Sony Talks 3D Firmware, PlayStation Move

April 22, 2010 - At the 3D Gaming Summit in Los Angeles, Sony Platform Research Manager David Coombes talked about the PS3's upcoming firmware update, how it will affect the console's performance, and what's new with the PlayStation Move.

In regards to the PS3's 3D-enabling firmware update, Coombes said it will come in two waves; the first update hitting this Summer will allow the console to display 3D games, while 3D Blu-ray support will come "a short time after." Sony reiterated that the games being offered to UK customers who purchase a 3D-read Sony Bravia display, which includes PAIN, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, and others, may not be the same as those offered in the United States. Coombes also spoke about 3D on the PlayStation 3 from a development perspective. Most notably, he discussed that the 3D experience in PS3 games would always be implemented by developers, not by an automatic conversion process in the PlayStation 3 itself. While TV manufacturers may offer a conversion feature, the PS3 itself will not. In other words, once the console gets its firmware update, that doesn't mean you'll be able to play any game in pseudo-3D. You'll have to wait for the developers to produce an actual 3D version of the game.

He also addressed concerns that 3D images will cut the console's processing power in half, saying developers can actually find non-3D information that can be shared between left and right images. Shadows, for example, are generally flat. The PS3's GPU can share that data between left and right eye images, instead of having to render it twice.

Similarly, games that are already capable of running in split-screen will transition to 3D more easily, since they're already designed to display two simultaneous images. By finding ways to optimize 3D, developers won't necessarily have to sacrifice detail or framerates.

Coombes also announced that 3D PS3 games will be compatible with any and all 3D HDTVs that support the HDMI 1.4 standard. The PS3 will automatically scale 3D images to fit whatever screen you're playing on, while still making it a comfortable viewing experience.

The 3D software development kit has been available to developers since January, the fruits of which we expect to see at this year's E3.

Lastly, Coombes demoed the PlayStation Move, and how it pertains to 3D control. In addition to simply tracking the Move controller itself, however, Coombes also demonstrated the facial recognition and head-tracking capabilities of the PlayStation Eye, as part of the Move system. The demo included an on-screen mechanical puppet that was mapped to his body, as well as his arms via the PlayStation Move. Head and body-tracking meant the puppet's entire torso was matching the position of his body. The purposed benefit of combining the Move's controller tracking technology with the PlayStation Eye's head and body tracking, Coombes said, was Johnny Chung-style perspective tracking - where moving your head changes your perspective of the world inside your TV, giving the illusion of 3D.

Coombes also applied these concepts to a third-person perspective of the puppet, where his actions were being mapped onto a 3D character within the game. Moving his body and arms caused the character to move and reach into the game-world. This was all just a tech demo, but still an encouraging example of what developers could pull off in the future.

SCEA ANNOUNCES NEW VERSION OF MEDIA GO

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced a new version of Media Go, the free PC application that enables PlayStation Network users to download content from PlayStation Store to their PC, then to their PSP (PlayStation Portable) system. Sony Sued For Removal Of Linux Support From PS3 - PAGALIAU!!!

April 28, 2010 - A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony Computer Entertainment America for the removal of the 'Other OS' feature from the PlayStation 3.

In March, Sony released firmware v3.21 that disabled the feature, disallowing users from installing the Linux operating system. The update was not mandatory; however those who chose not to download it were cut off from a number of other features, one of which included signing in to PlayStation Network.

Sony launches official 'Protection Plan' for PS3 and PSP

While the PS3 hasn't been plagued by RROD levels of system failures, it is still vulnerable to its own share of problems, most notably the "yellow light of death." Should your system experience an irrecoverable crash after Sony's official one-year warranty, there isn't much you can do except send the system to Sony for repair -- a process that carries a hefty price tag of $150, plus shipping costs.

Sony has announced an alternative solution: the PlayStation Protection Plan, which allows new PS3 and PSP owners currently covered by the standard warranty to purchase additional coverage. According to SCEA's VP of operations, Glenn Nash, the PlayStation Protection Plan was created for "consumers looking for added peace of mind ... interested in an extended service plan that's backed directly by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise." However, while Nash touts Sony's reputation for "the highest quality in engineering and design," Sony is charging a sizable sum for the extended warranty to protect all that high-quality engineering -- especially compared to Microsoft's no-cost three-year warranty for RROD-related damages.

A one-year extension for the PS3 will cost $49.99, while a two-year plan will cost $59.99. The PSP plan is $29.99 for one year, and $39.99 for two years. An "accidental damage" option is also being offered for $10 more. Ironically, Nash adds that "it's because of the reliability of the PS3 and PSP systems that we can offer the PlayStation Protection Plan." Additional details are available on Sony's official website.

Sony has a patent with a PS3 controller connected to a PSP

PSPgo lets users control PSP games with a PlayStation 3 controller. Nifty, but what if you have a regular PSP? Well, there’s this idea.

Sony Computer Entertainment America kicked around the idea of connecting a PSP directly to a standard PlayStation controller. A patent outlines two ideas. One uses a hinged PSP case locked on a regular controller. Another solution has users plug their PSP into a special controller. Ah, that brings back memories of good old video game cartridges. Both connected controllers give the PSP a second analog stick, a feature developers could utilize if this accessory ever gets released and sells like hotcakes.

