Overview

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is the the eighth game in the XCOM franchise, and the second game in the rebooted series - the first being XCOM: Enemy Unknown in 2012. The Bureau is a third-person, squad-based, tactical game set in America in 1962. After being in development in some form since 2006, the game was announced in 2010 as a first-person shooter under the name of "XCOM". On April 26, 2013, it was re-announced under its current name.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified was released in North America on August 20, 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC via Steam. The game was released in released other regions on August 23, 2013.

Story

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified tells the origin story of the XCOM project. The initiative was created to combat the alien threat during the Cold War. The main character, William Carter, is a field officer in charge of leading a team to neutralize threats.

Gameplay

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is a tactical third-person shooter. Players take on the role of secret FBI agent, William Carter; the player must track the radio and radar for alien activity and perform field investigations to ensure that the task force gets proper funding to stay on top of their game. The game features RPG progression elements and squad based combat.

As in other XCOM titles, permanent death of customizable squad-mates will factor into gameplay.

Development History

The Bureau underwent an extended development cycle that saw it go through numerous iterations. It began life as a game simply called XCOM, and was first revealed to the public in 2010 as an FPS with an emphasis on stealth and investigation set during the Cold War era of the 1950s. The game was to feature aliens that were faceless and shapeless, emphasizing the idea of unknown enemies.

Over time, however, the initial design was altered to provide more structure with a linear story campaign featuring a variety of side missions. The emphasis on stealth and investigation was also dropped as the player's allied AI partners, originally NPCs, became controllable, and the formless enemies of the original concept were dropped for designs more akin to the Firaxis strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The game's perspective was shifted from first-person to third-person, as well, and a greater emphasis was placed on squad tactics and abilities in combat scenarios reminiscent of the Mass Effect series.

2K Games announced today the development of XCOM, a new first person shooter exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. XCOM is currently being developed by 2K Marin, the studio behind Bioshock 2, which sold millions since launched. The game will be filled with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

 

XCOM will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 and PC. No release date are set but it is slated to come out this year. Check back with us later this week for more.

Patvirtinti gandai apie dar vieną klasikinę seriją, kuri sugrįžta kiek kitokiu veidu. Dar nuo 1993-iais pasirodžiusio pirmojo „X-COM: UFO Defense“ (arba „UFO: Enemy Unknown“), ši taktinė serija, kurioje ateivių armijos veržiasi į Žemę, sulaukė neįtikėtino populiarumo ir buvo pripažinta kaip viena geriausių visų laikų kompiuterinių žaidimų. Tačiau paskutinis serijos žaidimas, „X-COM: Enforcer“ pasirodė dar 2001-aisiais metais.

 

Dabar, įsigijusi serijos teises kompanija „Take-Two“ paskelbė ruošianti naują serijos žaidimą, pavadintą tiesiog „XCOM“, kuris bus ne taktinė ėjimų strategija, o pirmojo asmens šaudyklė, nors žadama išlaikyti ir strategijos elementų. Žaidėjas taps FTB agentu, turinčiu išsiaiškinti apie paslaptingus žmoniją vėl puolančius priešus ir juos sunaikinti. The Official Xbox Magazine got the first look at 2K's upcoming XCOM title this month, with the first details on the game revealing that there's cause for both hope and concern among fans of the original's strategic twist.

 

The causes for hope? As promised when first revealed, there is some element of research and strategic planning to be had, with researchers and engineers working on new weapons and a choice of missions on offer that come and go in real-time, meaning the game's outcome will vary depending on which ones you choose and complete.

 

And the causes for concern? Well, the report makes it sound like your actual input on things like research is minimal, while the missions you can choose sound pre-programmed, and not the result of your active measures in combating the alien menace. Worse still is the suggestion that, at the time of the playthrough, while you had allies in the field with you as part of a promised "tactical" throwback to the original games, you couldn't actually issue any commands to them.

 

The other key take-away from the piece is that, story-wise, this isn't your Grandfather's X-Com, your Air Force base, FBI credentials and retro aesthetic a world away from the sci-fi trappings of Enemy unknown and Terror From The Deep.

 

Head below for a summary of the entire thing, which we'll point out now, is a game still in development (so stuff can change!). It's all sounding pretty great as a new game. But as an X-Com game? I'm beginning to have my doubts.

Though we've seen OXM's coverage of the upcoming XCOM reboot, PC Gamer also have a piece on the game, and it's now online. There's not much new in the way of info, but there's now some screenshots for you to...enjoy?

 

As you can see, this isn't a 50's-inspired America, it is 50's America. And while we've already caught the gist of the details from OXM's article, the following quote is new, serving perhaps as the crux of both the developer's intentions and long-time X-Com fan's fears.

 

"We're really good at making shooters" says design director Jonathan Pelling. "We've got a lot of experience doing that, and I think that provides a unique opportunity to present XCOM in a much more immersive and intimate format. Putting it into the first-person shooter is going to blow it up a little bit."

After one year from the latest updates on XCOM, the guys at 2K Marin shamelessly take advantage of the spotlight at E3 to show a new video game and announce, in so doing, the day of marketing on PC, Xbox 360 and, new to this 'Today, the PlayStation 3.

 

The glorious saga that has made the fortune of MicroProse, the XCOM has only the name and little else: the title, it will be a first-person shooter set in the '50s when a group of government agents finds himself forced to face a scary alien mutant form rained down from heaven (or some absurd parallel dimension) and managed to take control of a pleasant country town.

 

In the trailer you can view at top of this article can be seen for the first time power system devised by the developers to change the gaming experience in a manner not too different from that experienced with weapons modular BioShock 2, their latest work. The output XCOM is expected for March 6, 2012.

A slew of new The Bureau: XCOM Declassified press previews went live a short while ago as 2K Games debuted the game’s first gameplay trailer.

- Game has the same short gray sectoid soldiers as Enemy Unknown

- In Declassified, the sectoids move in real time

- The press demo has the sectoids moving in real time, and following a tall, lanky master as they brazenly strolled across what used to be an idyllic 1960s small-town America mainstreet like they owned the place

- Area is a warzone, lacks human life and is scarred with the smoking remains of bombed-out cars and burnt corpses

- Control a three-man squad

- Slow time with a button press, entering Battle Focus mode

- Play as XCOM agent William Carter

- Use Battle Focus to order your two disposable and renamable partners

- This alien encounter occurs 47 days into the invasion, though it is 1962

- The freshly minted XCOM bureau already has a variety of advanced weaponry and abilities at its disposal

- Other two agents have laser submachine guns and stat-boosting backpacks that look like unlicensed particle accelerators

- Carter only has two abilities at this particular point: a telekinetic lift and squad heal

- Battle Focus control wheel gives you access to your partners’ Engineer and Commando abilities

- When a soldier dies, you can run over to revive him or order the third squad member to help him up

- Replacing casualties is slightly easier than in XCOM, since you don’t have to level them up before their class is revealed

- 2K Marin says that the black goo-ball silacoids are intended to function like attack dogs in World War II and cause trouble for entrenched soldiers

- Muton: brutish soldier, roughly 12 feet tall, covered in heavy armor

- No base development, no researching technology, and nocapturing live aliens (you’ll simply pick up a dead alien’s gun and start firing
