US, July 1, 2009 - Square Enix's teaser game was identified in advance today via the expected source: leaked scans from a major Japanese publication. The offender this time is Weekly Jump, which managed to get the scoop on Hikari no Yon Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden, or Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden ("Gaiden" means "Side Story" -- but we're not sure if there's a need to translate it).

 

Final Fantasy Gaiden is a DS RPG in which players take control of a 14-year-old boy tasked with saving a princess. The game kicks off on your birthday as you're summoned by a King whose daughter has been kidnapped by a witch.

 

The game appears to be a standard menu-driven RPG, with parties of up to four consisting of characters that you encounter along your journey. Of particular note in the battle system is the lack of MP and the presence of a "Charge" command next to standard fight and item commands.

 

There appears to be a customization element to the game as well. Equipment changes to your characters result in changes to physical appearance.

 

Final Fantasy Gaiden hits Japan this Fall. You can get a first look at presumably two of the warriors of light at Square Enix's teaser site. Two more characters should end up appearing on the back of that dragon over the coming days.

 

Jump confirms that those characters, as many have guessed based off the teaser site artwork, are designed by Akihiko Yoshida, who previously worked on Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII.

 

Those who know their Final Fantasy history will recall that the Japanese version of Game Boy's Final Fantasy Adventure was released to Japan as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden. There doesn't appear to be any relation between between that title -- the first entry in the Mana series -- and the new game, as Jump refers to the new title as a completely original game.

Square Enix may be bringing its lovely looking Final Fantasy spin-off stateside, with the company trademarking The 4 Heroes Of Light, a still unofficially announced video game from the RPG publisher.

 

More than likely, that's the Western name (or part of the name) of Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden—a role-playing game that features classic Final Fantasy-style turn-based gameplay and a job-like "Crown System"—released on the Nintendo DS in Japan this past October. It's a game we're looking forward to, given that we named it among the best video game costume and character design from 2009. The character design work from Akihiko Yoshida, who contributed to Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII, among others, might be worth keeping this one on your list of future Nintendo DS purchases.

 

Square Enix has not yet announced a localized version of Hikari no 4 Senshi: Final Fantasy Gaiden, but there's not much the company won't export these days.
