leaderboards really come into play.) The more you race in the game, the more content you unlock, including new vehicles. We're just hoping that some of the classic Rally cars show up.

SEGA Rally Online Arcade Coming To Xbox Live Wednesday

 

SEGA Rally Online Arcade is coming to Xbox Live this Wednesday and PSN at a later date. The game brings back the classic SEGA Rally series originally developed from 1995 to 1998 for the Dreamcast and PC. SEGA Rally Online Arcade will include the classic Championship Battle mode and Time Attack, with the addition of the online racing mode with up to five players. The game will have 13 cars to choose from and online leaderboards all for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).
