After launching in 2006 with models equipped with 60GB and 20GB hard drives, the PlayStation 3 has seen its storage capacity balloon. The console, which has also lost PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility and the ability to run Linux, is currently available with either a 120GB or a 250GB drive. The space can be used for game installs and downloadable titles, or for video, music, and photo files in its capacity as a media server.

 

Now, if a report on British site CVG is to believed, Sony is readying a model which will drastically increase the console's storage capacity. Citing unnamed sources, the site says Sony will phase out the 120GB PS3 later this and introduce a new model with a massive 500GB hard drive.

 

Sony may be increasing the PS3's hard drive size yet again.

 

The new PS3 will also reportedly have improved wi-fi upgraded to the 802.11n wireless standard. Current models use the slower 802.11 b/g standard, which is also used by the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 has no built-in wireless, with external 802.11n and 802.11 b/g adapters sold separately. However, the prematurely outed new slimline Xbox 360 appears to have built-in wi-fi, the standard of which is unclear.

 

CVG's report comes shortly after tech blog Engadget discovered Sony has registered two new PS3 models with the Federal Communications Commission. It also may be a bit moot to the tech-savvy, as the console is designed to allow consumers to remove and upgrade its hard drive with a standard laptop drive.

Five surprises from the Sony press conference

You know what they say, “Expect the unexpected”. That’s why I’ve thought up some things that would surprise me if they came out of Sony’s E3 conference later today, and am now training myself to expect them, despite their apparent unlikelihood. This way, when I’m watching the conference I won’t have any seizures or accidents in my pants or anything. Instead I’ll be all like, aha, I sort of expected that, yet I am also pleasantly surprised. Bravo!

This is a surprise that a lot of folk have been expecting for some time now, so I’m actually not sure whether I’ll be more surprised to see it or not to see it. Either way, a PSP2 related surprise must be in store.

 

PlayStation Network still completely free

There’s been so much talk about Sony introducing some kind of premium service to the PSN that I guess many gamers would be surprised if Sony just carried on with the same perfectly sensible policy of online play being completely free. It is, after all, one of the PS3’s selling points. Surely there’s more pressure on Microsoft to make Live free rather than for Sony to start charging.

 

Gran Turismo 5 gets a firm release date

Now, this really would surprise me. I’ve got this theory that Polyphony hasn’t even started making it yet and that Kazunori Yamuchi keeps saying it could be released any time now as some sort of dare. Driving his collection of sports cars really fast just isn’t giving him the adrenaline fix he needs any more, so he gets his kicks telling enormous lies to the world instead. Maybe.

 

Patch to add PS2 backwards compatibility to all PS3s

Yeah, so a service for downloading PS2 games seems much more likely but I’m not ruling out the possibility of a patch to allow PS2 games to be playable off their original discs. It can’t be that hard to do and it just seems to me that it would make good marketing sense to be able to boast of the PS3 being compatible with a total of, what, 4,000 games? It’s got to be something like that.

 

Twisted Metal

There’s been a lot of talk about whether this is or isn’t coming soon, and about whether David Jaffe is or isn’t involved. For what it’s worth I think it will be announced at E3, but I don’t care whether David Jaffe’s doing it or not. Frankly, the man needs to start making proper announcements, or just shut the hell up for a bit.

Amazon france has revealed 3 upcoming PS3 exlusives for 2010:

Yesterday, several European regions listed cross-game chat as an upcoming feature for the incoming PlayStation Plus service, which will cost $50 for a year subscription. This was a moment of great excitement for PS3 owners, but Sony was quick to remove the feature and deny it'll be part of the cross-game chat, though they haven't outright denied if it would come in firmware 3.40, yet.

 

Sony: "Cross-game voice chat was not announced as part of PlayStation Plus. The new offering provides subscribers features such as frequent discounts on PlayStation Store content, free and exclusive access to select games, full game trials, early invitations to select betas of popular games, and new functionality such as content downloads and updates which will automatically be "pushed" to the PS3 system even when consumers are not using their system. Content will vary by region.

