In what first appears to be a dry interview, closer inspection reveals an interesting tidbit from Yamauchi about the multiplayer functionality in Gran Turismo PSP. As we already know, up to four players can compete wirelessly via the PSP’s ad-hoc wireless mode. That’s cool, but there’s more to it than that - GT PSP will be one of the first games outside of Japan to take advantage of the little-known Ad-Hoc Party application.

First released in Japan late last year, Ad-Hoc Party is a free application downloaded to your PlayStation 3. Once running, your PSP connects wirelessly to your PS3, through which you can play games with your friends over the Internet. It’s an interesting, decentralized method of bringing online play to PSP titles without requiring game developers to implement the additional functionality or maintain server infrastructure. The implications of online play for GT PSP are huge, adding lots of depth and fun to a title that some hard-core players had dismissed.

Sony representatives have already confirmed that Ad-Hoc Party is coming to the United States, so keep an eye out for more information about the software in the coming weeks and months. For now, check out the Japanese video above for a visual explanation of how the Ad-Hoc Party application works.

na atrodo idomus dalykas tas Ad-Hoc Party, nebutina zaisti keliese tik susitikus, gali losti budamas bet kur, prisijunges per ps3,ir atrodo kad GT PSP bus dar idomiau losti, nes kartu su GT PSP pasirodymu ,pirma karta galesim ismeginti sita sistema uz japan ribu, reiskia turesim eng versija october 1

Concept

The purpose of this software is to extend the PlayStation Portable's adhoc game function using the PlayStation Network through the PlayStation 3's built-in wi-fi. Therefore it is not compatible with the non-wifi enabled PlayStation 3 20GB model (CECHB00). The PlayStation 3 must be connected to the Internet with a broadband network (wired) connection since the wireless connection is used as a server for the PlayStation Portable. Another constraint is the PlayStation Portable user must remain close to the PlayStation 3 so the PS3 to PSP wi-fi connection is still active during ad hoc playtime.

The PSP to PSP ad hoc connection is replaced by a PSP to PS3 ad hoc connection to allow online gaming on a global scale through the PlayStation Network enabled PlayStation 3. It allows advanced online multiplayer functions on the PlayStation Portable such as voice chat using the PlayStation 3 official bluetooth headset or the PlayStation Eye webcam's microphone. Text chat, known as "lobby chat", is also possible within public ("Free") rooms and private ("Password") rooms[3][4]. The PlayStation 3 official Wireless Keypad is also supported, however, users must press the Enter key to begin typing.

Beta version

Sony issued a press release on October 9, 2008, commenting on the Beta version's release on the Japanese PlayStation Store scheduled for October 30[5], however it was delayed until November 6[6]. The beta version was updated to version 1.02 on November 20, 2008 with 32 additional supported games[7]. Beta version 1.03 came out on November 29, 2008, it added features such as BGM selection (from the XMB)[8]. Version 1.06 added the following features: group voice chat, customizable lobby wallpaper (using any image from the PS3 hard drive) and the ability to create 8 person rooms. Version 1.07, now displays the current NAT type for the PS3 on the bottom left of the Title screen.

adhoc Party

The beta version's graphical user interface is based upon four features:

Start (スタート)

"Start" is the ad hoc Party portal allowing to select a server called "World" and a meeting area called "Lobby". Afer accepting the Terms of Use, the green dashboard interface is displayed. First, a World ("World A~J") has to be selected, each World is divided into 64 "Lobbies" ("lobby 01~64") hosting a maximum number of 32 users each. That makes a total number of 20,480 users connected simultaneously on the available 10 servers during the Japanese beta version.

Lobby traffic (i.e. the number of connected PlayStation 3) is illustrated by a coloured character icon. There are four colours, grey for empty Lobbies, blue for Lobbies hosting 1~15 users, orange for Lobbies hosting 16~26 users and red for Lobbies hosting 27~32 users. Once a certain Lobby is selected informations are provided about the number of hosted users (入場者数), Free Rooms (フリールーム), Password Rooms (パスワードルーム) or PSN "Friends" (フレンド). Full Lobbies hosting 32 users cannot be entered though, hence the "error 3002" message, then another Lobby can be selected. When a World's 64 Lobbies are all full, a different World has to be chosen.

