PS2 Emulation Already Up And Running?

Is your PlayStation 3 running firmware greater than 2.10? Chances are it is, but did you know that apparently it’s then already capable of running PS2 games then? “PS3 is capable of running PS2 games with 100 % software emulation but the performance and compatibility is really poor,” says lherre on GAF. “The emulator is present in every PS3 in the market (since 2.10 if I remember correctly) but is “deactivated”. “ He then goes on to suggest that the current PS3 firmware has some “interesting” files on it, which are presumably linked to his statement above.

This follows our news this morning that Sony have applied for a patent for a purely software-based solution to the PS2 emulation issue and ties in nicely with the job advert from last January for a software engineer at Sony Japan to work on exactly this. TheSixthAxis has also learnt this lunchtime that the bottleneck isn’t the Emotion Engine, which is already up and running, it’s the Graphics Synthesizer that’s causing the headaches. If Sony can crack this, then surely that would open the gates to downloadable PS2 games over the Store, as we suggested this morning.

Digital Foundry ~ PS3's media playback capabilities: officially awesome

In a Blog Tweet earlier today (6/29/09) the Digital Foundry team has posted some interesting news

for PS3 owners with 1080p HDTV's to keep an eye out for, that will be available tomorrow ~

"9:54 AM Jun 29th - Coders have managed to get true 1080p60 video running on PS3 via a normal Blu-ray movie disc. It defies all known BD specs, but it works."

9:56 AM Jun 29th - As prices fall, I reckon that PS3 will evolve into the de facto standard media playback device. The 1080p60 "hack" also works on AVCHD DVDs.

PS3's media playback capabilities: officially awesome. Will be releasing a stunning demo for everyone to try tomorrow. 1080p screen a must."

taigi visiem ps3 ir 1080p HDTV turetojam manau nereali naujiena tureti 1080p60 video :thumbsup4:

kai tik pasirodys demo duosim zinia visiem

Rumour: Full PS3 backwards compatibility only weeks away

Wednesday, 01 Jul 2009 11:51

[PlayStation 3]

PlayStation 3

As Sony's backwards compatibility patents make the rounds, a German website has supposedly gained comment from a Sony employee.

We were quick to point out that the unearthed Sony patents for the emulation of the PS2's CPU (Emotion Engine) on the PlayStation 3 did not imply full backwards compatibility. This was for the simple fact that the PS3 had already been software emulating the Emotion Engine since early-2007 when it was ripped out of European PS3s.

However, the fact remained that the patent was filed in December 2008 with a publication date of only last week.

This brings us to the German website Demon News, which claims to have gained comment from a Sony employee stating that full backwards compatibility is coming to US PS3's as a firmware update in the "next few weeks."

A European release date for the update has not yet been determined, but if there's any credibility in this news, we expect it drop at around the same time as the US update. Pinch of salt people, big pinch of frickin' salt.

The Sony (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 is starting to look shaky in an otherwise brilliant video game market. I'm not sure the console will survive another year.

Despite being the most impressive technical specimen on the market, with unique Blu-Ray playback features and custom-built IBM (NYSE: IBM) chips that also can power supercomputers, the PS3 has failed to impress a nitpicky gaming market. Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox 360 and the Nintendo (OTC BB: NTDOY.PK) Wii keep running circles around the PS3, saleswise. The system's unique hardware also makes it harder and more expensive for game designers to bring their wares to the PS3.

The PS3 was always meant to last for a very long time. It took about five years for Sony to start making a profit from the PlayStation 2, and the PS3 was supposed to follow the same path as a media-center powerhouse with gaming roots. Three years into the system's life cycle, Sony's gaming division is still bleeding cash every quarter. And now the industry itself is starting to lose patience with Sony.

"Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation," says Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI) CEO Bobby Kotick. "They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [of game sales for the PS3] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony."

Ouch. Kotick is wielding a big stick, because Activision has leapfrogged Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) to become the biggest video game producer in the world. And he ain't speaking softly to Sony.

Reports of new upgrades to the PS3 ecosystem are coming in, but they seem to indicate the wrong kind of changes. The systems are getting bigger and stronger, but not necessarily cheaper. Sony couldn't have predicted the global economic downturn any more than you, I, or the competition -- but the company sure could have handled it better.

Unless the PS3 finds some way to entice more consumers to pay up for its classy but expensive wares, Kotick might take Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Call Of Duty, and a host of other crowd-pleasing franchises -- and go home. And if the biggest producer can't afford to make PS3 titles, the smaller players could soon follow suit. By the time Take-Two Interactive (Nasdaq: TTWO) announces an Xbox-only Grand Theft Auto title, it'll be too late.

