Kotick's PS3 price 'threat' the "nature of business" says Sony boss

Posted: 09.07.2009 07:27 by Technet2k Comments: 2

Sony CEO Howard Stringer has commented that Activision's Bobby Kotick "likes to make a lot of noise," but it's all just corporate politics he dismisses.

He's "putting pressure" on Stringer, and likewise, he's returning the favour. It's just the "nature of business." A price cut would have Sony lose money on every PS3 - "how's that for logic?"

"He likes to make a lot of noise," Stringer said, attending the Allen & Co conference, reports Reuters. "He's putting pressure on me and I'm putting pressure on him. That's the nature of business."

Last month Kotick said: "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console," offering the most clear cut price snip request yet.

CEO Stringer was asked on the logic of not cutting the price of the PlayStation 3, to which he replied: "I (would) lose money on every PlayStation I make -- how's that for logic."

It's believed a price drop is coming later this year, which is also said to coincide with the launch of a slim line PS3 model - purportedly being manufactured in Taiwan after contracts surfaced.

PS3 Computing Breaks 260 Barrier, 112-bit Prime ECDLP Solved

Today SKFU ran across an interesting Swiss EPFL article (linked above) of a PlayStation 3 cluster of 200 units breaking an ECC-based system.

To quote, in part: We are pleased to announce that we set a new record for the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem (ECDLP) by solving it over a 112-bit finite field.

The previous record was for a 109-bit prime field and dates back from October 2002. Our calculation was done on a cluster of PlayStation 3 game consoles at the Laboratory for Cryptologic Algorithms at the EPFL.

The calculation was started on January 13, 2009, and finished on July 8, 2009. It ran on and off, occasionally interrupted by other cryptanalytic projects, on a cluster of more than 200 PlayStation 3 (PS3) game consoles.

PS3 Gets First Pay-To-Play Game

By Alex C [nofi], PR

We liked Trash Panic, but we didn’t know Sony liked it enough to give it another chance. On the Japanese PSN Store today the game, which is called Gomi Bako in its native country, has been re-released as a pay-to-play game: for ¥100 you get 3 lives, and unlike the ‘full’ PSN game, you can unlock Home Rewards.

100 Yen is roughly 69p, which gives you an idea of the cost. Whilst I’m all for new ideas, this one makes me feel a little uneasy – I’d rather pay more up front and keep the game free, and yes in this case that’s entirely possible but if Sony go down this route for other games in the future they’d be on groundbreaking territory.

Still, it’s probably more effective than a demo, especially with the Home Rewards. There are no Trophies for this version of the game.

Sony developing PSEye facial recognition software

Sony developing PSEye facial recognition software

Develop '09: PlayStation camera boasts new features

Some of the advantages boasted by Microsoft's Natal controller are already in the PSEye, Sony said today.

The firm has developed new facial recognition software for the PSEye camera which has been put together after many experiments by both the excellent SCEE R&D team and work with other developers.

"We've got a wealth of libraries available," explained head of developer services Kish Hirani.

He admitted that "it's a lot of fun in the office" and has been tested extensively.

The facial tech can see the position and direction of a player's head and can work out the

gender and age of the face, and detects different parts of the face including nose, mouth, eyes, eyebrows, shape of the mouth - and even glasses.

Sony motion controller is 'true interaction'

by Michael French |

Sony motion controller is 'true interaction'

Develop '09: Format-holder discusses new device at Develop Conference

Sony this morning offered developers attending its coding keynote at the Develop Conference in Brighton more details on its new motion controller.

The device, which was unveiled at E3, uses a wand-like peripheral with built-in accelerometers and a coloured ball at one end which is tracked by the PSEye camera.

"It can track true 3D, whereever I move it will fully track on every axis," explained SCEE developer services boss Kish Hirani.

In a demo of the archery game shown at E3, SCEE's Colin Hughes explained more:

"We're not getting any lag, which we had with the camera-based stuff on PS3 before. It is very quick and responsive."

The mix of camera tracking and hardware means that the device is 'aware' even when it isn't being seen by the camera.

