Japan’s Best Selling Console in 2010 is….

Japan’s best selling console for 2010′s entirety has been revealed.

 

The PSP was the best selling console in Japan over the last fiscal year. Andriasang reports that Sony’s handheld sold 2,640,499 to beat the Nintendo DS and consequently top the charts.

PSP starts streaming Music Unlimited on April 14th

What started as loose-lipped tattle is now official: the PSP will get a taste of Sony's Music Unlimited streaming music service starting on April 14th. The service, tortuously entitled "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" by Sony, requires a PlayStation Network ID to access all that digital audio. Once setup, Sony promises a "synchronized music experience" across your PSP, PS3, PC, and other network-enabled Sony devices like Bravia TVs and Blu-ray players -- a claim backed by a cloud-based catalog of some seven million tracks supported by a "music sync" functionality that will automatically organize your Music Unlimited library after perusing the local files and playlists found in your existing media player (yes, iTunes is supported). PSP Getting Price Cut in Europe

The PSP will supposedly receive a price cut in Europe starting from today.

 

That’s according to Bloomberg who state the new RRP for the handheld will be priced at €129.99.

 

The previous price for the device was €169.99.

 

Satoshi Fukuoka of SCEJ said “The price cut is aimed at increasing adoption of the player in Europe.”

Sony: “NGP Is The Real Reason For PS3 Cloud Saves”

If you really thought that Sony would offer cloud game saves without an ulterior motive behind it, well then you’d be completely wrong. Sure its a nice perk but when you honestly sit down and really think about it, what’s the point? It’s not like a game save file is as big as a game install file (which unfortunately still exists) so where’s the benefit of storing these files remotely especially if what we’re talking about is just a few measly megabytes. After speaking to one of our sources at Sony, it seems that the electronics giant may have something very special brewing for E3, an announcement that will make the NGP simply irresistible when it lands on shelves.

 

Here at the site one thing that would always come up whenever we discussed Sony’s Next Generation Portable was that with so much power inside of the unit, how would it not cannibalize sales for it’s bigger brother console the PS3? With the ability to pump out HD visuals, combined with strong first part support right out of the gate, why would gamers want to buy the same game twice? We questioned it, and Sony questioned it too, but here is the secret on how that scenario will be avoided. The cloud.

 

Prepare to have your mind blown.

 

Try to imagine this scenario (as presented by our source), you’re playing Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception (hypothetical title) at home right before you have to make a trip or commute somewhere. You save your game and it instantly saves to the cloud. You get on the Bus, Train, whatever it is you commute on and you boot up your NGP. Your NGP connects to the cloud; you load up the same title and pick up exactly where you left off, in an almost Netflix-like fashion. How’s that sound? Well that’s exactly what Sony is going for. Think about the (ahead of it’s time) remote-play feature from the original PSP except this time, because of such great hardware and services, it’s finally done right.

 

So you may be saying to yourself,”wait, does that still involve me buying the game twice?” Well the answer to that is still up in the air, as Sony is toying with the idea of pricing structure, and may lean in the direction of bundles similar to what’s going on with Blu-Rays. Kind of like where you have the option to buy just the movie or a bundle where you get it on different formats for only a few bucks more.

 

As far as how we would connect to that cloud will be a whole other story but it may provide insight as to how much this thing will actually cost. When we pressed the price issue, the exact words the Sony source told me was, “well we don’t have any cell [phone] towers, and so SOMEONE is going to have to give us service.” He wouldn’t talk price (at all), but when I really pressed him about it, it’s seems like we can expect the NGP to be available subsidized with some sort of 3G data plan. And if you look around at what’s going on with Sony Ericsson and the current exclusivity with the Xperia X10 and PlayStation Suite Phone the Xperia Play it looks like Verizon will be the main 3G-service provider for the portable (in the US).

 

It’s some pretty juicy stuff and only a tip of the iceberg of what’s to come, as if we didn’t already have enough reason to lust over Sony’s next handheld. To the cloud!

PS3 Rockets Up Bestseller List Due to $50 Promo

 

The PlayStation 3 is the most value-packed console ever. The future-proof design features Blu-ray, a Cell processor and a built-in HDD. But you already knew that. New Sony PlayStation 3 CECH-3001A hits the FCC

Today, a mysterious FCC filing by Sony revealed a new version of the Sony PlayStation 3 with the model numbers CECH-3001A/B. This appears to be a new generation of the PlayStation 3, given that the original PS3 and PS3 Slim were part of the CECH 2xxx series.

 

FCC filings reveal little about the device, other than the label location picture, above. Test reports do confirm the presence of Bluetooth and WiFi models, as well as a hard disk drive.

 

The CECH-3001 PS3 model number has appeared online as early as December 2010. However, Sony has not provide any information about the new device, or how it will differ from older PS3 models.

 

This one is still developing. We’ll provide updates as we learn more.

Sony considering cross-game voice and video chat for PlayStation Network reboot

 

With PlayStation Network down from an illegal intrusion, Sony is currently working night and day to rebuild the PlayStation Network. Meanwhile, impatient gamers have been without online gaming for a week. Yesterday, a PlayStation Store update was missed. So is Sony doing something to compensate gamers? Possibly.

 

Asked if Sony would provide a price drop, free PlayStation Plus trial, alternative payment methods, ability to change a PlayStation Network ID, or a few of PlayStation Network’s most oft-demanded features in lieu of the outage, Sony Computer Entertainment responded on Engadget (take note of answer #5):

 

First we apologize for the lack of communication regarding the current situation which may have affected our registered users on the PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We expect to provide more updates on the outrage and current status of the network development. I cannot say much regarding specifics on the matter but for your question:

 

1) There are no plans for a price drop on PlayStation products (i.e. PS2, PS3 and PSP hardware)

2) I will look into this as PlayStation®Plus has been growing in the interest of users.

3) We are currently looking into this as we rebuild the network.

4) This feature is available but not in all regions as of yet. It was expected to be updated in European regions in the following weeks with a North American release to follow shortly after.

5) As we are rebuilding the network, we are taking into consideration in implementing features such as cross game chat and in-game video chat to name a few. I cannot confirm any new features at this time but expect a massive update when the network is restored.

Report: Sony Providing New PlayStation 3 SDKs Before PSN Comes Online

 

As downtime for Sony's PlayStation Network lingers on, Gamasutra sources report that Sony has asked some developers to install new SDKs on their PlayStation 3 devkits prior to the service coming back online.

 

These new SDKs will provide new security features in response to the massive data leak earlier this week, which compromised user information including passwords, addresses, and perhaps even credit card information.

 

In a Sony statement following the security breach, the company said it will start "re-building" its system to protect PSN from future incidents.

 

Although the service has been offline since April 20, Gamasutra sources said they have received no information regarding when PSN will be back up and running.
