With Forza 3 Motorsport reviews out today, we felt it was only fair to give Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of its main competitor Gran Turismo 5, a chance to talk about his game and he didn’t hold back.

 

In an exclusive interview with NowGamer, the man from Polyphony Digital asserted that Gran Turismo 5 not only looks good but it looks ‘better than reality’.

 

“We consider reality under the best and most aesthetically pleasing conditions”

 

"'Better than reality' – yeah, that's one way of putting it. In a way, it's kind of a given that it's going to look better than reality. The thing about reality is that the criteria for looking "real" are actually a lot stricter and volatile than you'd expect. The way the sun shines, reflects off something, the way it lights scenery – we seldom have the opportunity to see what we consider "reality" under the best and most aesthetically pleasing conditions.”

 

He went on to say: “Every time we go out to the circuit and take photos of cars, we get that same impression again. When you see a race on television, compared to a race in a game, you realise that the reality isn't as shiny or pleasant as the game. However, these "best conditions" do indeed exist. They happen every once in a while. Maybe, once a year, you'll be watching a race on TV, or you'll be outside, and a cloud will move in an ideal direction, and the sun will shine down at a perfect angle, and maybe just for a moment you'll have this beautiful scene right in front of you.”

Gran Turismo 5 Packaging Reveals Three Discs

The most curious thing, of course, is the fact that the packaging clearly contains three separate Blu-Ray cases -- one black, one red, and one blue. What could they be? While the conspiracy theorists get to work, here’s a list of other interesting tidbits from the clip:

 

* Gran Turismo uses one single physics calculation model, so they simply enter the parameters for each car, and the handling characteristics play themselves out within the game. As Yamauchi says, “If the original car is made well, it’ll drive well.”

* We get a closer look at the 3D model of the SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5, along with a corner from the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

* Mercedes’ narrarator suggests that Yamauchi is “considering” putting the new SLS AMG on the cover, but Yamauchi’s following comments (along with the box art seen earlier) all but confirm it will be the star of the show. As he explains, it “will probably be the most exciting car in the world when GT5 is released”. He also was sure to mention: “Fans of Gran Turismo 5 really have something to be excited about”.

The "FT-86 Concept" is a concept car appearing in the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. It is an eagerly awaited compact FR planned for release in 2011, powered by a horizontally opposed engine developed in cooperation with Subaru.

 

Through collaboration with the Toyota Motor Corporation, "Gran Turismo" has already reproduced a ride in this brand new car. Feel the vibe from this new generation sports coupe!

The Toyota FT-86 concept is the fruit of cooperation between Toyota Motor Company and Subaru, and as such will wear a common chassis and some degree of engine commonality, at the least a 2.0 liter, four cylinder boxer engine dubbed the "C-45 Boxer" and making between 200 and 250 HP will power the rear wheels through a manual six speed transmission, and get this — no hybrid system. Saints be praised.

 

Perhaps most telling are the car's overall dimensions. At 163.7 inches long, 69.3 inches, a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, and 49.6 inches high, it's thankfully compact, smaller in length, width and height than the Nissan 370Z, and slightly longer in wheelbase. It's also the first car to wear Toyota's new swoopy styling with some gusto. Dare we say it, we actually like the look of it. It's... exciting, we're so confused here. The interior is obviously all show-car glam and may serve as direction, but we'll be shocked if there are many zippers on the production car's dash.

After the Tokyo Game Show, many in our forums speculated that we’d see Gran Turismo 5’s next appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it turned out they were correct! Unfortunately, though, the only thing new is the Toyota FT-86, which is now playable in the demo alongside the Mercedes SLS-AMG and Ferrari 458 Italia. The show is just getting started, so the only impressions we have so far are via Japanese sites Gigazine and Inside-Games. One interesting thing to note: Sony will gift you 100 free cars in Gran Turismo PSP if you bring your copy of the game to the booth.

Gran Turismo 5 Track Editor Confirmed By Polyphony Digital

With the recent rumors and videos that have been going around about Gran Turismo 5 having a track editor, we decided to contact the developers to find out if it was true or not. Now, we have a official answer.

 

They were kind enough to give us a quick response and this is what a representative said:(Take note, translated from Japanese.)

 

“Yes it will have a track editor. You will be able to rebuild a track from scratch or edit the tracks that are already put in Gran Turismo 5.”

 

We also asked them when Gran Turismo 5 would be launched world wide. A representative replied with:(Take note, translated from Japanese.)

 

“Sorry, we can’t give out any of that information at the moment. You will just have to wait and see.”

 

Looks like Gran Turismo 5 will live up to its name, “The Real Driving Simulator”.