The time to act is now, Sony. Give me cheaper systems or give me death. For your sake, I hope that the rumors of a less expensive PS3 Slim model are correct.

Sony Patents A Motion Control System That Uses Ordinary Objects As Controllers

Nuotrauka

We saw Sony unveil a LED wand during their E3 press conference. The device in conjunction with an EyeToy camera brought motion control to the PlayStation 3. In addition to that Sony developed another motion control system that uses everyday objects.

A recently published patent from Sony details a system where a camera can dynamically map an object — any real world object — for use in a video game. The illustration has a U shape block, but the patent outlines other example objects “include items such as coffee mugs, drinking glasses, books, bottles, etc.” While these are given as examples the object mapping system is not limited to those objects, it can identify any three dimensional object.

NuotraukaNuotrauka

Before using an object like the U shaped block the camera captures has to capture it. Figure 2 explains the system where players show the object, rotate it, and save a profile for it in a file. The system then analyzes movements and translates them into in game actions.

Here are some examples of how Sony could use this technology. The “virtual world light sword” in figure 3B is particularly interesting. When a player holds the U-shaped block up the sword is “on” and the blade will be extended in the game. When the U-shaped block is upside down the sword is “off”.

NuotraukaNuotrauka

Nuotraukahttp://www.ipix.lt/images/42478026.jpg[/img]

The system looks like Microsoft’s Project Natal, but instead of driving an imaginary steering wheel players can use an everyday item like a plate.

Gaikai On-Demand Gaming Possible on PS3

Posted on July 4, 2009 by Shak

Gaikai is a new service from David Perry which promises on-demand gaming through your web browser. The technology is currently in closed beta, but looks to be very promising.

When asked whether this service would be accessible from the PS3 web browser, David Perry replied:

"YES, it's PERFECT for low memory or non-3D environments as we are just streaming video. So yes, if Sony wanted, we could make this happen. I've not had the time to get into that discussion with them yet."

If this is true, it gives everyone yet another reason to have a web browser as standard on their console. Also if you view the video below, you'll notice that this technology isn't only limited to PC games.

visai idomu butu jei sony prigriebtu sita dalyka, gal tai ir ne OnLive, bet viska gali zaist tiesiai is internet browserio.

Blu-ray Sales Booming

Numbers released this week by the British Video Association show that over 3.1m Blu-ray discs have sold so far in 2009, this represents a whopping 231% increase on the same period last year. Hannah Conduct, Marketing Manager at the British Video Association says:

“The continuing success of Blu-ray is testament to the growth of consumer confidence in the high definition format. There are now almost 1500 Blu-ray releases in the market covering a breadth of titles. Seeing is believing with Blu-ray and the figures show that once consumers have experienced the format, they continue to spend their money on the product.”

The increase in Blu-ray sales is particularly impressive when set against the backdrop of the poor UK economy, especially when you take into account there are well over 900 fewer retail outlets due to the closure of Woolworths, Zavvi and probably countless independent entertainment stores.

During the same period sales of DVDs fared less well with sales falling by 10% as more and more people see the benefit of the hi-def format. Personally I would expect the pattern of falling DVD sales and increasing Blu-ray saless to continue, obviously as more PS3’s are sold and prices of standalone Blu-ray players are also continuing to fall all the time, further increasing the install base.

So far it appears Sony’s trojan horse plan is working.

SONY TEAMS WITH TAIWAN TO NURTURE PS3 GAME INDUSTRY

TAIPEI, Jun 30, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will cooperate with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs to nurture and support a local industry of software developers for the Sony PlayStation 3 game console.

The agreement was announced at a joint press conference held by the ministry to outline its policy of support.

SCE will introduce PS3 game producers from Japan and the West to software developers in Taiwan, and will help these companies with technical guidance and the transfer of technologies from the Japanese and Western software developers.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to subsidize 40 per cent of the cost of software development and technology licensing that the Taiwanese firms incur.

SCE will also help educate game developers by sponsoring lectures in cooperation with Tatung University.

Through this support, the Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) subsidiary aims to firmly establish a base for the PS3 game market in Taiwan and to develop games geared toward mainland China.

CodecSys CE-10 H.264 Encoder (English Version) for Sony PS3 Available

Last month the Japanese version of the CodecSys CE-10 H.264 Encoder for PS3 was released and now the English version is available too.

The CE-10 software gets installed on a PC, but allows users to access the power of the PS3 via OtherOS as a way of accelerating video encoding.

