While Final Fantasy XIV works splendidly with a wired Microsoft controller, it does not exactly scream "Final Fantasy." One can hear this official Final Fantasy XIV controller from Sunflex screaming from a mile away.

 

First unveiled at GamesCom last month the official Final Fantasy XIV controller has more of a PlayStation aesthetic to it. It combines the technical quality of ZeroG's officially licensed PlayStation 2 controller with the range of the PlayStation 3 controllers from Sunflex's snakebyte brand into one logo-emblazoned piece of game controlling technology.

 

It is startlingly white. I would not recommend eating Cheetohs while playing. I might suggest wearing gloves.

 

The official Final Fantasy XIV PC controller is the first product to arise from a licensing agreement between Sunflex and Square Enix.

 

The controller itself should be available when the game launches on September 30.

Square Enix Polls Players On FFXIV Updates, 'Drastic' Changes

 

Weeks after restructuring its Final Fantasy XIV development team and delaying the MMORPG's PS3 release, Square Enix sent an email to subscribers promising a new direction and polling them about possible changes.

 

Launched for Windows PCs in September 2010, the PC edition of FFXIV received much criticism from reviewers and players over a lack of content, features, and polish. Square Enix responded by extending free trial periods, replacing producer Hiromichi Tanaka and director Nobuaki Komoto, and introducing new "handpicked" leaders to the MMO's existing team.

 

"The last few weeks of 2010 were tumultuous times for us all, what with the announcement of the development team restructuring and multiple version updates," said Naoki Yoshida -- Komoto and Tanaka's replacement, and a previously inconspicuous figure at the company -- in the email distributed to FFXIV players last weekend.

 

He added, "As part of the new direction promised, we here on the development and management teams have adopted four new keywords for FFXIV: fun, live, reboot, and rebuild. Forgive our translators if these buzzwords seem a bit cryptic or cliche, but I am using these English words as-is in the Japanese, and insisted they use the same words for a global resonance."

 

The email solicited subscribers to fill out a short questionnaire about changes they want to see in FFXIV, asking them to identify their biggest expectations from the restructured team ("an overhaul to fundamental gameplay aspects", "an accelerated version update schedule", or "increased communication with the players").

 

Square Enix's survey also players asked what issues they want addressed first, what in-game content and features they want added first, what site content (e.g. forums, in-depth play guides) they want implemented first, and whether they would welcome changes that would "drastically alter the rules already set" in FFXIV.

FFXIV free-to-play until 'plan for improvement' is set - Square

Final Fantasy XIX Online landed on PC in September last year with a 30-day free trial in place, but Square is yet to claim a penny from players over six months later, and says it won't do until firm plans for improvements are in place.

 

The game suffered a turbulent launch receiving mass criticism from reviews and players alike. The game's original producer, Hiromichi Tanaka, put the game's shortcomings in part down to his "inexperienced" team shortly before Square replaced him with the current producer Naoki Yoshida.

 

Speaking with Gamasutra, Yoshida said Square will not ask players to pay for the game until improvement plans are set in stone. "It was pretty much personally because I've been a player for so long. I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something" when a firm plan for improvements had been established, he said.

 

Yoshida explained that Square offering the game for free at its own expense is a statement of intent. "The reason we're doing this is we're showing the players, yes, it's still costing us a lot of money, and we're not getting that money back yet, but we're serious about making these changes. This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously."

 

Expensive though this campaign may be, Yoshida insists Square is in a position to pull it off: "It's because Square Enix is funding this project 100 percent. That's why we can do this. Only Square Enix can do something like this."

Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Version Coming “At All Costs”.

 

A new Q&A session with the Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida ha been published by the game’s community team, shedding light on many aspects of the future of Square Enix’ MMORPG.

 

Many argued that the PS3 version of the game is destined to be canceled due to the game’s rocky launch, but they seem to be wrong, as in the french version of the interview Yoshida makes a quite clear statement:

 

It’s not canceled. Development is underway, don’t worry! The PS3 version will be released at all costs.”

 

Both the english and french interviews include some very intresting details, hidden between personal questions on the working life of Yoshida and the development team. Here are a few:

 

-An extensive revision of the game’s maps is confirmed. Yoshida would like to create many iconic places and compliment them with lots of content.

 

-The ability to jump will be implemented (much to my dismay), and will be similar in implementation to what other MMORPGs have.

 

-Planning and plot details are being organized for patch 1.19.

 

-Private player housing will be implemented together with the map redesign.

 

-Airships and Chocobos will be implemented with patch 1.19. More details about them will be revealed in August.

 

-PvP is still planned.

 

If you thought the guys at Team Bondi had it hard when working on LA Noire, Yoshida is no slacker himself. Final Fantasy XIV‘s cheerful producer walks into the office at 10 AM, attends development meetings until 9 PM, and leaves the premises at around 2-3 AM, after responding to an average of 230 emails. Since taking this job he routinely soldiers on by sleeping between two and three and a half hours a day.

 

Talk about dedication. After all he’s always been a dedicated MMORPG player (his favorite being Dark Age of Camelot, wonderful taste there), that’s good training for going on without much sleep.

Final Fantasy XIV PS3 details

The PlayStation Blog sat down with Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida at E3 2012 last week. Yoshida dished out new details about the PlayStation 3 version of the game, including plans for a public beta. Square Enix will also be showing the PS3 edition sometime this summer.

Square Enix, the publishers of Square Enix interactive entertainment products in the Americas, announced today the fully-redesigned, massively multiplayer online adventure Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Previously referenced as “version 2.0,” this title has been rebuilt from the ground up, and centers on the core concept of rebirth, featuring a new world to explore and storyline to experience.

 

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn offers visually-stunning graphics and game design that appeal to both Windows PC and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system players.

 

“Since announcing our plans for the future of the title last October, we have been working tirelessly to include all of the elements that we have promised in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This new title not only becomes a symbol of a completely new Final Fantasy XIV, but also marks the beginning of a new stage as the latest title in the Final Fantasy series. Goobbue Mounts - As previously announced, the goobbue horn, which is the item used to summon the Goobbue aMount, will no longer be obtainable as of the release of patch 1.23a.

Guild Marks – All of guild marks will be deleted upon logging into A Realm Reborn. For this reason, visit the guilds and use your marks before that time. After release, it will also no longer be possible to receive guild mark refunds for previously purchased abilities that have since been removed from the game.

Replayable Cutscenes - Content of nearly all cinematic cutscenes will be reworked. This will result in significantly different viewing experiences for the same cutscene between the current version of the game and A Realm Reborn.

Character Histories – The date on which an achievement as completed will be recorded as part of an in-game character history, which will be maintained in a manner different from current character histories on the Lodestone.Ways to have the current character histories remain accessible on the Lodestone following release are being looked into.

Achievements – A bevvy of achievements earned in battle, quests, seasonal events, dungeons and exploration will become unavailable upon release.