Room interior with four connected avatars

When entering an available Lobby, the user's avatar appears on the dashboard, this avatar can be moved using the L3 analog stick. A dashboard location must be pointed out to create a "Room" or to simply move the avatar. It is possible to communicate with other avatars by activating the Voice Chat on the left option panel, or to type text messages using the Start button. Emotions can be communicated with the Avatar Actions (アバターアクション) by holding Square button and selecting one of the four available animations. Since Lobbies are dedicated to host chat rooms, each avatar has the ability to create his own which can be either public, either private. Such private rooms are password secured hence their "Password Room" name and key marked icon, as opposed to the "Free Room" and its open door icon.

Creating a Room is done by selecting a location on the green dashboard with Circle button, then using "Room Draw" (ROOMを作成する). In order to describe its purpose to users (launch a multiplayer game or just chat) it is possible to edit the created Room by adding a name, a short comment and a password to it. Once the Room is created the avatar enters it and a new window pops up. This new window contains a Room Chat Log for text messages, it displays the hosted avatars and also features the Sound Call (サウンドコール) which is a way to communicate using one of the four distinctive sounds (siren, applause, etc.). Each Room can host up to four avatars which is the maximum number of players supported by the PlayStation Portable's multiplayer ad hoc feature. Version 1.06 allows each room to host up to 8 avatars - selectable when creating the room.

Jump (ジャンプ)

"Jump" is made for selecting "Friend List" (フレンドリスト) or "Bookmark" (ブックマーク) which allows to directly join a connected PSN friend's Lobby, or to select a bookmarked Lobby. Lobbies can be bookmarked from the dashboard's right Option panel under the "World A - lobby 01" form.

ad hoc (アドホック)

"ad hoc" is used to connect the PlayStation 3 with an activated PlayStation Portable. The PlayStation 3 Network Settings must be set to Broadband Network (wired) and the PlayStation Portable's wireless LAN switch must be turned on. Also power supply through the AC sector instead of the battery is highly recommended to avoid power loss when hosting a game. When "ad hoc" feature is launched on the PlayStation 3, the supported PlayStation Portable software's ad hoc game mode must be launched to connect the two systems together through wi-fi. Once the ad hoc connection is successful, the activated PlayStation Portable's nickname is displayed on the TV screen with a confirmation message. Since version 1.06, you can also do a search in a specific world for any rooms that are currently hosting the game that you are playing.

Information page (情報ページ)

The "Information page" is the PlayStation 3 built-in web browser restricted online user manual for adhoc Party.

Supported titles (1.05)

At launch, the sole officially supported title for use with adhoc Party for PSP beta was, the console biggest million seller, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in both regular and budget releases[9]. On November 20, 2008 SCEJ released the update 1.02 which officially supported up to 33 titles, including older and latest software such as Phantasy Star Portable and Macross Ace Frontier[10]. On December 18, 2008 SCEJ released the update 1.04 bringing the number of games officially supported to over 100. On February 12, 2009 SCEJ released the update 1.05 bringing the number of games officially supported to over 196. On March 29, 2009 SCEJ released the update 1.06 bringing the number of games officially supported to over 223. On April 24, 2009 SCEJ released the update 1.07 bringing the number of games officially supported to over 226. Please note, that the list of supported games below has not been updated recently.

The ability to transform your local adhoc multiplayer games into an over-the-net experience via a PlayStation 3 is a significant step forward to integrate the PlayStation Network with the PlayStation Portable.

However Sony officially announced «This service does not support all the titles with adhoc mode. The application may not function properly depending on the game contents and or users’ network status»[11]. See below the full list of all officially supported Japanese titles, sorted by publisher.[12]:

The Smartest PlayStation Executive Quote I've Seen In A Long Time

Nuotrauka

  Citata

You can usually count on a PlayStation 3 to be a slick, dependable piece of hardware. PlayStation executives...less so. Some like to shoot their mouths off from time to time. But this quote from Kaz Hirai stopped me dead in my tracks.

