Sony execs talk PlayStation Move expectations, PS4 details

The PlayStation Move is now less than a month from hitting stores shelves, and it looks like some Sony execs are already busy starting to manage expectations. Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Ray Maguire chose to compare the Move's launch to that of the EyeToy for the PlayStation 2, saying that "exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it's a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it." Maguire further went on to say he's "not particularly" expecting "massive" day one sales, but that he expects sales to grow as word of mouth spreads. In other PlayStation news, Sony's Kaz Hirai seems to have effectively ruled out a download-only future for the eventual PS4 in an interview with MCV, with him saying that a "digital future is over ten years away." Hirai then went on to note that "we do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope," and that "here's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium." No word if that also applies to Sony's future handhelds as well.

Sony Gets Federal Court to Temporarily Block Sale Of PS3 Modchips

Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia was granted a temporary injunction by the nation's Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips.

 

The injunction means that until August 31, none of the modchip's Australian distributors will be able to import, sell or otherwise offload the devices. What's more, they have to take all the stock they already have and leave them with Sony's solicitors until the August 31 deadline passes.

 

Sony has from now until August 31 to convince the courts that the injunction becomes a more permanent arrangement (temporary injunctions are designed to maintain the "status quo" until a matter can be settled). If they succeed, it'll mean the end of legal sales of the device in Australia, but if they fail, then once September 1 rolls around the chips will be able to go on sale.

 

This is an interesting development, since a 2005 Supreme Court ruling determined that the sale of modchips was legal in Australia (though Nintendo was recently successful in banning the R4).

Sony opens countdown website for new game

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has opened a countdown site for a new game.

 

The teaser page, which is loading slowly at the moment, apparently features a man playing with a yarn. Furthermore, the word “amimono,” which is Japanese for knitting, appears on both the URL and keyword for the page.

 

Expect to hear more about this project soon with the Tokyo Game Show slated for next month.

Sony to help devs build 3D games

New 3D Technology Center at Sony Pictures Studios in California offered out to third parties

 

3D has become crucial to Sony’s global plans, and the firm has offered to help the games industry keep pace.

 

SCE CEO Kaz Hirai says PlayStation plays a vital role in the 3D masterplan, which involves almost every part of Sony’s business.

 

In February, the company set up a 3D Technology Center at Sony Pictures Studios in California. And Hirai says game developers can utilise this to help them create 3D products.

 

“The 3D Technology Center is not just for Sony,” said Hirai.

 

“We will share the expertise that we have developed over the years. This is to make sure we are playing our part to drive mass adoption of 3D, not just for Sony but as an industry.”

Sony Shares Tokyo Game Show Lineup

Sony announced its Tokyo Game Show lineup today. The company will have a large lineup of over 50 titles in its booth this year. Typical of a first party, it will be showing both its own games and games from third party publishers.

 

In past TGS showings, Sony has split its booth into zones depending on platform. This will be the case this year as well, only the zone count has increased. Zones this year include a section for PS3 games, a section for PSP games, a section for PS3 games that are Move compatible, a section for PS3 games that are 3D compatible, and a section for PS3 games that are both 3D and Move compatible.

 

Here's what playable titles visitors will find in the various zones, current to 9/2. All the titles listed below have previously been announced. Sony also says to expect one unannounced PS3 game and one unannounced PSP game to be playable.

 

In the PlayStation 3 zone, the company will have the following playable:

According to the teaser site, Sony will also be showing games off on a large 3D monitor. The site also promises streaming of various stage shows, to begin at 13:00 on September 16.