"It tracks the controller based on acceleromoter - so you can use it really freely, even behind your back," said Hirani. "You have great accuracy."

He added: "There's a whole spectrum of things you can do with this controller.

"It picks up all the pitch and movement. It's precise and responsive - the sphere on [the front] is what the controleller is tracking - it uses the full RGB spectrum for the colours."

He added that using the PSEye makes it "a truly interactive device" given its mix of controller hardware, camera and directional microphone.

Developers waning to make a game for the motion controller need a PSPEye - and prototypes of the actual hardware is available from SCEE account managers, but are in limited quantities at the moment. Studios will have to get whitelisted by Sony and discuss their ideas with them before the prototypes become more freely available

And in terms of external middleware the device uses AiLive - which as Hirani pointed out "other devices using motion controllers use" (i.e. Wii - and it's free to all PS3 developers.

Sony: Our Triple-A Software Will Bring Consumers to PS3

IndustryGamers recently met with Scott Rohde, Vice President of Product Development at SCEA, to talk about the PS3 development strategy and the company's new motion-sensing controller unveiled at E3.

One thing that's often been cited in terms of developing for the PS3 platform is its level of difficulty, but as developers like Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games and Sucker Punch have demonstrated, it's all about how to really leverage those powerful SPUs in the PS3. Rohde thinks we're only "scratching the surface" of what the PS3 can really do.

"The way I like to look at what the PS3 can do is that we're still peeling back layers of the onion and finding even more that the SPUs can pull off. From first-hand experience, when you talk to developers and they realize – especially when talking about a sequel – that they can throw a lot of tasks at those SPUs, freeing up the main processor to do a lot more than they thought, that's exciting to developers. It's exciting for them when they see they've just scratched the surface of what PS3 can do," he said.

Sony Motion Control at Develop Conference 2009

By Robert W [bioEye], Senior Writer

I personally think a great name for Sony’s upcoming motion sensing control would be ‘PlayStation Motion’. The ‘wand’ just sounds lame. ‘Nintendo WiiMote’, ‘XBox 360 Natal’ and ‘PlayStation Motion’. Sony are the only ones so far who haven’t announced an official name for their motion tech. But enough of my thoughts. Sony elaborated on their development with their motion controls at todays ‘Develop 2009′ conference, with some interesting nuggets of info. Annoyingly, the event wasn’t allowed to be filmed because Sony stress that this is still “prototype hardware”, so all news comes from live blogs and photos. Let’s see what Sony have up their sleeves then shall we?

E3 Demo: The examples that we saw at E3 2009 were repeated. That includes lobbing arrows at skeletons in a precise manner. Two motion sticks/wands were needed, one for each hand. One hand holds the bow, while the other pulls on the arrow string. It uses the PlayStation Eye, so there’ll be no need to buy additional hardware. The PlayStation Eye currently costs around £25 / €29 on its own, which potentially means that it could come down in price before Microsoft’s Natal arrives. However, that’s just speculation. The prototype wands are currently extremely rare for developers to get their hands on, and require them to “make a case” about their need for their use before Sony issue them with some.

Facial Recognition: As we already covered today, it was announced that the current PlayStation Eye will be able to recognise many parts of the human face. It can tell the position and direction the head is facing, the age and gender of the face, and the emotion the user is expressing. So if you’re a smiling man, looking upwards, aged 87, it’ll know you’re creepy. It can look at the shapes of your mouth, eyes and nose. So while the Wii Fit can tell you that you’re fat, the PlayStation Eye will be able to tell you that you’re ugly. Imagine how this could potentially be used. While some games may react, such as Microsoft’s Milo, to your expressions, the fun could extend online. Imagine passing others online as they look angry when someone teabags them, or avatars running around PlayStation Home, fully animated via the player’s own body and face.

EyePet: The E3 trailer (already available for download from the PlayStation Store) was shown to act as an example. EyePet will use lots of motion tracking, such as your hands and body. We’ve all seen the image that you draw come to life in 3D, and Sony iterate that they’ve been working with motion technology since the PS2 and the EyeToy, so they’ve got a lot of experience.