 

Sony has only continued to say the service will not be in PlayStation Plus, but they don't deny it being in firmware 3.40. Hope is there it'll come before the end of the month, but whether it will or not can't be determined at this time. With only a week left before the firmware update is set to go, we only have a short wait before us. Firmware 3.40 launches on June 22nd, with PlayStation Plus going live on June 29th.

 

The full features of PlayStation Plus, which will vary region by region:

 

* Full game trial- Members will have access to full versions of designated PS3® and PlayStation Network titles including PS one® Archives (PS one® Classics). The titles on offer will be available for download on PlayStation Store for a stated period and change every month. Members will be able to play the full version of the game for a designated period and even after the trial period expires, users will be able to continue playing the game by purchasing the game on-line.

* Games - Member will be able to play the full version of designated PS3 downloadable and PlayStation Network titles including PS one Archives (PS one Classics) and minis with no limit of time as long as membership is effective. These games will become available exclusively for PlayStation Plus members at no extra cost.

* Special content - Content such as avatars and custom themes many of which are exclusive will become available for PlayStation Plus members at no extra cost.

* Discounts - Members will have access to exclusive discounts on designated PS3 and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) titles. Titles will vary every month on PlayStation Store.

* Early access - Members will have early access to designated new game beta trials, game demos and video content prior to public distribution.

* Automatic content downloads and updates - PS3 will automatically download and install designated game demos and game updates and also download the system software update data. PS3 will automatically start up at a designated time to download content and will turn off after the download has completed.

Report: PlayStation 3 May Also Get Hulu

 

 

Reports of Hulu's expansion to consoles appear not to have been greatly exaggerated. The TV and movie service, already pegged to come to the Xbox 360 and iPad, may also be on its way to the PlayStation 3.

 

According to a report from Bloomberg, Hulu, which carries programming from NBC Universal, Fox and ABC, is coming as a paid subscription service to the PlayStation Network. The LA Times had previously reported that Hulu's subscription plan would carry a $9.95 monthly fee.

 

Bloomberg's report on Hulu's supposed plans will give PS3 owners "on-demand access to current prime-time television shows." An announcement on the matter is reportedly due next week.

Video editing with the Sony PS3

The brand new Sony PS3 firmware that was released tonight (Mon 28 Jun 2010) comes with a built-in video editor. It is able to edit in real time HDV, AVCHD, and [almost] dSLR h.264 footage.

 

First, you have to copy your video files in the internal hard drive. If you already have video files there, you will have to re-copy them, because the files must be copied with firmware 3.40 or newer (this firmware copies more needed attributes).

 

HDV and AVCHD files will work out of the box. If your footage is dSLR/digicam MOV h.264 files, then you must pass them via a re-wrapping utility, to make them MP4. Take note, this is NOT a re-encoding. Re-wrapping simply changes the container from MOV to MP4, without re-encoding. It’s done in mere seconds, and it has zero loss in quality. I usually do mine with Quicktime Pro, or MPEG Streamclip, or a DOS script utilizing ffmpeg, or mp4box and mencoder.

Unfortunately, we’re not given the opportunity to export to HD. All uploads are in 640×480 resolution, at 29.97 fps. For widescreen videos, the 1.333 aspect ratio is attached to the VGA resolution. The PS3 and the VLC players support that aspect ratio flag, and your widescreen-edited video will playback in widescreen, but Quicktime won’t recognize the flags and it will display your video squashed.

Anyways, if Sony gives us the ability to export at different resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and possibly add the [dreaded] support for the MOV container and the Canon audio dSLR/digicam format, they’ll have a winner. But even as it is now, it can really be of much help to people who have a camera and a PS3 but no video editor on their PC, or their video editor is too slow for their camera’s format. The PS3’s CELL CPUs really fly in video editing.
