Bohemia Interactive have just announced a free-to-play version of their outstanding war sim, Arma 2. It’s going to be totally free, but 100% Arma.

 

According to the developers “Arma 2: Free redefines the free-to-play battlefield with its truly unrivalled scale and gameplay possibilities. Arma 2: Free serves up almost everything offered by the original Arma 2 minus the campaign, HD graphics and support for user-made addons and mods.”

 

Despite the lack of HD graphics, ARMA 2: Free still looks like a handsome game. And even though mods aren’t supported, there’ll still be opportunity to create your own missions and scenarios to play through with up to 50 squad mates.

 

Most intriguing of all though, is that ARMA 2: free will be completely free. Not just free-to-play – there are no micro-transactions in sight. Now everyone will get a chance to sample the simulated delights of warfare.

Realistic military sim ARMA 2 has been updated to version 1.60 by developers Bohemia. The patch covers Operation Arrowhead, the British Armed Forces and Private Military Contractors DLC, the original Arma 2 and Arma 2: Free. Among the whopping 158 changes are a new anti-aliasing mode, new scripting commands, smoother multiplayer, netcode fixes and improved AI. More important fixes include, “AI no longer considering a car horn as a threat,” and “Dead body temperature was not saved.”

 

The Bohemians have also created a Christmas message for all their fans, which is so incredibly festive we’re about to explode in a shower of tinsel and fake snow.

New features: FXAA Anti-Aliasing mode, user-definable memory allocators, new scripting commands, new commandline options

Multiplayer is much smoother, no more warping, includes number of fixes, optimizations and improvements

Netcode, VON and dedicated server fixes plus configuration additions in place

Singleplayer received visual states smoothing and prediction (notable e.g. on distant units)

AI is improved, especially (but not only) in combat, AI has received numerous bug fixes

Aircraft & Helicopters simulation received slight improvements

ARMA 2, ARMA 2: OA, ARMA 2: EW campaigns and stand-alone missions received special treatment to get rid of most from really annoying bugs

official expansions & product combinations unified in way to allow easier operation of all distributions (separated installs/Steam/Desura) for build-in expansions manager

“There’s no doubt that the thrilling Day Z mod currently drives Arma 2 Combined Operations sales on Steam,” Bohemia Interactive’s Marek Španěl told Kotaku.

 

“Sales have increased almost fivefold from how they were before Day Z’s Alpha release.”

 

The ArmA II developer plans to work support for the mod into its next official patch.

 

“Considering the mod’s popularity we are committed to do some related work in the next Arma 2 update (1.61),” Španěl said.

 

“We are actively communicating about how we could best support the Arma 2 user community especially in multiplayer and Day Z players are right now a significant portion of people actively playing the game, so of course it’s high on our priority list to support it the best we can.”

 

The mod is actually led by Dean Hall, a New Zealand lad and one of Bohemia’s own staffers, who told games.on.net that ArmA 2 was the perfect base for the game he had in mind.

 

“You look at the ArmA engine – it is built for this. It was begging for this to be made,” he said.

 

“It’s got realistic ballistics, it handles large quantities of AI. Despite people’s criticisms of its netcode, it is very flexible and can handle problems. Particularly with the recent 1.6 patch, there’s a little bit of rubber banding, but that means it’s quite forgiving.

DayZ patch 1.5.8 adds sickness, temperature, “might cause havoc”

 

A major update for zombie apocalypse Arma II mod DayZ has launched, adding temperature and sickness systems and an array of under-the-hood updates and fixtures.

 

It’s now possible to become ill, which will cause your blood to slowly deplete until you take antibiotics – which are purposefully scarce. It’s not like bleeding in that you can’t die of it, but expect players to murder each other for precious medicine. As the developers put it in the patch notes: “it is the genesis of an idea, so please remember this might cause havoc.”

 

Sick players can infect others and tend to cough loudly, so if you needed another reason to avoid strangers, there it is.

 

Getting sick will also cause your temperature to drop, so building fires is important – but they now require wood to stay alight. Temperature effects are currently limited, but the camera will shake if you’re too cold.

 

It’s no longer possible to refill your water canteen from the sea, which should draw players towards inland lakes and reservoirs and away from the coast.

 

Disconnection saving will mean that you don’t have to wait for a save before quitting, which should reduce the amount of time we spend sitting in bushes waiting to leave the game. What it won’t do, however, is reduce the amount of time we spend sitting in bushes too terrified to move.

 

Context-sensitive interactions have been added to inventory items, which should make drinking, eating and reloading weapons more intuitive.
