Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded

Frederik Schreiber, an amateur modeler itching to update Duke Nukem 3D into the present, has gotten permission from the studio now in charge of the franchise to create 'Duke Nukem Next-Gen' for the PC.

That video above gives you the best idea of what Schreiber's going for in Duke Nukem Next-Gen, which he says is a codename for the project and not its finished title. Above, that's Hollywood Holocaust in a no-weapons test mode.

When finished, the game will include a three-episode singleplayer campaign and "a full fledged Multiplayer Component." It "will be released free to everyone - NO other games required," Schreiber notes.

The free aspect is because he now has a personal non-commercial license from Gearbox Software to go forward with his project, which went viral after he posted a test map and screenshots on the studio's official forum late last month.

Realizing this would be sunk if the rights holders to the game didn't bless it, Schreiber managed to get his idea in front of Gearbox's corporate counsel. "Luckily Gearbox was interested in supporting the project," Schreiber writes, "which resulted in a personal non-commercial license to Duke Nukem."

When does the game release? Well, just like its notorious namesake, "when it's done." That said, "We won't hold back the experience, until the final game gets released," Schreiber writes. Everyone will be able to play the game's "first official Milestone Test," which will be a multiplayer test on a few maps, with the weapons, items and objects included on those maps.

The nine-man team has an internal date set for the game's multiplayer demo "and it's sooner than you think."

taigi zmogus butu ir taip sita paleides i neta ,bet dabar jis gavo oficialia asmenine nekomercine licenzija siam projektui is paciu Gearbox. taigi zaidimas bus free for all, nemokamas kitaip sakant.ir tai bus butent tas senas geras Duke Nukem 3D ,tik su next gen grafika bei Multiplayeriu.

The officially licensed HD remake of Duke Nukem 3D is in full-on production mode and multiplayer beta testing is about to begin. However, this time around there’s gonna be more than just DukeMatches. Not only that, but the voice of Duke – Jon. St John will be re-recording his original lines and all new one liners for this HD remake.

Horde mode is a bit like tower defense where you will have to fight off waves of aliens that are coming at ya hard. Project lead Frederik Schreiber describes the mode in detail below:

In our version of Horde Mode (Waves of enemies attacking you), we are introducing what we call “Drop Pods”. Drop Pods is a new way of solving a few critical problems in the usual Firefight/Horde Games out there.

Each Wave will appear on the map, in what we call “Drop pods”. When the game-mode starts, Drop Pods will be flying down from the sky, landing on specific points on the map.

Each Drop pod opens a door, from which the enemies from each wave will spawn. Those enemies teleport into the Drop Pod, from alien motherships (not visible on the map)

Each Wave will work this way:

Wave 1 will have one Drop pod, from where all the enemies from wave 1 will spawn.

Wave 2 will have 2 drop pods, spread across the map.

Wave 3 will have 3 pods, etc.

All the way up to 6 pods max:

The enemies will continue to respawn from the drop pods, until they reach the max enemy cap of the wave (Example, Wave 1: 10 enemies).

Once all Drop pods are destroyed (Each drop pod, has a “Health meter” that appears above it, when shot at)the wave ends, and points are handed to the players.

The Drop pods are a great way of doing something unique, and they eliminate the problem of “Campers”,or players defending the same areas, by forcing them to get around the map to destroy each pod.

When we researched on how to eliminate certain problems, our first concern was campers. Way too often Firefight/Horde Modes, are crippled by campers, staying at the same spot, and using the spawnpoints to their advantage.

We want players to navigate around the map, take chances, and get a good flow going. That’s why we think the Drop Pods, will create a more diverse gamemode, presenting the players with a greater challenge.

Duke Nukem 3D 20th anniversary to be celebrated by remaster?

There is definitely something going on in the world of Duke Nukem. The 20th anniversary of the release of Duke Nukem 3D is in just over a week's time, apparently. On the official Duke Nukem website you will find a simple page with an anniversary banner, a headline stating something is "Coming Soon", and a countdown timer with just over a week left on the clock. Meanwhile Mr Nukem has opened his own Twitter account, and we are warned that "some people may find Duke's Twitter posts offensive." To top it all off we have some "official screenshots" of a game purportedly called 'Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour' circulating on the internet.

So the official information on any new possible Duke Nukem game release is purposely thin on the ground. Gearbox wants to tease the anniversary celebration game but just enough to build interest until the expected reveal / launch in a week's time. As it’s the 20th anniversary of Duke Nukem 3D, it is this particular game that will be the focus of any remake / redux / tribute game that may emerge. Remember Duke Nukem first arrived as a DOS-based 320×200, 16-color EGA shareware side scroller in 1991.

Looking at the leaked info and screenshots is a more interesting but less reliable pursuit. In the reddit post by Tezla55 the new game is said to be called 'Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour' and is being developed by Nerve Games. According toPCGamesN, Nerve were behind the likes of Doom 3 expansion Resurrection of Evil, and helped with some recent Call of Duty titles.

Among the linked images are plenty of screen shots, said to be from a press-pack in preparation. The in-game graphics mix up the original old Duke Nukem 3D (2D) sprites with new / improved / remastered 3D assets and new game content and modes. Purported new modes include Co-Op and deathmatch. Many reddit comments seem to reckon the screenshots are fakes. Furthermore, while in 2D gaming the pixelated revival has won some plaudits, people don't seem to appreciate this graphic style in 3D games. We shall see next Friday night...