Invizimal: Motion controls are coming to the PSP. A trailer is shown with a young girl attaching the ‘PSP Go!Cam’ (already available in shops for £35 / €40) and walking around outside. She follows a tracker, and an image of her appears on her PSP-3000, with monsters also embedded into the world around her. This is a Pokémon-style game, where you can catch the monsters in your local area and trade them with your friends, and fight them against each other. Of course, if you’re the Indiana Jones-type, you could get in your car and hunt down monsters in other regions, but seeing that this is aged at 8 – 10 year olds, if you’ve got a driving license this probably isn’t for you. Nevertheless, it’s interesting that Sony are also implementing motion controls into the PSP and PSPgo; something that the current generation of iPhone and iPod touch (PSPgo’s main competitor) can’t do so easily, as the camera is embedded on the back. The Go!Cam can be turned 180 degrees so it can either face you or your surroundings.

Tech-talk: After ‘Invizimal’ on the PSP, the Sony team start talking jargon, and mention how they’re utilising the hardware architecture of the PS3 and PSP. They cover VideoRAM and polygons, maintaining the frame-rate in games, and reducing GPU load. Amongst it all, we learn Sony can save 10% of the GPU with their awesome skills and that they have a horizontal hardware scaler only for 1080p resolution. This is all used in Killzone 2. Apparently, the PS3 GPU was nice when it came out, but there are nicer GPUs on the PC now. So they’re obviously spending time on finding ways to optimise the use of the PS3 hardware.

That’s it. The tech-talk took up most of the conference. Being a developer’s-based talk, that’s inevitable. If you wanted to hear all of the 70+ presentation slides read out, then VG247 will be posting the full audio capture of the event on their site soon. Check the source link for it later.

Persona 5 PS3 Exclusive?

Nuotrauka

What appears to be an accidental announcement from a pachinko industry publication holds that “a consumer announcement of PS3 exclusive Persona 5 is scheduled.”

The mention is slipped in with the industry announcement surrounding a Megami Tensei themed pachinko machine, so it seems unlikely to be an outright fabrication, though of course it could be genuinely mistaken, and it will almost certainly turn out to be “mistaken” and quietly excised.

The 2nd Most Popular Platform For Skype In Japan Is...

By Brian Ashcraft, 2:00 AM on Tue Jul 21 2009, 3,464 views (Edit, to draft, Top, Slurp)

Skype is a wonder. It's allows users to connect via the internet phone for free. The mass majority of people in Japan use the computer for Skype, sure. Let's see what numero two choice is.

Japan's RealWorld RealResearch polled slightly over one thousand of its members: 63.5 percent were male, 8.1 percent were teenagers, 17.5 percent in their twenties, 12.8 percent in their thirties, 28.8 percent in their forties, 19.5 percent in their fifties and 13.3 percent sixty-year-old and up.

Here's the gaming connection:

Q3: On what kinds of devices do you use Skype?

Computer: 97.2 percent

Sony Playstation Portable (PSP): 6.6 percent

Fixed-line telephone: 4.2 percent

Basic mobile phone (Nokia, etc): 2.8 percent

Skypephone (Skype-branded mobile phone): 1.9 percent

Smartphone (iPhone, Windows Mobile, etc): 1.4 percent

PDA, pocket PC: 0.0 percent

Other: 0.5 percent

Oh how we wonder what that Other 0.5 percent is. Oh yes.

3D Accelerated Graphics Are Coming to PS3 Linux

The new Mesa 7.5 has been released recently.

The interesting thing about it is that it is first release to contain Gallium3D architecture for "OS-independent and API-independent 3D drivers" which in turn contains drivers for various devices such as:

• softpipe - a software/reference driver

• i915 - Intel 915/945 driver

Cell - IBM/Sony/Toshiba Cell processor driver

• nouveau (for NVIDIA GPUs) and R300 for (AMD/ATI R300)

You can read about state of Cell driver here.

This in fact will bring accelerated 3D graphics to PS3 where the graphics processing won't be done by RSX but by employing SPUs. This would vastly enhance usability of Linux running on PS3 by providing one of the things it's lacking now...
