Entire Uncharted source code available to Sony's first parties

Naughty Dog's co-president has revealed that the company is not only happy to work with other developers, but that the entire source code for their first PS3 game is available to all of Sony's first-party developers.

 

In a live PlayStation Blog interview, Naughty Dog's co-president Evan Wells has revealed that they've decided to share almost everything they can in their development of their PlayStation 3 engine.

 

"We're very fortunate to have a great group of first party developers within Sony that we're able to collaborate with. We're frequently exchanging technical ideas and even share some code from time to time," Wells writes.

 

"We've even posted the entire source code of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to Sony's internal severs so that any first party developer can look through it, or borrow from it...and we plan on doing the same thing when Uncharted 2 ships."

 

But what if you're not a first-party (owned by Sony Computer Entertainment) PS3 developer? Wells highlights that Sony's ICE team is located internally at Naughty Dog: the ICE team has been writing optimised PS3 code for the past five years, with their work being shared with all PS3 developers in the form of the EDGE libraries.

 

Many agree that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is one of the most graphically impressive games on the PS3, with it being wildly believed that its sequel, Among Thieves, could top all console games entirely.

 

So what are developers being given access to? According to Wells, Uncharted 2 includes the following techniques:

 

"Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, deferred rendering, cloud computing, parallax mapping, high dynamic range tone-mapping, per object motion blur, cascade shadows, sub surface scattering simulation..."

 

Exciting stuff and we hope that other developers really take note of Naughty Dog's work.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves doesn’t even have a release date yet, but according to Evan Wells, Co-President of Naughty Dog, it can already be played in full – all that is missing is difficulty tuning.

Wells recently twitted:

“We’re doing a playtest of the entire game of Uncharted 2 this weekend to begin our difficulty tuning. It’s a very delicate process.”

Sony confirming to us today that the Naughty Dog developed PlayStation 3 game will arrive in the U.S. on October 13th. Start planning your sick days/pre-orders accordingly.

Oh, and speaking of pre-orders, Sony laid out its retailer plans for a quartet of downloadable exclusives with Amazon.com, GameStop, Game Crazy and BestBuy. Golden guns, right after this.

Yes, those are the golden Barettas that Drake can wield in multiplayer, adding a bit of flash to your online death match and "Plunder" competition. They're exclusive to BestBuy, meaning that if you're into sporting golden AK-47s, that should be your pre-order retailer of choice.

Other retailers are getting downloadable exclusive bonuses too, should your preference for weapons be a little more understated.

The exclusive UNCHARTED 2 Treasure Map allows players to discover hidden treasures throughout the game.

The UNCHARTED 2 Currency Multiplier allows gamers to gain in-game currency and unlock bonuses faster than their opponents for a limited period.

* GameStop - Exclusive first access to the Multiplayer Demo and the downloadable Revenge Attribute

The Revenge Attribute is one of the last boosters that you can unlock in the multiplayer campaign. This bonus allows you to unlock the "Revenge" booster right from the start of your multiplayer campaign.

 

That GameStop exclusive access to the multiplayer demo will run from September 9th to September 29th, giving folks who pre-order at that location a two week head start on the demo. It will open to the public on September 30th and wrap-up on Uncharted 2's release day.

 

Also, if you really like to plan ahead, these downloads will be available to those who pre-order until December 31, 2009. So don't sit on that downloadable gold assault rifle, kids. Grab it day one, if you can.

ESC-Toys will be releasing a line of four figures, all of Nathan Drake, all being weird, deformed vinyl sculpts. While none of them have names, it appears there's Drake, Hellboy Drake, Berlin Nightclub Drake and Radioactive Drake.

Only 2500 will be made, and they should be available sometime this Fall.
