The Last Story

Mistwalker boss Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, told us last year that his company was working on two projects: an iPhone game and a proper game. Could that second title be a Wii game?

 

Sure is. Nintendo sent out a press release overnight advertising the launch of a website for "The Last Story", a game we'd previously only heard about in trademark applications and financial results reporting.

 

There's precious little on the website except for a looping song and a log. Oh, and at the bottom, a bit that says "Nintendo/Mistwalker". Turns out this is indeed the game Sakaguchi had been hyping up last year, so...time to get excited? Maybe not excited, not after the company's solid-if-unspectacular Xbox 360 output (the not-good Blue Dragon and the quite-good Lost Odyssey), but...intrigued, definitely.

 

However it all pans out, you have to love the name. "Last Story" is about as close as you can get to "Final Fantasy" without getting emails from lawyers.

The Last Story, the upcoming Wii role-playing game, is the newest title from Final Fantasy designer Hironobu Sakaguchi. Previously, all that had been shown of the game is a logo. Until now.

 

Last Story game art has popped up online. Keep in mind, this is game art and not game graphics. The images are of what appears to be idyllic coast line. All is not peaceful as large canons jut out of a battery to keep mercenaries at bay.

 

The setting is Luli Island, which is actually a strategic sport for defense and transportation for an an entire empire. It is overseen by Earl Alganan, a feudal lord. Unlike his fellow aristocrats, Earl Alganan doesn't spend his days lounging about.

A few details about The Last Story

Meet The Last Story's hero and heroine... and their tiger?

The director (still unidentified) confirms that the characters depicted in the illustration are the main character and heroine.

 

"There is a wall between the two," he writes. Based off the director's comments, it seems that there's something keeping the two apart and unable to live their dreams together.

 

The director also writes that in The Last Story, there will be a number of other stories besides the story of these two characters. He mentions:

 

* The fear of speaking your true feelings

* The mystery of the father who went missing on boat

* The difficulty a leader has in making decisions

* The close accomplice who's turned to evil

* The foolish archaeologist's prison break

 

Concludes the director, "It's very important to merge battles and gameplay with story. Neither can stand on its own. Once both are connected together, the characters will rise up as "human" within the container of a game."

 

The game's producer (also unidentified) states, "The characters who appear in The Last Story all walk their own paths and have their own stories." He likens this to the real world, where no one has lived their lives following the same path as you.

 

The main part of The Last Story's story will focus on the main character, says the producer. However, he believes players will also have a chance to be touched by the stories other characters as well. "Once you've been touched by that, it's likely that you'll be able to feel their [the characters outside of the main character] true feelings, which you did not see before."

The Last Story’s Main Characters Unveiled

In the recent issue of Shonen Jump Magazine, Nintendo and Mistwalker introduced to us the main characters of the much awaited RPG Wii-exclusive, The Last Story.

 

The main hero of the game is named Elza. He’s a mercenary who came to Ruri Island and he dreamed of being a Knight.

 

In addition to Elza, Kanan is the heroine of the game. She wears a white dress and seems to be a noble.

Log Online To Play As Other Characters In The Last Story

While playing through The Last Story’s… uh… story you only control the Gathering power gifted mercenary Elza. The cooperative online mode lets players use other party members.

 

So, instead of protecting wizards, you can play as a wizard and cast spells. In an Iwata asks interview, Hironobu Sakaguchi joked people playing as mages may be asking other players why they aren’t protecting them. Online battles use a chain battle system where you can deal more and more damage by taking turns striking the enemy. Takuya Matsumoto thinks this system will up the affinity between players.

 

The battle royale mode, according to Sakaguchi, has a different atmosphere from the story mode for players to enjoy. Sakaguchi hopes players will show off their costumes during multiplayer fights.

 

The Last Story doesn’t have voice chat, but it does have a chat system. There are so many recorded lines in the Wii game, Mistwalker developed a system that lets players mash these together into custom quotes. Sakaguchi says in addition to conversations during event scenes, you’ll hear characters talk while you walk and before battle where the leader gives advice. There are many interesting lines to use, Sakaguchi says, which he wanted to let players use for online play. Matsumoto gave an example of Yuris repeatedly saying "father" and laughed after he mentioned it.