Last week, VG247 carried a story about a premium, subscription-based version of Sony's PlayStation Network, which would be revealed at E3 2010. Today, Joystiq is running its own story with some new details.

Joystiq cites multiple sources and believes that Sony will unveil PSN+ at E3 2010 during its press conference. The service will "will focus on giving paid subscribers additional bonuses without limiting online multiplayer between paying and nonpaying users."

The additional bonuses cited are:

* "Access to a rotating list of PSP Minis and PSone Classics"

* "Exclusive in-game DLC"

* "Discounts to the PlayStation Store"

* "'First Hour' demo access to full retail titles"

* A PlayStation Protection Plan

* Cross-game chat

* Auto-patching for recently played games

Furthermore, it is said that a post-launch update would add cloud storage for save games. Joystiq's sources do not name a specific price, but one speculates that it could be as high as $9.99 a month.

The content of both rumors seem very different, but other than a discrepancy about cross-game chat, seem to fit together. The European-focused rumor from VG247 suggests a music-streaming service, while the US-based rumor focuses on the games.

The original PlayStation Portable continues its reign as Japan's bestselling platform, with the PlayStation 3 and Wii continuing their close battle for second place. How'd every other platform fare?

The Nintendo DS may not show as well in the weekly contest for install base, but combining all three variations puts Nintendo's handheld platform on top. Sitting at the very bottom was the poor PSPgo, selling less than it did last week when it dipped below the 1,000 mark for the first time.

For the console war tally, courtesy of sales tracker Media Create, check out this fabulous unordered list.

PS3 Games Go 3D On June 10

Having previously revealed a launch date of "June", Sony Japan got specific overnight and said that the PlayStation 3's 3D era will begin on June 10.

That'll be the day a number of downloadable titles for the Japanese PlayStation Network are updated to support 3D technology. Those games are Super Stardust, WipeOut and Pain, and while the first two will update free of charge, in a disconcerting precedent people who already own Pain will still have to pay ¥300 (USD$3.20) if they want to play in 3D.

A few things to note: you'll need a 3D TV to actually use this tech, so that'll instantly rule out over 99% of you. And June 10 won't necessarily bring about a new firmware update, as the groundwork for 3D games was laid last month.

Sony Surveys Interest In New HD PS2 Collections.

Nuotrauka

Sony is gauging the level of interest consumers have for more HD PS2 packs. Email surveys were recently sent out to purchasers of God of War III, providing them an opportunity to fill in the blanks and make known what PlayStation 2 titles or franchises they would like to see get an HD remake.

Noting that such games would be “upgraded with similar features to the God of War Collection,” the participant who submitted his survey to Kotaku made the obvious choices – Metal Gear, Ratchet & Clank, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, and more. Shadow of the Colossus & Ico were also called out, which falls in line with a report that broke last week indicating a cosmetic makeover for the two titles may already be in the works.

Sony is asking, so feel free to weigh in below. What games or franchises would you like to see revisited?

Paimta iš GameInformer

Taigi, pamatysim ir daugiau perdirbtų žaidimų, kaip God of War I ir II, kuriuos galesim lošti ant PS3 ir mėgautis HD kokybe.

Sony Working on PlayTV 2.

Nuotrauka

Back in 2008, PlayTV was released in PAL territories. It's now 2010, what's going on with it?

Mark Green, senior producer at Sony Cambridge Studio, has confirmed to website Spong that Sony is working on a second model of PlayTV. Sony is, says Green, "still working on PlayTV, PlayTV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts..."

PlayTV is a television set-top box and recorder for the PlayStation 3. It has yet to be released in North America.

PlayTV Unlocks Free Digital TV On PlayStation 3

Watch, record and replay TV shows on demand

Turn PS3 into a digital personal video recorder and record programmes to watch anytime, anywhere

Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the introduction of PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). PlayTV will be available in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early in 2008, with other PAL territories to follow in due course.

Designed to reinforce PS3's rightful place in the Living Room at the heart of the home entertainment needs, the twin channel TV tuner peripheral and PVR software turns PS3 into a state of the art TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. PlayTV will also record individual programmes or whole series1 to the PS3 hard drive for viewing later on the family TV, or for transferring to the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) for remote viewing outside of the home.

Operating on the widely available Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial (DVB-T) format, PlayTV uses an incredibly quick and easy to use 7-day Electronic Programme Guide EPG2. that provides the navigation for programming the PVR features of PlayTV.

In line with PlayStation's focus on advanced technology made easy, PlayTV provides a host of added value features seldom seen on anything but the highest cost standalone PVRs:

· PlayTV's two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3's already impressive High Definition credentials.

· Unlike the electronic programme guides found on conventional satellite and cable services, PlayTV's EPG is lightning fast, and simple to use with either PS3's SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control to really enhance viewing pleasure.

· Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a positive joy to use compared with the complexity of some standalone PVR models

· Seamless connectivity with PSP allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on PSP via a Wi-Fi connection (using Remote Play feature). Alternatively, quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.

· Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV. PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays, maximising the viewing experience.

· PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PLAYSTATION®Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.

"The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family," said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PLAYSTATION Network support. With the introduction of PlayTV's state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.
