Aswell as a new single-player campaign, the new title will also feature all the staples of traditional SOCOM titles, with a full-on 32-player multiplayer mode developed for the PS3 from the “ground up”.

Zipper Interactive's upcoming title SOCOM 4 is just one video game boasting the new PS3 Move motion-control system that is currently estimated to cost around $100.

When the PlayStation 2 introduced a network adapter enabling online play in 2002, the first "SOCOM" game was released to showcase this capability. The "SOCOM" franchise went on to be one of the PS2's biggest hits, selling more than 10 million copies, and Sony bought Zipper in 2006.

 

"SOCOM 4" is still early in development, with no price or release date set yet, but Sony has been showing it to fans and reporters in events across the country, including one in Seattle earlier this month."

At the end of the trailer for SOCOM 4, Sony's upcoming tactical third person shooter, a soldier in a massive padded suit, walks through an active war zone. It's a familiar sight to anyone who say 2009's Oscar winner for Best Picture, The Hurt Locker.

 

After talking with numerous developers at Zipper Interactive, the studio behind SOCOM 4, we have good reason to believe that this bomb squad element is related to the yet to be revealed multiplayer mode.

 

According to Travis Steiner, lead designer for SOCOM 4, The Hurt Locker coming out, and subsequently winning awards, was "a happy coincidence."

 

"We actually had the idea before [The Hurt Locker] came out," Steiner said.

 

SOCOM 4's other multiplayer modes include a deathmatch, a capture the flag style mode, and a strategic air strike mode. A bomb squad mode, possibly where teams cover their slow moving diffuser, would round out the play styles.

 

SOCOM 4 releases April 19 on the Playstation 3.

Releasing side-by-side with the standalone game on April 19, the Full Deployment Edition boxes up SOCOM 4 with a PlayStation Eye camera, a Move controller, a navigation controller, and the Sharp Shooter peripheral.
