It's been a little while since we looked into Monhan Nikki: Pokapoka Airu-mura, the PSP title that takes the world of Monster Hunter and makes a cutesy Animal Crossing-ish game out of it. The game's almost done, as it turns out -- it's coming out August 26 in Japan for 3990 yen, and Capcom's been holding pre-release demo events all over Japan to celebrate.

 

"There were a lot of women and families trying the game at the demo booths," producer Tatsuya Kitabayashi told Famitsu magazine this week, "which I think is nice because it leads me to believe that it's not just fans of the series trying this out."

 

"Especially during the quests, you had people go 'Awww' when their Felynes all got bowled over by a Bullfango and so on," added assistant producer Shintaro Kojima. "All the little actions and animations that go on in here are really exciting them."

Sales of Sony's PSP doubled week-on-week in Japan on the release of the chart-topping Capcom PSP game Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Ailu Village, which also launched in a bundle.

 

For the week ended August 29, the PSP line -- including the PSP-3000 and PSP Go -- sold 55,948 units, up from the previous week's 28,185. This week, the PSP-3000 individual sold 55,112 units, while the disc drive-less PSP Go sold 836.

 

The jump in sales comes in the same week as the launch Capcom's PSP game Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Ailu Village, which sold 256,000 units in its debut. The game launched as a standalone software package and also in a new PSP bundle.

 

Total PSP hardware sales were enough to topple the Nintendo DS from the top spot. Sales of the DS line, including DSi LL, DSi and DS Lite, were 39,992 for the week, down from 45,221 the week prior. Separately, the DSi LL sold 19,010, the DSi sold 17,057 and the DS Lite sold 3,925.

 

Leading home console sales during the week was PlayStation 3, which sold 25,053, down from the prior week's 29,443 units.

Monster Hunter Diary fought off some tough competition this week to retain the top spot in Media Create's weekly sales chart.

 

As passed along today at 4gamer, the Monster Hunter spinoff added another 88,405 units this week, bringing its grand total to 344,480 units.

 

Metroid M debuted on Wii at 45,398 this week. Also new this week were PSP's Bleach Heat the Soul 7, in 5th with 25,374 units, and the PS3 version of Square Enix's Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 budget re-release, in 9th with 9,162 units.
