Today in Tokyo, Japanese game company Konami held a press conference for upcoming PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. (Check out Kotaku Japan's coverage here.) And like the same press conference Konami held for Metal Gear Solid 4 when it was released, the company announced corporate collaborations — i.e., products that would appear in the game. But, unlike the Metal Gear Solid 4 press conference, it was short on big announcements. (At the MGS4 press conference, gameplay was publicly shown for the first time on an enormous movie screen via digital projector. It was incredibly impressive.)

 

Well, the lack of news at the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker press conference is not entirely true. It was revealed that it was possible to capture vehicles in boss battles and that players could make contraptions out of parts and then trade those parts with Front Mission players. All of that is definitely interesting to fans of the series. Other news? The leaked MGS tie-up with Monster Hunter is news. But it is also a tie-up. The entire press conference seemed to be one excessive tie-up another another.

Konami today announced a second limited edition PSP Bundle for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – slightly better than the first but for the same price. This is the first limited edition PSP bundle in two years for what is possibly the most important game for the PSP right now.

 

Wherever gamers get a bundle for Peace Walker, for $200 they'll get a limited edition green PSP with the game, a voucher to download in-game content as well as an as-of-yet-unnamed movie from the PlayStation Store, and a memory stick.

 

The bundle announced last month for general retailers comes with a "spirited" green PSP and a 2GB memory stick. This new "Big Boss Pack" is a GameStop exclusive, comes with a camouflage green PSP, a 4GB memory stick, and a carrying case.

These bundles indicate somewhat of a backpedaling from Sony's all-digital plan with the PSPGo. Both bundles come with the PSP-3000 and the UMD version of the game, and they both cost less than a standalone PSPGo.

The total running time for the linear elements (e.g. cut scenes) in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is 162 minutes and 34 seconds, according to the British Board of Film Classification. By comparison, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence contains 216 minutes and 34 seconds while the ones in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots added up to an astonishing 545 minutes and 47 seconds.

 

The PSP exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be released in North America on June 8th.

Something's Missing from the Japanese Version of Peace Walker

Hideo Kojima had to cut a "certain scene" from the game, and he doesn't like it!

Hideo Kojima's latest posts at his extremely frequently updated Twitter are about how Peace Walker has been rated throughout the world.

 

Kojima posted yesterday night that Peace Walker has been given a T rating in America. This would correspond to 13 years in Japan and 15 years in Europe. In Japan, however, the game's rating is actually C, or 15 years.

 

To keep the Japanese rating from a D, it seems Kojima Productions had to remove something from the game. Wrote Kojima, the PSP is supported by younger people, and so during Peace Walker's production the staff made the effort to avoid grotesque scenes. However, there's "a certain scene," a "standard element that's "absolutely necessary for MGS," that apparently could not make it under the C rating. They had to remove this scene from the Japanese version of the game.

 

The European and North American versions of the game are the original version without the adjustments made for the Japanese version. Kojima suggests that people try to compare the versions if they get the chance. Although for those who will be playing the Japanese version, he assures that it's just fine -- the game's feel hasn't changed.

 

Kojima seems to be concerned about the need to remove the content for the rating. "There's tolerance for fantasy games, but for games where you show war or real violence between people, you apparently can't complain about anything. With this, it seems impossible to communicate something through games."
