Nikkei has some preliminary details on Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable system.

 

According to the paper, the new system will have 3G support. In Japan, the 3G service will be provided by NTT DoCoMo.

 

Using the 3G connection, gamers will be able to play online games and download software and movies. The service will not allow for phone calls.

 

The system will also have standard wireless LAN, of course. However, the 3G support will allow players to connect online wherever DoCoMo has wireless service. DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile carrier.

 

Separate from the wireless functionality, the paper reports that the new PSP will make use of an OLED touch screen. Regarding the system's internals, the paper reports that Sony has developed a new processor for handling high resolution visuals.

 

Pricing on the next generation PSP is currently TBA, according to the paper. The paper does not mention possible subscription fees associated with the 3G service, or the possibility of a Wi-Fi only model.

 

The paper also makes brief mention of the device that many are calling "Playstation Phone," a smart phone that includes game features. This will have button-based controls, the paper reports, making games control easier. The device will use Google's Android operating system and will allow users to access non-game software like video and scheduling software.

 

Sony is expected to take the veil off the new PSP system at a press conference on the 27th. The PlayStation cell phone device is expected to be unveiled next month.

NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android™ based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.

 

SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

Activision have confirmed that they will be bringing the Call of Duty franchise to Sony’s PSP successor the ‘NGP‘.

 

Acti’s Philip Early just made the announcement at Sony’s NGP reveal in Tokyo.

 

Early said that the dual analog sticks, social networking, front and back touch screens make anything possible for NGP. It is the future of portable gaming.

Hideo Kojima has since jumped onto the stage at the Playstation Meeting in Tokyo and although he assured that he had no announcements to make, Hideo showed a demo of PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots running on PS3. Kojima noted that the NGP allows for PS3 quality titles and as such the build he was showing was extremely close to the grown up PS3 version.

 

Hideo made reference to the dream of playing home console quality games on a portable outside. He then stated that this dream would become reality when he announces his next title at E3.

The PSP2—or the NGP, as its currently codenamed—may be powerful enough to play PlayStation 3-quality games. At today's coming out party for the next-generation PlayStation Portable, Sony and friends showed just that.

 

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida likened the power of the next PSP to that of its current home console, the four-year-old PS3. A handful of developers took the stage to illustrate the next-generation PlayStation Portable's power, playing an all-new Uncharted game designed for the new handheld, as well as a few games based on existing PlayStation 3 software.

 

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima showed a demonstration of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots running on the PSP2, looking almost as good as its console counterpart. "This game used the model data and environments from PS3, and it was exported directly to NGP," Kojima said, adding "On NGP, we can enjoy the same quality as the PS3."

 

Sega's Toshihiro Nagoshi also showed off a PSP2 version of Yakuza 4, extolling the ease of reusing PlayStation 3 assets, saying the Yakuza team created its NGP demo in a very short time frame.

 

Capcom's Jun Takeuchi showed two games running on the PSP2, a copy of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd to illustrate the system's backwards compatibility with downloadable PSP games and a demo version of Lost Planet, which looked close to its PlayStation 3 ancestor.

More Details on the CPU and GPU on Sony's PSP2

 

Sony's new NGP (next-gen portable) specifications have been released, mentioning the names of the processor and the the graphics processor that will be found in the device. The main bit of information has however been left out, the speeds and specifications of these processors. Whilst we may not be able to say exactly what the specifications of these components will be exactly, we can know what to expect. Here's what we know.

 

The ARM Cortex-A9 processor in the NGP has 4 cores and can handle up to 2GHz maximum according to the processor specifications. The processor specifications state that it uses a 32-bit architecture, which is used in 90% of mobile devices today. We can probably expect a processor speed of around 1.5GHz per core when the handheld is released, but with that said, it is important to note that the PSP's processor was based on the the R4000, and Sony managed to squeeze out more power from it than expected.

 

The graphics processor, SGX543MP4+ or PowerVR SGX543MP4+, is also a quad-core processing unit. The processor family, SGX543MP, has the several benefits over other processors and other features, a few listed below:

 

* Maintains the highest performance per mW of any embedded graphics core, a key benefit of POWERVR SGX (better battery life).

* No additional work for software developers; using one driver stack for all SGX cores means applications see a common SGX architecture via the standard APIs regardless of number of cores used (easy to develop for).

* Scalable GP-GPU compute power, which can be fully utilised through all Khronos APIs including OpenGL ES 2.x, OpenVG™ 1.x and OpenCL™.

* No additional CPU load when using multiple cores or loss of performance.

 

The speed at which the GPU is clocked will depend on Sony, the higher the frequency, the better the GPU. PowerVR give the following example "At 200MHz core frequency an SGX543MP4 (four cores) will deliver 133 million polygons per second and fill rates in excess of 4Gpixels/sec." That would make it only slightly better than the Xbox 1's GPU, but over 4x the power of the current PSP's, but we don't know what clock speed Sony will choose. Remember, this processor doesn't need to render to a big TV screen, so the lower clock speeds can still mean great graphics.

 

Also, the GPU is named SGX543MP4+, nobody knows what the "+" means, but it's very likely that the GPU will be heavily modified to make it unique to the NGPs architecture.

Epic: PSP2 '4 times as powerful as any other handheld'

Gears Of War creator Epic Games has claimed that the graphical processing power of PSP2 - codenamed NGP by Sony - is four times as powerful as any other handheld gaming device in existence.

 

Studio founder Tim Sweeney took to the stage in Tokyo earlier today to show off an Unreal Engine 3 tech demo on the device - an update version of the studio's Epic Citadel, which took place in a snowstorm.

 

It looked extremely impressive according to CVG's attendee - "another title that really did look like it should be running on a PS3" - and Sweeney explained just why.

 

"This is made possible by Sony's multi-core GPU," he said, "which is roughly four times as powerful as any portable we've previously seen."

 

Sweeney went on to demo an NGP version of Epic's Dungeon Defenders, which he said offered "console controls for movement and touch screen controls for interaction."

 

Sweeney finished his time on stage with more excited words about NGp. He concluded:

 

"We're very excited and think you'll be stunned at what's possible on Sony's next generation portable platform."