Affordable, Broadcast Quality, Near Real-Time H.264 Encoder for Sony PS3

LOVELAND, COLORADO, 1 July 2009 - Fixstars and Broadcast International today announce the immediate availability of CodecSys CE-10 series, a near real-time, broadcast quality H.264 encoder which runs on the Sony PLAYSTATION® 3 platform. The CodecSys CE-10 takes advantage of the readily available, inexpensive Sony PS3 for its processing engine, making it the most accessible, near real-time product in the HD encoding realm.

"The launch of the CodecSys CE-10 for PS3 marks a new era of professional level H.264 encoding at an affordable, consumer price,” said Satoshi Miki, CEO of Fixstars Corporation. "This software based encoding system frees the video workstation from the burden of what is otherwise an intensive process. The user may continue to edit uninterrupted, while the PS3 produces high quality HD output in near real-time."

Connected to a PC via a gigabit ethernet, the PS3 performs as an external, dedicated video encoder. All encoding is handled by the PS3 which runs an embedded version of Yellow Dog Linux entirely from ROM, thus shifting the CPU-intensive processing away from the workstation.

Unlike hardware-based encoders on the market, the software-based CodecSys CE-10 is easily updated, delivering improvements to increase encoding speeds, image quality and other features. Reduce hardware costs by implementing updates rather than replacing out-of-date hardware.

"The CodecSys CE-10 addresses the biggest technology challenge we now face--video bandwidth," said Rod Tiede, president and CEO of Broadcast International, "The demand and popularity of video is growing at an amazing rate for both personal and businesses applications and the CodecSys CE-10 will significantly improve the production of video in all applications."

CodecSys CE-10 Personal:

- H.264 software encoder with support for 1080i/p full HD.

- Max bitrate 15Mbps, Blu-ray standard compliant.

- Licensed for personal use only.

- $199.00 USD

CodecSys CE-10 Professional

- H.264 software encoder support 1080i/p full HD.

- Max bitrate 150Mbps, Blu-ray standard compliant.

- Licensed for commercial use.

BioWare ‘really pumped’ to work on PS3

By Wesley Yin-Poole - 08/07/2009 - 10:22am GMT

Zeschuk: ‘It's not like we have anything against Sony’. ‘Totally behind’ PS3.

Dragon Age: Origins screenshot

BioWare, the developer of Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is “really pumped” to be working on the PS3 with the upcoming multiplatform fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Origins.

The game is BioWare’s first for Sony’s console. Last generation, the EA-owned developer made only a single PS2 game: third-person shooter MDK2.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, vice president of entertainment and miscellaneous at BioWare, and vice president of Electronic Arts, Greg Zeschuk, said that the team’s found developing on the PS3 “exciting”, and even has its advantages.

“It's been interesting,” he said. “It's actually been quite good. We discovered a couple of things we did were pretty beneficial. We have multiple threads going for the game and it looks really great on the PS3. You can just throw them on all different processors, for example.

“It's new. Because we already had experience on 360, that kind of got ahead a little bit, but now we pretty much caught up. Actually it was very exciting. People on the team were really pumped to work on it. They were like, wow. We have a lot of people that like doing new stuff and trying new things, and they were like, wow another platform, can't wait! It's been good.”

Zeschuk added that BioWare’s previous commitment to Microsoft’s consoles was a result of having worked with the US company for five years.

“It's going to be exciting having a PS3 game out finally. We only did one PS2 game – MDK2 on PS2. It's not like we have anything against Sony by any stretch. It's just that from a publishing perspective we worked with Microsoft for five years - that made it so easy to focus on Xbox and we didn't have to worry about the PlayStation platforms. But now, since being part of EA, it just makes complete sense. It's something we're totally behind.”

Some developers have criticised the PS3 for being too complicated and difficult to develop for. During the first 18 months of the console’s life gamers suffered from poor-quality ports of multi-platform games, especially on the graphics front.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s current Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer admitted earlier this year that the PS3 was “hard to program for”, but said it was a deliberate move in order to ensure that “the hardware has a lot more to offer” farther down the console’s life cycle.

Zeschuk, however, said BioWare was not only getting to grips with the console, but discovering its advantages.

“It's not bad actually,” he said when asked about development struggle on the platform. “It's funny, we had extra graphic memory left over on the PS3. We were like, wow! So we actually started putting some of the audio bits in there and stuff. It's a function of effort. Overall, pretty happy with how it's turning out.”

Will the graphics be exactly the same on both consoles? “Oh yeah. I can't say absolutely for sure. There will be elements that will be better... the actual graphics hardware is different on them, so one may be brighter than the other, but definitely the content will be absolutely the same.”

So there you have it PS3-owners. Looks like BioWare’s first effort on your console won’t be a substandard port.
