Kinect Not Just For Xbox?

Microsoft is hoping that Kinect will be a big success for the Xbox 360, but creative director Kudo Tsunoda sees that as only the beginning for the motion-tracking camera.

Tsunoda recently told CVG that Kinect's technology could have larger applications than just the Xbox 360. "We take stuff from movies, or take technology from PCs and put it into games, and Kinect really is the first time that the video game industry is pioneering something that I really think has widespread application outside of just video games."

Tsunoda stated that PC compatibility is a "possibility" for Kinect's future, and that it may even be used with mobile phones one day. For now, however, Tsunoda was quick to point out that Microsoft's focus for Kinect is solely on the Xbox 360. Is this simple PR hype or a sign of things to come? We'll have to wait to find out.

Voice Control Confirmed for Kinect Launch

UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed that voice control will indeed be a part of the Kinect launch, nixing earlier reports that it was being cut. "Voice control is an exciting part of the Kinect for Xbox 360 controller-free experience and we can confirm that it will be available at launch in November 2010," said a statement issued to IGN this afternoon.

"Only on Xbox 360 will you be able to navigate the Kinect Hub using your voice to control your movies, TV shows and music. We do not have additional details to share about local voice availability at this time."

ORIGINAL STORY: File this one under rumour but Kinect may well not be getting voice control from day one, with Microsoft seemingly revealing that the feature will be patched in post-launch.

"We will be announcing when voice control will be turned on in due course," EMEA Xbox LIVE marketing manager Robin Burrowes told MCV, who have taken the quote to mean that voice control won't be available come Kinect's release this November. It appears that this may not be the only feature to be nixed for the launch of Microsoft's motion controller, with chat software Video Kinect also reportedly not featuring at release.

Kinect's voice control formed a key part of Microsoft's E3 presentation, with the Xbox 360's video player being controlled through a simple series of spoken commands.

While it seems likely that the Video Kinect feature will miss launch, it's uncertain whether voice control as a feature will also be absent. Kinectimals, a launch title for Kinect, makes strong use of voice control and Microsoft claimed there were inaccuracies in the MCV report when contacted by IGN, and we currently await an official statement.

We'll be sure to update as soon as the statement comes in.

Standing Up for Kinect

Kudo speaks about why Microsoft's motion controller matters.

Tekstas po offtopic'u

Ne į temą

Milo might have been the original poster boy, but in his prolonged absence it's Kudo Tsunoda that has become the public face of Kinect. Having shown us what the motion controller is capable of at E3 2009 – as well as showing us some of its more inspired failings – Kudo's been an energetic figurehead for the sensor ever since. Well over a year on and he's showing little sign of fading, displaying an unnerving amount of energy in the face of what's fast becoming a wave of cynicism from the traditional gaming press. Those ever-present shades may give the impression that he's suffering an eternal hangover, but Kudo is enthusiastic and engaging, and he puts up a good case for why it's worth standing in line come November for Kinect.

IGN: We're coming very close to launch right now – how do you the think reception has been for Kinect?

Kudo Tsunoda: The good thing about Kinect is the experiences are super-fun to play; It's one thing to see it on a video, and it's another thing when you actually get to play it. I read an article at E3 this year – they saw the keynote and weren't really sure if the games were for them, asking why aren't there more score-based games and things like that. And then they actually came to the show floor and played the games there – and they were like 'holy cow', it was super-fun and it's really skill-based game play and there's a lot of depth to the game play. Anybody who plays it we've been getting really good reactions from.

It's always a weird thing to me – people throw around the term core gamer, but everyone has a different definition of what core gaming is, and it's weird now that somehow core gamers are now defined as people who only like shooting people or chopping people in half. Really for me – and I've played games my whole life - people really like games that have a great game play progression, the longer you play it the better you are at it. We always talk about Kinect games being accessible, meaning you can get in and play straight away without having to learn a weird control scheme, but they really are – the launch experiences – the more you play them the better you get at them, they're very deep games and a lot of them have twenty to twenty five hours game play. That's the stuff that core gamers love, and when people play the game they really see that shine through.

IGN: Some of the press comments – and the community's comments – have been less than positive though.

Kudo Tsunoda: I try not to get too bent out of shape about it, and I totally understand. The only thing I say to anybody is just get in and try this stuff, and whatever opinion you've got once you've tried it, that's all good. Just sitting from afar and not even trying it, and then having a bunch of commentary about it – it's just a little bit weird.

It's funny – I was talking to someone today about that game Angry Birds. That is a game that people, whether you're a core gamer or not a core gamer, people really love. For some reason, if I told you we had a game like Angry Birds on Kinect in which you knock down little pig houses and stuff people would say that's not a core game.

IGN: Which reminds us – the games for Kinect's launch are all from first party outfits or bigger publishers. When can we see some smaller, indie titles taking advantage of Kinect?

Kudo Tsunoda: Xbox in general does this super-good job of supporting the smaller development community and the indie community – I think that's something you've seen throughout the history of the console. I think that while we're talking a lot about the Kinect launch titles, we'll be announcing soon about how it will work with Xbox Live Arcade and indie developers.