  Citata

A console always needs a solid core of games that appeal to gamers...If you go mainstream too quickly and don't support the core gaming audience then you lack the pillar to support your platform. Without this pillar you end up with a fickle audience that might be big but will probably move on.

Why? Because I agree 100% with the man. It's been my biggest fear/concern for Nintendo for a while now that when the wind changes - and one day, it will - they'll be left without that "pillar", and fall flat on their faces.

People often make fun of Sony for going on and on about a "ten year lifespan" for the PS3, but the tale of the tortoise and the hare has been told and re-told for a reason.

Amazon's Deal of The Day? 80GB PS3

Sony nemazina ps3 kainu? ne beda,amazon sumazins patys !! :) :)

Nuotrauka

  Citata

So, Sony hasn't given us a price cut. Good thing Amazon is — even if it's only for today!

The "Deal of the Day" is an 80GB PLAYSTATION 3 marked down 13 percent to US$349.99. Deal of the day, indeed. If you're keen to get a PS3, you can buy this. If you don't want to, then don't. No one is making you do anything.

Joost launches PS3 video site

Nuotrauka

  Citata

Internet video service Joost has just launched a special PS3 version of its site, and we have to admit it's pretty slick. The interface is designed specifically for the PS3, using the D-Pad to quickly go through the streamlined interface. Holding down the X button will bring up a special on-screen menu that allows you to quickly switch between windowed and full-screen playback. It's all very intelligently designed and easy to use.

Joost follows the footsteps of YouTube, which also offers a special portal for use on PS3. However, we found Joost runs much more smoothly than YouTube, offering better video quality at a better framerate. Unlike YouTube, you'll see advertisements before your video, but the improved interface and quality make for a significantly better experience. To check it out, visit http://labs.joost.com/tv on your PS3 browser. Don't forget to hit SELECT if you want to add it to your PS3's bookmarks.

Sony Spills More PS3 Motion Controller Details To Devs

Nuotrauka

  Citata

Sony Computer Entertainment reached out to its development partners today, getting them up to speed on the new PlayStation Eye-powered motion controller tech it showcased at E3 2009. It also expanded upon the details provided at the show.

The PlayStation 3's second motion control push is slated to launch in Spring 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment reiterated to developers today, arriving with a "range of first-party and third-party content." SCE pitched the new controller as capable of functioning "with any games across all genres from casual to core."

On the technical side, SCE says that the PlayStation Eye accessory will come equipped with force feedback rumble. Sony boasts that the "face-tracking and head-tracking capability already in the PS3 SDK" will offer developers "powerful tools for new types of user interaction."

Sony says its new controller will also work in tandem with the Eye's built-in microphone array for voice input and voice recognition. Up to four of the new motion controllers can be tracked at once by the PlayStation Eye.

Adding the wand controller to games comes at a horsepower cost, Sony notes, writing that the "motion-tracking library has some SPU overhead and has an impact on memory as well, although these will be minimized."

The developer targeted communication also indicates that Sony is "currently looking into the possibility" of combining motion control wand and stock PS3 controller functions, offering the example of "the motion controller as a sword and use DualShock 3 as a shield."

Sony did not express a price, firm launch date or plans to bundle the PlayStation Eye motion control accessory.

Official PlayTV Update & Product Presentation Available

  Citata

PlayTV Producer Mark Bunting has detailed some updates today on the European PlayStation Blog, including a Product Presentation video.

To quote: For those of you who are new to PlayTV, here is a little bit of background for you: PlayTV is a combination of a USB tuner and software that you install on your PS3 to watch your favourite free-to-air TV channels and listen to your favourite radio stations.

PlayTV works with terrestrial signals, which basically means the stuff that you will pick up with an aerial and not a dish or cable, the signal needs to be digital as this is the new format.

When we first released PlayTV, we enabled Remote Play which allowed you to use PlayTV via a Wi-Fi point anywhere in the world. There are some good instructions on how to do this in the online manual.
