Stone Giant DX11 Demo Drops

 

 

BitSquid and Fatshark are excited to announce that the Stone Giant demo, using the upcoming DirectX11 game engine BitSquid Tech, is available for immediate public download.

 

Key features of the BitSquid Tech (PC version) include:

 

* Highly parallel, data oriented design

* Support for all new DX11 GPUs, including the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 Series and AMD Radeon 5000 series

* Compute Shader 5 based depth of field effects

* Dynamic level of detail through displacement map tessellation

* Stereoscopic 3D support for NVIDIA 3dVision

 

PS3 and Xbox 360 support will be available in the fall of 2010.

 

“With advanced tessellation scenes, and high levels of geometry, Stone Giant will allow consumers to test the DX11-credentials of their new graphics cards”, said Tobias Persson, Founder and Senior Graphics Architect at BitSquid. “We believe that the great image fidelity seen in Stone Giant, made possible by the advanced features of DirectX 11, is something that we will come to expect in future games.”

Sharp Conjures Up World's First 3D Camera For Phones—and the Nintendo 3DS?

Designed for mobile devices such as phones, digital cameras or even netbooks, Sharp's 3D camera module will start mass production this year—meaning within the next couple of years we could be shooting image-popping HD 3D video.

 

While Sharp isn't known for phones in our parts, if you walk into any store in Japan you'll be bowled over by dozens of their candy-colored models. These 3D cameras could first be trialled in Japan, but if successful be licensed out to other manufacturers to tantalize us with eye-popping possibilities.

 

The obvious question, of course, is why you'd want a 3D camera on your phone in the first place? Fujifilm's FinePix Real 3D W1 digital camera hasn't exactly taken off (do you know anyone who's even considered buying one, let alone laid down 600 big ones for it?), so why should a 3D video camera on a phone?

 

Again, it seems like one of those situations where British explorer George Mallory's reply when asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest ("because it's there") seems suitable. Or, perhaps more people want to make their very own Avatars than I originally thought.

 

While Sharp's press release on the subject mentioned simply "digital cameras, mobile phones, and smartphones," we must remember that Nintendo's 3DS is rumored to be using Sharp's glasses-less parallax barrier technology in its displays. With the latest crop of DSis having dual cameras it's not entirely unfathomable that these 3D camera modules could be first seen in a certain portable gaming console—due for release sometime before April 2011.

 

However it's used, Sharp's 3D camera will be able to capture 720p video in 3D, an industry first for mobile devices. Does that sound like something you'd use often on your phone, or will it be relegated to the novelty folder of your apps?

Osaka, May 12, 2010 - (JCN Newswire) - Sharp Corporation has developed a 3D camera module for mobile devices capable of capturing high-definition (720p)(1) 3D video images, an industry first.(2) Sharp will start shipping samples in July. Mass production of these modules will begin within 2010.

 

3D images are composed of two views taken using two cameras that simultaneously capture separate images for the right and left eyes. Consequently, a 3D camera requires peripheral circuitry to apply image processing to the two images, for example, to adjust color or to correct positioning between the images from the two cameras. Manufacturers have thus been pursuing designs that reduce the size and weight of 3D cameras and seeking ways to shorten their development period.

 

The current 3D camera module developed by Sharp incorporates functions to process the image data output by the left and right cameras, including Color Synchronizing Processing to adjust color and brightness, Timing Synchronizing Processing to synchronize the timing of the video signals, and Optical Axis Control Processing to correct positioning. In addition, Fast Readout Technology rapidly transfers video data from the image sensor, enabling 3D images to be captured in high-resolution HD mode. Further, in developing this camera module, Sharp applied high-density mounting technology nurtured over long years of experience in camera module development to achieve a compact form. Embedding this camera module in mobile devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, and smartphones will contribute to the development of a wide range of new, innovative communications tools.

 

In the future, Sharp will be opening up new 3D markets based on 3D display technologies, including small/medium-size and large-size 3D LCDs, as well as on 3D input device technologies such as 3D camera module.

"LG Electronics" (LG) pristato naująjį "LX9500" televizorių. Jame naudojama „LED“ technologija, pilnas LED apšvietimas, 1 000 000 : 1 kontrasto santykis ir "TruMotion" 400 Hz (480 Hz) technologija, kuri suteikia puikią vaizdo kokybę, bei įgalina 3D vaizdą.

"LG LX9500" televizorius naudotojams, "Multi Picture Format" technologijos pagalba, leidžia lengvai kurti bei žiūrėti trimatį turinį naudojantis 3D fotoaparatais.

Kartu su televizoriumi pristatomi "AG-S100",- trimačio vaizdo akiniai, kurie suteikia dar gilesni vaizdą. Jie yra įkraunami per USB jungti ir suteikia galimybę iki 40 valandų nepertraukiamo žiūrėjimo.

 

LG kompanijos planai,- iki 2014 metų parduoti 80 mln. televizorių bei užimti 2010 metais 25% trimačių televizorių rinkos.

 

Artimiausiu metu LG pasiūlys įvairius trimačių televizorių modelius, nuo 42 iki 150 colių įstrižainės LED, plazminius, taip pat "Blu-ray" grotuvus, bei pirmąjį pasaulyje pilno HD vaizdo raiškos 3D projektorių.

Sony Develops a “Rollable” OTFT-driven OLED Display that can wrap around a Pencil

Sony Corporation (‘Sony’) announced today that it developed a super-flexible 80 μm-thick 4.1-in 121 ppi OTFT*1-driven full color OLED display which can be wrapped around a thin cylinder.

To create the display, Sony developed OTFTs with an original organic semiconductor material (a PXX derivative) with eight times*2 the current modulation of conventional OTFTs. This was achived due to the development of integration technologies of OTFTs and OLEDs on an ultra-thin 20 μm thick flexible substrate (a flexible on-panel gate-driver circuit with OTFTs which is able to get rid of convetinal rigid driver IC chips interfering roll-up of a display) and soft organic insulators for all the insulators in the integration cuircuit. By combining these technologies, Sony successfully demonstrated the world’s first OLED panel*3 which is capable of reproducing moving images while being repeatly rolled-up – around a cylinder with a radius of 4 mm – and stretched.

 

Sony will proceed with the development of the solution / print based process which manufactures display devices from organic materials that are easily dissolved in common solvents. This process requires fewer steps, and consumes materials and energy more efficiently – thus has a smaller environmental footprint – compared to the conventional high temperature vacuum semiconductor process which use inorganic, silicon materials.

 

Sony will continue to improve the performance and reliability of its flexible organic displays because the application of these developments are expected to yield thin, light-weight, durable and mobile devices with enhanced form-factor.

Scientists create 3D hologram generator, now with color

 

The good people over at the Institute for Creative Technologies at the University of Southern California have created the closest thing anyone has gotten to the "Olden day" technology of the Star Wars universe. Some of you may have seen this a little while ago, but they have recently added a haunting twist. Plus they have video footage!

 

 

How it works is pretty ingeniously simple: An angled mirror spins almost stupidly fast, while a projector above spins at the same speed shining down onto the mirror and changing its image depending on its position. This way you see a different image depending on where you look at the projection from, making it appear 3D. The video shows that they are also able to manipulate the image in real time, as well as project movie objects like the runner.

 

 

They have even been able to take this technology to the next step, to create a live conversation with one person's face as a hologram! Now, although they debuted this a few years ago, they have been refining it and updating it, making it better and better each day. The technology is now to the point where the cameras can understand the color of your face and adjust the hologram as such. So let me just leave you with a terrifying glimpse at the future...