IGN: Back to some of the negative perceptions around Kinect - quite a lot of this stems from the pricing.

Kudo Tsunoda: To me, it's not just a peripheral, it's a part of our platform. The great thing about the Kinect sensor – it's just the Kinect sensor and that's it. You don't have to buy a whole bunch of other controllers to play multiplayer games, or buy a steering wheel or buy another peripheral for every game that comes out. I think when you're adding up how much you have to spend on any console for controls and peripherals versus just one sensor that does everything, really that's great value. For people who own an Xbox 360 already, they don't even have to buy a new console.

IGN: Why is it so expensive?

Kudo Tsunoda: I wouldn't say it's so expensive! Obviously we've done a lot of research with consumers to see what they think the value of the experience is, the technology and the sensor and all the experiences you can get on Xbox Live – the interaction with your movies, your TV your music and everything like that. I think it's a really good price.

IGN: A lot of time and money has clearly gone into Kinect – is there a lot riding on this?

Kudo Tsunoda: I think any time you're putting out some commercial programme obviously everything relies on the commercial success, no matter what. If you make something that people don't want to buy then it's not a success. I just think, again, we're getting a really good reaction from people and I'm not worried whether it's going to be successful or not. It's getting an awesome reaction all over the world and we're really looking forward to launch day and seeing all the people getting the sensors in their houses.

IGN: Do you think that Kinect has its killer app yet?

Kudo Tsunoda: We've got fifteen titles for launch, and the good thing about them is there are different games for lots of different people. Kinect Adventures does a great job as a packaged title, providing different comic adventures that appeal to different people, that game is also very social and very co-operative in its nature. I think Kinect Sports is obviously a lot more head-to-head multiplayer, so it's a totally different type of person for that. Kinectimals, again, has little tiger cubs and lion cubs, and that's for a totally different audience that would play Sports or Adventures. Then you've got Dance Central, a very different market and Kinect Joy Ride is also very different. It's good that we've got lots of different experiences that target different types of people.

IGN: What game play developments are you looking forward to seeing Kinect usher in over the next few years?

Nuotrauka

Kudo Tsunoda: I think a couple of the areas that I'm looking forward to seeing is building a much more sophisticated and complex model for character interaction. I think it's cool – you see some of this in Kinectimals, where we combine the physical gesture technology with the voice technology and the recognition system to have a cool relationship with your animal.

The animal can pick up not just words you're saying, but how you're expressing yourself with your body and with the tone of your voice. Plus, with the recognition system; it's like if you have a pet in your house, if I was playing with my dog all the time the dog's going to react differently to me if you come around. We're building up a set of shared memories and shared experiences within the game.

Sophisticated relationship development really only happens between living creatures right now, but now with Kinect technology we're able to build these kind of experiences.

Plus, I'm super excited about experiences where playing video games can help you in real life. Like Kinect Sports can teach you how to play sports, Dance Central – I used to be such a crap dancer, my wife used to hate how I danced but now I've got some moves I can use without humiliating her. I think it's super-cool that you can play games that help in your regular life as well.

IGN: Kinect obviously has some fascinating implications beyond games. When can we see it implemented in Windows, for example?

Kudo Tsunoda: One of the things that I really like about Kinect is that, as a videogame industry person we steal a lot of stuff from other industries, we take stuff from movies or we steal technology to put into our consoles, but really I think that this is one of the first times that the videogame industry is pioneering something that I think will have widespread use in many other industries and for many other devices. I'm focused on Kinect and Xbox at the moment, but there's potential down the road for incorporating it into other devices, for sure.

Nuotrauka

IGN: And how integral will it be to the next generation of Xbox?

Kudo Tsunoda: Obviously we're not talking about our next generation of consoles just now, but just like anything Kinect over time will evolve as a platform. It's like when you saw Xbox Live debut, and that's been continued on through everything you see on the console. Really the Xbox Live experience is so much different today from what it was in the beginning. I think you'll see that same kind of thing with Kinect, where over time more features get added to the platform, new experiences get added and you'll see that continue through the life cycle of Xbox as a whole.

IGN: Obviously Sony's got a little motion controller of its own coming out soon; any thoughts on that?

Kudo Tsunoda: I like playing all different kinds of games, so anything that's out there – I'm a gamer and I like to see what's going on. Everybody talks about Kinect as a motion controller like Sony Move or the Wii, but really the technology's very different, but also we do things like incorporating voice and the human recognition stuff that really is a lot different not only to what you see on other consoles but what you really see in any medium in the world right now. It's totally unique.

I don't really comment on other people's technology – I'm just really happy that the stuff that we're bringing to Xbox is totally different from anything you're seeing anywhere else.

Kinect voice control not available in some countries until Spring 2011

>> From eurogamer.net:

Microsoft has told Eurogamer Spain that Kinect voice recognition will be disabled for mainland Europe until spring 2011.

The company confirmed rumours that the voice-recognition software will only accept American English, British English, Japanese and Mexican Spanish at launch this November. Even Canadians will have to wait until spring 2011 to be able to control the system via voice.
